Honestly, that works in its favor for a good stretch of the runtime. A bomb unearthed in the middle of London is already a built-in ticking clock (literally), but FUZE doesn’t stop there. It folds in a heist that thrives on that chaos, immediately giving the story a dual-arc structure, with one side driven by public danger and the other by calculated opportunism. That intersection is where the film finds its strongest footing, especially early on when everything still feels like it could spiral in multiple directions.

Director David Mackenzie understands how to build tension in confined, procedural-heavy environments, and that experience shows. The opening stretch leans into command-center dynamics, evacuation logistics, and boots-on-the-ground emergencies, all without getting bogged down in jargon. There’s a rhythm to how information moves through the film, how decisions get made, and how consequences ripple outward. It creates a sense of force that pulls you in, even if the broader balance here isn’t doing anything radically new.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson anchors a lot of that initial encounter. There’s a controlled intensity to his performance that fits the tone perfectly, especially in a role that requires both composure and the ability to suggest something more guarded underneath. Theo James, on the other hand, brings a different presence, one that leans into charm and calculation. The dynamic between the two isn’t always explored as deeply as it could be, but there’s enough there to keep their interactions interesting, especially as motivations begin to blur.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw adds some authority, helping ground the film's procedural side. Her performance gives weight to the decision-making process, which is crucial in a story where so much depends on timing and control. Even when the script leans into exposition, she makes those moments feel purposeful rather than purely functional.

Where FUZE really clicks is in its first half, when the balance between the bomb threat and the heist remains focused and easy to track. The tension feels earned because both sides of the story are moving in sync, each escalation feeding into the other. There’s a satisfying push and pull between urgency and strategy, and for a while, it feels like the film has a clear grip on its own structure.

But as the narrative starts layering in additional twists, that clarity begins to slip. Instead of sharpening the tension, the story starts complicating it. The heist elements become more convoluted than they need to be, and the shifting alliances, while interesting, don’t always hit with the impact they’re aiming for. It’s not that the ideas are bad; it’s that they aren’t given enough space to breathe before the next turn arrives. That’s where the film starts to feel a little caught between two identities. On one hand, it wants to be a tightly constructed procedural thriller. On the other hand, it’s chasing the kind of layered, twist-heavy narrative that requires a stronger foundation to work. The result is a back half that feels more mechanical than immersive, as if the film is checking off plot beats rather than building toward something inevitable.

Even so, FUZE never loses its grip. Mackenzie keeps things moving at a steady pace, and the runtime works in the film’s favor. It doesn’t linger long enough for its weaker elements to drag it down, and there’s still a baseline level of engagement that carries through to the end. The action is clean, the stakes are clear, and there’s just enough unpredictability to keep things from feeling entirely routine.

The film is so focused on structure and execution that it doesn’t spend enough time making you care about the people caught in the middle. The characters function well within the mechanics of the story, but they rarely break through in a way that adds weight to the outcome. The ending feels more like part of a plan than the culmination of a journey. After building up a scenario that promises something “explosive”, the resolution feels surprisingly restrained. It’s not unsatisfying, but it doesn’t deliver the kind of payoff the premise sets you up to expect. There’s a sense that the film pulls back just when it should be leaning all the way in.

Though there’s something to be said for a film that knows how to keep things moving, FUZE understands the appeal of this kind of story and delivers enough tension and solid performances to make it a worthwhile watch. It’s the kind of thriller that works best when you meet it on its own terms, not expecting something groundbreaking, but appreciating the craft that makes a familiar formula feel engaging again. It’s not aiming to be the smartest or the most emotionally resonant film in the room. It’s aiming to be effective, and for the most part, it gets there.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
