During Wednesday evening's Township Trustees meeting, board members approved a motion to begin Phase 1 of the project, which will start the paving and site improvements aimed at expanding parking and enhancing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility. The upgrades are central to the Township’s plan to relocate its polling place to the Township Building in time for next year’s election, moving it from its current location at the American Legion.

Township Trustee Aaron Sundell pushed to approve beginning Phase 1 right away, noting the asphalt vendor's schedule fills fast. "We want to get on the schedule now, and not wait," Sundell said.

Originally, the board intended to complete the project in one go. A TIF funding request was submitted to the Delavan City Council to cover half of the project so the full scope of the work could be done, but the council took no action, leaving the township without the additional funds needed for a comprehensive rollout.

In response, the Township Board opted for a two-phase plan. Phase 1 will proceed with essential groundwork and paving of only a portion of the parking lot. Phase 2, which includes paving the remaining parking area along with the 4th Street entrance to the lot, will be deferred pending future funding opportunities.

Construction on Phase 1 is expected to begin later this year.

After years of vacancy, the former Uselton Oil Company (USCO) gas station at 201 E 4th Street in Delavan is set to reopen as a convenience store under the name Delavan Mart. The new establishment, owned by Navpreet Singh, plans to offer a variety of goods and services, including coffee, fountain drinks, snacks, candy, soft drinks, wine, beer, liquor, a kitchen, and a gaming room for video gambling.

The building, which has stood empty for an extended period, is undergoing renovations to accommodate its new purpose. While the convenience store will provide a range of refreshments and entertainment options, one lingering question remains: Will the gas pumps be reopened or removed?

According to plans submitted to the city, there are currently no intentions to reopen the gas pumps. However, no plans have been submitted to remove them either. Additionally, all four underground storage tanks at the site have been condemned by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Division of Petroleum & Chemical Safety. Singh has not publicly disclosed his plans for the fueling infrastructure, and he did not respond to requests for an interview.

Delavan High School mathematics instructor Nathan Brooks is championing a new recreational opportunity for the city—one he says would bring the community together while utilizing existing green space. Brooks presented a proposal to the Delavan City Council this week, advocating for the construction of an 18-hole disc golf course at Lake Park.

The project, estimated to cost around $5,000, has garnered significant local support. Brooks, working alongside local businesses, collected 79 signatures on a petition endorsing the initiative.

“[Disc golf] is really popular because the cost to play is really cheap. One disc is usually if it's used, is about like $8,” Brooks said. 

Disc golf, a sport similar to traditional golf but played with specialized flying discs, has seen a surge in popularity across the country. Brooks believes Lake Park’s layout makes it an ideal location for a course, offering both accessibility and natural beauty, as well as being the only 18-hole disc golf course between Pekin and Springfield.

Brooks first presented the idea to the council in February of 2023, but revisited the proposal now due to the availability of inexpensive baskets and free concrete pads for the tee areas, making the project more financially viable

City council members seemed receptive to the idea and have added the proposal to the agenda for their next meeting, where a formal vote will take place. Ward 1 Alderman Joshua Lusher noted the strong support the project has already received.

“I've got a lot of phone calls on it already,” Lusher said during the discussion.

During the meeting, Ward 3 Alderman Linda Slabaugh raised an important question about accessibility, asking whether the course would be usable by all residents, including those with disabilities. Brooks responded that as long as individuals can navigate on grass, they would be able to play on the course.

Mayor Adam White encouraged Brooks to continue gathering support for the initiative. He requested that Brooks work on raising private funds to help offset costs and continue collecting petition signatures. White asked that Brooks return to the council with a more precise funding request and an updated number of supporters for consideration at the next meeting.

The unexpected excavation left him unable to move his vehicles, effectively trapping him at home.

“The lack of notice is unacceptable,” Seaton said. “Not only was I unable to use my driveway, but there was no warning, no notice.”

Interim City Administrator Eric Diekhoff acknowledged both concerns and stated that the city has made no plans on mosquito abatement and will investigate the contractor’s practices to ensure better communication and accountability in ongoing infrastructure projects.

Inspectors cited multiple violations under Title 4, Chapter 2 & 10 of the City Code, identifying the building as unsafe, a public nuisance, and unfit for occupancy.

Under Sections 4-10-8 through 4-10-12, City officials possess the authority to placard and vacate the premises, order necessary repairs or demolition, and place liens for abatement costs if corrective actions are not taken. The property will remain off-limits to occupancy until a certified inspection verifies compliance with safety and sanitation requirements.

A formal notice will be issued to the owner, mandating the correction of all violations by licensed professionals. If compliance is not achieved within the allotted timeframe, the City may proceed with legal enforcement or demolition orders.

