RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>SATURNALIA doesn’t shy away from what it wants to be. From the very beginning, it's clear this is a film built on admiration, drawing directly from the DNA of 1970s Italian giallo horror but made in Virginia! That kind of approach can be risky. Lean too far into homage and the film loses its own identity. Hold back too much, and it feels like a missed opportunity. What makes SATURNALIA work as often as it does is how confidently it commits to that inspiration, even when it doesn’t escape its pull.<\/p>\n

Set within the walls of an isolated academy, the film builds on a structure that feels familiar, but new at the same time. A new arrival, a strict figure of authority, and a growing sense that something beneath the surface isn’t right. It’s a setup that evokes a specific lineage of horror, and the film doesn’t pretend otherwise. Instead, it leans into that familiarity and reshapes it through tone and presentation rather than reinvention.<\/p>\n

The tone is where SATURNALIA finds its strongest vibe. The atmosphere is thick, sometimes overwhelming, but intentionally so. There’s a surreal quality that runs through much of the film, blurring the line between what’s real and what’s imaginary. It doesn’t always explain itself, and it doesn’t need to; doing so would weaken the film's structure. The uncertainty becomes part of the experience. You’re not meant to understand everything as it’s happening. You’re meant to feel it first.<\/p>\n

The use of color, especially those deep, saturated reds and harsh lighting contrasts, gives the entire setting a heightened, almost dreamlike quality. Her rapport with her peers becomes one of the film's greatest strengths. There’s something unforgettable about their back and forth; it’s surface-level, but the looks and stares really do a lot of the work here.<\/p>\n

Velvet’s presence as the headmistress adds a sense of control and menace. The character operates more as a symbol than as a fully fleshed-out character, but that works within the film. She represents the authority the story is pushing against, and her performance leans into that with just enough restraint to keep it from becoming overly exaggerated.<\/p>\n

The supporting cast effectively fills in the space around them, particularly in how they reflect the shifting dynamics within the academy. The way the students interact, turning on each other, forming alliances, and reacting to punishment, adds a deeper level of thinking to the world. It reinforces the idea that the real horror isn’t just what’s hidden within the school, but also how easily people can be manipulated under pressure.<\/p>\n

At its core, SATURNALIA is less interested in telling an original story and more focused on recreating a feeling. It wants to capture that sense of unease, that tension, that intensity that defined a specific genre of horror. It understands what made those films resonate and channels that energy into something new without stripping away what made them distinct.<\/p>\n

What makes SATURNALIA so worth watching is that commitment. It knows exactly what it wants to be, and it doesn’t compromise on that vision. It may not redefine the genre it’s pulling from, but it contributes to it in a way that feels vitally important. For viewers who appreciate that style of horror, who are willing to embrace a film that prioritizes atmosphere over clarity, there’s a lot here to connect with.
