RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>M\u0100RAMA is a gothic horror film that distinguishes itself not so much by its structure as by its clarity of purpose. It takes a framework well known in the genre, an outsider arriving at an isolated estate with secrets buried in its walls. It reshapes it through a different perspective that prioritizes identity, inheritance, and cultural violation. The result is a film that is less concerned with surprise and more focused on controlled, deliberate storytelling.<\/p>\n

The story is focused on taking its time and exploring it at a measured pace, following a young M\u0101ori woman who travels to England in search of answers about her past. What she finds instead is a world built on appropriation and distortion, where her heritage has been gathered (stolen), displayed, and stripped of its meaning. The film doesn’t rush to reveal this; instead, it allows the realization to emerge gradually. This slow-burn approach is one of its defining characteristics, and while it occasionally tests patience, it also reinforces the emotional struggle of the story.<\/p>\n

Ari\u0101na Osborne carries the film with a performance that is restrained yet uniquely precise. She avoids the more exaggerated tendencies often found in horror leads, choosing instead to internalize the character’s transformation. Her presence anchors the film during its quieter stretches, particularly when it relies more on atmosphere than plot progression. There is a clear sense of control in how she navigates the character’s arc, moving from uncertainty to awareness without abrupt shifts.<\/p>\n

Toby Stephens provides a strong counterbalance, delivering a performance that is composed but consistently unsettling. His character embodies the story's tension, working around the idea behind this conflict as the “perfect” surface of authority that masks deeper corruption. The dynamic between the two leads is never overtly confrontational, until it needs to be, allowing the tension to build naturally over time.<\/p>\n

M\u0100RAMA is one of the more cohesive gothic horror films in recent years. The cinematography emphasizes shadow, texture, and spatial restriction, creating an environment that feels both grandiose and suffocating. Interiors are designed to feel oppressive, filled with objects that carry history but are stripped of their original context. This reinforces the film’s focus without requiring explicit exposition. The production design supports the story, ensuring the setting is far more than just a backdrop for the story to unfold against.<\/p>\n

The film’s use of sound and silence is similarly balanced. Rather than relying on sudden, extreme hits or exaggerated audio design, it allows quiet moments to carry tension just as much as the most extreme moments. This restraint contributes to the overall tone, though it also highlights one of the film’s limitations. At times, reliance on atmosphere comes at the expense of the story's momentum.<\/p>\n

Thematically, the film remains focused throughout. It examines colonialism not as a distant historical concept, but as an ongoing presence that shapes identity and memory. These ideas are integrated directly into the story, rather than presented as separate commentary. While this progression is anticipated, the execution doesn’t capitalize on the tension you build in the way you might expect. The payoff is effective in terms of thematic resolution, but it lacks the intensity I had set as an expectation. Ultimately, that works and makes the film better.<\/p>\n

Despite these perceived struggles, M\u0100RAMA establishes a clear identity. It doesn’t attempt to conform to conventional horror expectations, nor does it rely on excessive stylistic flourishes to maintain interest. Instead, it focuses on tone, performance, and cohesion. This makes it a more deliberate viewing experience, one that prioritizes reflection over perceived engagement.<\/p>\n

The film’s greatest strength is its perspective. Grounding a gothic horror story in M\u0101ori culture and history adds a level of specificity often missing from the genre. This perspective informs every aspect of the film, from its visual design to its storytelling choices. Even when the pacing falters or the structure feels predictable, that foundation remains intact.<\/p>\n

M\u0100RAMA isn’t a perfect film, but it’s consistently purposeful and knows what it's trying to achieve. It understands what it wants to explore and commits to that direction without compromise. While it may not have realized the potential in its bones, it remains a strong and distinctive entry within the genre.<\/p>\n
