The apocalypse has already happened, the rules are there, and instead of chaos, what’s left is routine. People have conversations, they process the terror around them, they try to maintain some version of normal life, even as the world continues to erode. It’s a deliberate shift away from what the zombie genre typically leans on, and for a while, that shift feels genuinely refreshing.

At the center of it all is Vinita, a podcaster who has carved out a strange kind of purpose in a world where purpose doesn’t come easily anymore. Her show acts as both a lifeline and a distraction, a way to connect with whoever might still be listening, even as that audience continues to shrink. The concept is unique and works so well because it taps into the idea that, even at the end of everything, people will still try to be heard, still try to make sense of what’s left, still try to hold onto identity through whatever tools they have available. That’s where the film finds its footing, and for a while, it works.

The dynamic between the characters carries an anxiety that feels rooted in something recognizable. This isn’t a group of survivors defined by action or strategy; it’s a group defined by how they respond to loss, cope with isolation, and struggle to agree on what survival even means anymore. The arrival of a baby into that world shifts the stakes in a way that feels surprisingly organic. It forces the characters to confront questions they’ve been avoiding and reframes their situation from manageable to fragile. There’s a version of this film where that shift becomes the driving force, where every decision carries more weight because of it, where the emotional conflict builds into something unavoidable. That version never materializes here for some reason.

Instead, DIDN’T DIE settles into a pattern where it revolves around its own dissertation rather than pushing it forward. The conversations are often thoughtful, sometimes sharp, but rarely escalate the story as needed. Scenes feel like they’re searching for a turning point that doesn’t come, and the film starts to lose momentum because of it. What begins as intentional restraint gradually turns into hesitation, albeit minus a scene or two that really focuses on the subdued horror in this world.

The film wants to be both a character-driven drama and a genre piece, but it never really commits to either enough to lock in. The horror elements are present, but they’re pushed to the background so often that they stop feeling like a real threat. The “biters” exist more as a concept than a danger for much of the runtime, which undercuts the tension the story needs to sustain itself. At the same time, the emotion doesn’t dig quite as deep as it could. The themes of grief, regret, connection, and the lingering weight of decisions made before everything collapsed but they’re explored at a surface level more often than not. You can see what the film is reaching for, but it keeps stopping just short of engaging with the real idea here. That’s where the frustration comes in, because the potential is obvious.

There are moments where everything equalizes, where the performances, the tone, and the writing all click into place. Kiran Deol carries a lot of that, bringing a sense of lived-in exhaustion to Vinita that makes the character feel real even when the script doesn’t. The black-and-white presentation adds a distinct identity, helping set the film apart from others in the genre and giving it a stark, almost reflective quality that fits its introspective approach.

The pacing becomes a real issue as it moves into the latter half. The story stretches itself without adding anything new, and what should feel like a slow build instead feels like a delay. There’s a sense that the film is holding back, waiting for the right moment to engage, but when that moment arrives, it doesn’t have the impact it should. It’s not that the film doesn’t have anything to say; it’s that it doesn’t push hard enough to say it.

What makes DIDN’T DIE interesting is also what keeps it from being more than that. It avoids the expected, it strips away the spectacle, and it focuses on the quieter side of survival. That’s a direction the genre doesn’t explore often enough, and there’s real value in that approach. At the same time, choosing that path means the film has to find its tension elsewhere, and it never quite figures out how to replace what it removes. This feels like something that may have worked better as a short film.

That leaves it in an awkward middle ground. It’s too restrained to function as a traditional horror film, but not sharp enough to land as a character study. It exists in between, which can work when everything is firing, but here it creates a sense of incompleteness that lingers long after it ends.

This is the kind of film where you walk away thinking about what it could have been just as much as what it is. There’s a clear creative voice behind it, and there are moments that show exactly how effective that voice can be. It just never commits to its own strengths. That doesn’t make it a failure, but it does keep it from reaching the level it feels like it’s aiming for. There’s something here, something worth engaging with, something that stands apart from the usual approach to this genre. It just doesn’t go far enough to leave a lasting impact. And that’s what makes it such a frustrating watch, because you can see exactly how close it gets.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
