They were crude, sometimes outright offensive, often messy, but there was still a sense of play to them. Even at their most chaotic, they understood entertainment. There was energy behind the nastiness, a wink behind the excess, and something that made the whole thing feel like it was in on its own joke. RED RABBIT LODGE clearly wants to live in that space. The problem is that it borrows the surface traits without understanding what made those films work in the first place.

A group of young people settles into a place with a violent past, a masked killer lurks around every corner, and one central character is trying to outrun something personal while stepping directly into something worse. That framework is reliable for a reason. It gives you room for tension, character friction, escalation, and payoff. But almost immediately, the film leans into a tone that undercuts its own potential.

The biggest issue here is how the film handles its darker elements, particularly the inclusion of sexual violence. This isn’t something that’s treated with intent, nor is it used in a way that meaningfully connects to character or theme. It’s presented like a smack across the face, then folded into a broader tone that still aims to be a grimy, irreverent throwback. That disconnect is hard to ignore. Instead of adding intensity or emotional stakes, it creates a fracture that the film never recovers from. You can’t bounce between crude humor and that level of subject matter without a very deliberate approach, and RED RABBIT LODGE never shows that kind of control.

That lack of control extends to the film’s attempt at humor. There’s a constant push toward vulgar, abrasive comedy, but it rarely lands as funny. It’s not that horror comedy needs to be clever, but it does need some kind of reasoning to exist. Timing matters. Contrast matters. Even the dirtiest, most lowbrow jokes still rely on delivery and escalation. Here, the humor feels more like an afterthought layered on top of scenes that are already struggling to build tension. Instead of breaking the pressure or adding personality, it flattens everything into the same tone.

The performances don’t have much room to elevate the material either. There are moments where you can see attempts at personality, flashes where characters could’ve leaned into exaggerated archetypes or pushed the tone further into something more self-aware. But the script doesn’t give them enough to work with. Characters move through the story more as functions than as people, reacting to events rather than shaping them. That lack of presence makes it harder for the film to build any kind of attachment, which is especially important in a slasher. If the audience doesn’t care who’s being targeted, the violence loses impact almost immediately.

The film gestures toward that retro slasher identity without committing to it. There are hints of style, but they’re inconsistent. The lodge itself should feel like something oppressive, isolated, or unpredictable. Instead, it comes across as a backdrop that the film doesn’t know how to use. That’s a missed opportunity, especially given how much of the tension should be rooted in that environment.

What’s frustrating is that there are occasional glimpses of what the film could have been. Certain sequences hint at a more focused version, one where the violence is sharper, the tone is clearer, and the pacing actually builds toward something. But those moments are buried under stretches that feel aimless. The film doesn’t escalate in a meaningful way. It moves forward, but it doesn’t build. By the time it reaches its final stretch, there’s an attempt to deliver the kind of payoff this genre thrives on. More intensity, more violence, more urgency. But it comes too late, and without the groundwork needed to make it satisfying. A strong ending in a slasher isn’t just about what happens; it’s about how it’s earned. Here, it feels like the film is trying to catch up with itself rather than deliver a built conclusion.

The bigger issue is that RED RABBIT LODGE doesn’t seem to understand its own identity. It gestures toward nostalgia, exploitation, and horror comedy, but it never locks into any of them in a way that feels intentional. The humor isn’t sharp enough to carry the film. The horror isn’t developed enough to create real tension. The more extreme elements aren’t handled with the care or purpose needed to justify their inclusion. Everything sits in an awkward middle space where nothing quite works the way it should.

The film had a clear reference point but missed the underlying mechanics that made that reference appealing. There’s a version of this that could’ve leaned harder into camp, embraced its grime with more confidence, and delivered something chaotic but fun. Instead, it feels mean without being effective, crude without being entertaining, and uneven in ways that keep it from ever finding a consistent voice. It’s not just that it fails to capture the spirit of the films it’s inspired by; it's that it fails to capture the spirit of the films it's inspired by. It feels like it misunderstands why those films still work at all.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