Delavan Township welcomed Aaron Sundell as its newest Township Trustee following an official swearing-in ceremony that marked the beginning of a new chapter in local governance. Sundell joins a dedicated team of public officials, including Supervisor Richard Bottenberg, Highway Commissioner Eric Diekhoff, and Trustees JoAnn Beymer, Richard Hartzler, and Kevin Kendregan, all of whom took their oaths alongside Sundell under the administration of Town Clerk Brad Donley.

The ceremony, held at the township offices, reflected the community’s commitment to effective leadership and civic engagement. As Sundell steps into his role, he brings fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to the board, aiming to contribute to initiatives that enhance the quality of life for Delavan Township residents.

As the newly sworn-in officials take on their responsibilities, residents are encouraged to engage with local government and participate in township affairs. With a strong leadership team in place, Delavan Township looks ahead to a future shaped by dedicated service and community-oriented initiatives.

In a cozy room filled with laughter and yarn, a dedicated group of knitters gathers twice a month to craft warmth for those in need. Known as the Cro-Knits, these compassionate individuals meet on the first and third Wednesday morning of each month, their hands busy with looms and needles, weaving more than just garments—they weave hope and kindness.

For over 15 years, the Cro-Knits have knitted over twelve thousand hats, lap robes, and scarves, distributing them to homeless shelters, nursing homes, and anyone in need of warmth. Their generosity has extended far beyond Delavan, with handmade gifts reaching recipients across the country.

The group started as an initiative to teach knitting and crocheting, but quickly grew into a community-driven effort, attracting individuals from all walks of life—teenagers discovering a new skill, seasoned knitters refining their craft, and octogenarians eager to lend their expertise. Each meeting welcomes around ten members, all united by their desire to make a difference.

New members are always encouraged to join, regardless of experience. Donations of yarn are also welcome and can be dropped off at any Cro-Knits meeting.

Those interested in participating can find the Cro-Knits at the Delavan Historical Society office at 319 S. Locust St., where they meet between 10:00 AM and Noon. Whether through knitting, donating, or simply lending support, the community is invited to be part of this heartwarming mission—one stitch at a time.

The Delavan Fall Festival Committee continued its tradition of supporting local students by awarding two $500 scholarships to recent Delavan High School graduates, Jayley Fisher and Kenzi Espenchied. The recipients were selected from a pool of five applicants based on their achievements, community involvement, and dedication to furthering their education.

The scholarship panel, consisting of Fall Festival President Adam White, Vice President Beth Zimmer, and committee members Rita Mont and Lori Leskovisek, carefully reviewed the applications to select the recipients.

The scholarship presentation took place at a meeting of the Fall Festival Committee on Monday, May 19, with Delavan Fall Festival Vice President Beth Zimmer presenting the award to Fisher. Espencheid, unable to attend the ceremony, was recognized for her accomplishment and will receive her scholarship separately.

The committee’s annual scholarship program highlights its commitment to fostering education and supporting the youth in the community. Fisher and Espencheid will be pursuing their studies in their respective fields, bringing the spirit of Delavan with them into the next chapter of their lives.

Authorities arrested a suspect on Sunday afternoon following a foot pursuit in connection with multiple ongoing investigations.

At approximately 1:52 PM on May 18, a Delavan Police Department officer was in the 300 block of W 3rd Street responding to a violation of a court order. During the investigation, Wallace McCreary was identified as the suspect in both the court order violation and an additional case involving multiple residential burglaries.

Upon being approached, McCreary fled on foot, prompting a pursuit. The Delavan Police Department, with assistance from the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois State Police K9 Unit, successfully apprehended McCreary and transported him to the Tazewell County Jail. He was booked on preliminary charges, including Residential Burglary, Theft, Criminal Trespass, Violation of a Stalking No Contact Order, and Resisting/Obstructing a Peace Officer.

During the pursuit, a Delavan Police Officer sustained injuries. Thanks to the Delavan Ambulance Service and first responders, the officer received immediate medical care at the scene before being transported to a local hospital, where they were treated and later released.

Delavan residents and car enthusiasts gathered yesterday for another successful Delavan Cruise-In, a beloved community tradition that brought 52 vehicles to the show. The event was a celebration of classic and custom automobiles, drawing crowds eager to admire the craftsmanship and history of the stunning rides on display.

Among the highlights was a 50/50 raffle, with Brian Cunningham winning $85, which he generously donated to the Delavan Optimists Club. Dennis Lynn, who displayed his 1990 Plymouth Laser, enjoyed double the luck, securing not only a door prize but also the $100 Drawing Prize.

A number of attendees also walked away with special door prizes, including Dan Brooks, Joe Stevenson, Eric Samp, Dick and Janet Young, Pat Swingle, Sharon Hatmaken, Richard Aper, and Dennis Lynn.

The Cruise-In once again proved to be a fantastic event for the community, bringing car lovers together to appreciate automotive history while enjoying the camaraderie that makes Delavan’s events so special. Organizers extend their gratitude to everyone who participated and encourage those who missed it to bring their ride next time!

