It doesn’t build toward some grand reveal. It stays small on purpose, focusing on a single perspective and letting that do the work. Short films' success comes from the impact that they can create, and even more so, the impact that they can leave with you. HAND does that in strides, taking an intimate story that understands the impact it's having on audiences.

The story follows Lin, an undocumented cook trying to hold onto something in a life that offers very little. The film doesn’t shape his situation into a dramatic arc. It treats it as something ongoing, built from repetition and pressure rather than a single defining moment. That approach gives the film a sense of honesty that never feels forced. This is a universal story told through the eyes of a segment of one man's life.

Zhan Wang’s performance holds everything together. He doesn’t rely on dialogue to explain what Lin is feeling. It’s all in how he carries himself, how he moves through spaces, how he reacts without drawing attention. There’s a constant awareness in his behavior, as if every action is being examined before it happens. That restraint makes the performance feel grounded, and it keeps the film from slipping into anything exaggerated.

The kitchen he works in becomes more than just a setting. It’s the only place where there’s a sense of order, even if it’s limited. Outside of it, there’s no real control. The film doesn’t need to spell that out. It’s clear how Lin navigates each space and how his body language shifts depending on where he is. That contrast gives the film structure without relying on plot to define it. The presence of anti-Asian aggression sits in the background rather than being pushed to the front. The film doesn’t build scenes around confrontation. It allows that tension to exist in smaller ways, shaping how people interact and how Lin responds. That choice makes it feel closer to reality. The threat isn’t always visible, but it’s always there, shaping behavior in ways that don’t need explanation.

There’s a strong sense of distance throughout the film. Even when others surround Lin, there’s a separation that never goes away. The film doesn’t try to close that gap or even try to “resolve” it. It just lets it exist, which fits with everything else it’s doing. It trusts the viewer to pick it up without needing to underline it.

At 24 minutes, the film doesn’t have room to wander, and it doesn’t try to. Every scene moves with purpose, building toward something that feels inevitable rather than constructed. The pacing stays consistent with that approach. It doesn’t rush, but it doesn’t linger either. It keeps its focus on the experience it’s trying to capture and doesn’t step outside of it. With events in the US over the last year and a half, this story could have had a clearer vision; instead, it pushes away from that easy grab and continues to focus on this slice of the story.

The film avoids anything that would distract from the focus. There’s no stylization meant to elevate the material. It keeps everything close to the ground, which makes the story feel immediate. It plays less like something designed and more like something observed. It’s a gorgeous film in its intimacy, but that’s why it’s not overwhelming.

The restraint is what will divide people. The film doesn’t build to a traditional climax and doesn’t offer a clear resolution. It ends in a way that reflects the ongoing nature of what it’s portraying, for some, that will feel like it stops short. For others, it will feel consistent with everything that came before it.

Some areas could be expanded with more time. Certain relationships and background details are only touched on. But the film makes a clear choice to stay focused, and that decision works in its favor. Expanding on those elements might have added context, but it could also have pulled attention away from Lin’s experience, which is where the film is strongest.

What stands out most is how the film handles dignity. Lin isn’t framed in a way that asks for sympathy through exaggeration. His situation is difficult, but the film doesn’t reduce him to one thing. There’s a persistence in how he moves forward, even when the environment around him offers very little support. That approach keeps the story grounded and avoids making it overly sentimental.

By the end, the film doesn’t aim for any level of real closure. It leaves you with a clearer understanding of the space Lin occupies and what it takes to exist within it. That choice fits the film’s approach from start to finish. It doesn’t try to wrap things up, and it doesn’t need to.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
