From the moment Peter Burton and Tim Gerrity cross paths, you can feel the imbalance. One is driven by ambition that borders on desperation, the other by a belief in doing things the right way. That contrast is what keeps the film going, and it never really strays from that lane.

John Cusack plays against type here, and that alone gives the film a strong foundation. There’s a controlled intensity to his performance that keeps you locked in, even when the writing starts to show its seams. Peter isn’t just ambitious, he’s constantly calculating, constantly adjusting, always looking for the next move that gets him closer to where he thinks he belongs. Cusack leans into that mindset without overplaying it, which makes the character more unsettling than outright villainous.

James Spader works as the counterbalance, but the film doesn’t give him quite as much room to grow and ultimately to operate as the character needs. Tim is positioned as the moral center, the one who believes in structure, integrity, and the idea that the system can work if you follow it. Spader plays that role well, but the character feels a little too constrained. Where Cusack gets layers, Spader gets a framework, and that imbalance becomes noticeable the longer the film goes on.

The dynamic between them is what carries everything. Their friendship starts with a clear friction, grows into something deeper and more genuine, and then slowly breaks down as their paths diverge. That progression is where the film is at its strongest, especially in the quieter moments where trust begins to erode. You can feel the tension building, even if you already know where it’s heading. That predictability is where the film starts to lose some of its impact. It doesn’t hide its intentions, and while that can work in a character-driven story, it also means there aren’t many surprises along the way. The film lays out its themes early; it wants to explore ambition versus integrity, loyalty versus self-interest, and then follows that path without much deviation. There’s nothing wrong with that approach, but it does limit how far the story can go.

The supporting cast really helps the film develop in surprising ways. Mandy Patinkin brings a quiet menace to his role, never needing to raise his voice to establish control. Richard Widmark adds a level of control that grounds the political side of the story, giving the film a sense of scale it might not have otherwise. Even when the script leans into familiar territory, these performances keep things engaging. It’s not just their performances that are incredible, but also the way that they interact with the world, shown here.

The film struggles with how it handles its deeper ideas. It wants to say something about power, about the cost of success, about the way politics shapes and distorts personal relationships. Those ideas are all present, but they’re never explored in depth enough to leave a lasting impression. The film touches on them, acknowledges them, and then moves on. I’m intrigued by this aspect; it doesn’t make the film bad, but it makes me wonder if there was more to the film, a longer cut that was left on the editing room floor that allowed the film to explore these thoughts and ideas.

There’s also a sense that the story is moving faster than it should. Key developments happen rapidly, sometimes without the buildup, which makes certain moments feel less impactful than they might have with more time to breathe. The foundation is there for something more layered, but the execution doesn’t always follow through.

The film is consistently watchable. It moves at a steady pace, keeps its focus on the central relationship, and never feels like it’s wasting time. Even when it’s predictable, it’s still engaging enough to hold your attention, largely because of how committed the performances are. What you’re left with is a film that works in the moment but doesn’t quite stick with you once it’s over. Cusack’s performance stands out, Spader holds things together, and the supporting cast adds weight where it’s needed. But the story itself never pushes past its own limitations.

There’s a sharper, more impactful version of this somewhere in the material, one that digs deeper into the choices these characters make and the consequences that follow. Instead, TRUE COLORS settles into being a solid, well-acted drama that doesn’t quite reach the level it feels like it’s aiming for.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