For the fourth year in a row, Guy Allen, senior economist in the International Grains Program, which is part of the Department of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University, led a group of Korean grain buyers on an intensive, whirlwind tour of grain trading facilities, ports and ag export infrastructure in the Midwest. The itinerary tracked the Mississippi River export corridor, beginning in Chicago and ending in New Orleans.

Participants were sponsored by KOAA (the Korea Overseas Agro-Resources-Development Association), a Korean government-sponsored partner for the globalization of Korean agricultural business.

The tour began in Chicago on April 28 with an agricultural overview at CME Group, the world’s leading derivatives marketplace, offering a wide range of global benchmark products across all major asset classes, including agricultural commodities. The first session was presented by Fred Seamon, executive director of the agricultural research and product development of CME Group. In the afternoon, the group visited two trading facilities: Plus500 in Chicago and brokers Advance Trading Inc., in Bloomington, IL.

Next, the group of 11 traveled by bus to Joliet, Ill., where they visited the Joliet Container Logistics Center and the DeLong Grain Company Container Terminal, as well as the Marquis Grain Company facility in Hennepin, IL. They then toured the Illinois Grain Farm in Putnam, IL., before winding up with dinner in Peoria, IL, where they were joined by Robert Sinkler and Anshu Singh.

Sinkler, former commander of the Rock Island Engineer District in the Quad Cities, is a transportation consultant who has been instrumental in joining together many of the small ports and terminals in the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers into statistical port districts, including the Corn Belt Ports. Singh is the director of sustainability and conservation at the Corn Belt Ports. The tour group visited one of the ports at Hampton, IL.

The next day, April 30, began with a visit to Peoria Lock and Dam, followed by a bus trip to James Reid’s Yellow Dent Corn Monument in Delavan, IL. Reid was a renowned farmer in central Illinois in the mid-1800s, who crossed gourdseed with little yellow corn, a northern flint, to create Reid’s yellow dent, a corn strain that increased yields and served as the basis for most of today’s varieties. Reid’s great-grandson, Matt Shipton, works in the seed industry today. A tour of Encompass Grain’s Union Pacific Railroad shuttle train loader at Allen Station, west of the elevator in San Jose, IL, followed.

From central Illinois, the group headed to Alton, IL., where they toured the Melvin Price Lock and Dam (Lock and Dam 26), the last lock on the Upper Mississippi River system, located at Mile 200.78 on the Upper Mississippi River, 17 miles north of St. Louis, and a key transit point for grain cargoes southbound to the Gulf Coast for export. Guiding that part of the tour was Andy Schimpf, operations manager with the St. Louis Engineer District’s Rivers Project Office. Mel Price has just reopened its main, 1,200-foot lock chamber. Modernizing and completing the lift gate replacement at Melvin Price concluded the third phase in a multi-year maintenance project to improve operational efficiency and ensure navigation on the Upper Mississippi River.

That afternoon, the group visited the Gateway National Museum, under the Gateway Arch, whose exhibits detail the commercial history of St. Louis, then took a break at the Saint Louis Galleria Mall.

The group wound up its trip in New Orleans, where it visited Russell Marine Group and toured the river. The group then visited Cargill’s Reserve Export Marine Terminal in Westwego, LA.

It’s a lot to take in and digest in one trip, Allen said, but he said trips like this can be very productive.

“There’s no substitute for seeing the locks and dams, and these students regularly tell me it’s their favorite part of the trip,” he said.

Allen said interest in the tours is huge, and he could easily double the number of attendees.

The aroma of freshly baked pizza and the hum of friendly conversation filled Trios Pizzeria as Brian Walder, meteorologist and host of Channel 25 WEEK’s popular segment "You Gotta Eat," stepped through the doors. Known for showcasing hidden culinary gems across Central Illinois, Walder’s latest stop brought him to this beloved pizzeria nestled in the heart of Downtown Delavan.

Trios, a cozy family-friendly eatery with a reputation for its hand-tossed crusts and rich, homemade sauces, has quickly become a favorite spot in town. As Walder sampled their veggie pizza and Trios' signature supreme pizza cone, he chatted with two of the owners, Adam White and Laura Calsyn, about their commitment to quality ingredients and the welcoming atmosphere that keeps locals coming back.

"It's all about family here," said Calsyn. "We wanted to create a place for everyone to be able to come together. With the restaurant and the arcade next door… It’s a whole experience."

Walder, known for his engaging on-air presence, took viewers through the menu, highlighting fan favorites. Between bites, he praised the balance of flavors that sets Trios apart.

Walder and videographer Andrew Best enjoyed warm hospitality from Jaxton Westbrook, Bri Haradon, Ashley Watkins, and Trios' owners—Adam White, Laura Calsyn, and Josh Grys. Enhancing the family-friendly vibe, Calsyn and Grys’ children—Ryker, Knox, Hayes, and Cash—were also on hand, making the visit even more special.
