It doesn’t behave like a traditional story, doesn’t build toward a single clear destination, and doesn’t seem particularly concerned with guiding the audience through anything in a conventional way. Instead, it settles into something more observational, where meaning isn’t handed to you but slowly revealed through accumulation.

The film centers on a family, but even calling it a “story about a family” feels slightly misleading. It’s more accurate to say it spends time with them. Each member exists within their own world, dealing with personal anxieties, quiet ambitions, or moments of emotional awkwardness that never feel exaggerated, even when the film itself leans heavily into the surreal. That balance between grounded emotion and visual absurdity becomes the film’s defining strength.

What makes that balance work is how casually the film introduces its strangest ideas. A giant version of a young girl trailing behind her isn’t treated like a major event. It simply exists, folded into the film's reality without explanation. That approach extends across the entire runtime. Musical detours, animated sequences, and moments that feel pulled from a completely different tone are all allowed to coexist without needing to justify themselves.

It’s a risky structure, especially at this length. At over two hours, the film has every opportunity to lose momentum, and there are moments when it slows to a near standstill. The episodic nature means not everything carries the same importance. There are stretches where the film feels like it’s drifting rather than progressing, where individual moments don’t build toward anything larger in a traditional sense.

But that lack of urgency is also what gives the film its identity. It isn’t trying to move quickly. It’s trying to observe. The pacing allows space for small interactions to land, for awkward silences to feel meaningful, for characters to exist without being pushed toward resolution. It asks for patience, but when it works, that patience pays off in ways that feel unexpectedly personal.

The performances are key to maintaining that framework. It relies on the ensemble functioning as a unit. Every character feels distinct, yet none dominate the film. Tadanobu Asano brings a loose, almost unpredictable energy, while the younger performances carry a quiet sincerity that keeps the film from drifting too far into abstraction. It never feels like anyone is trying to “sell” the weirdness. They simply exist within it.

What stands out most is how the film captures discomfort without turning it into conflict. Much of what these characters experience is internal social anxiety, creative frustration, unresolved feelings, the kind of things that rarely get clean resolutions. Instead of forcing those elements, the film allows them to sit, to evolve slowly, or, sometimes, not to resolve at all. That choice gives the film a rare kind of honesty, even when everything around it is exaggerated.

Some moments in the film are simple and observational, almost documentary-like in their framing of everyday life. Others push into exaggerated, stylized territory that borders on the absurd. That contrast shouldn’t work as well as it does, but it creates a sense that the film is operating on multiple emotional frequencies at once. Reality and imagination aren’t separated; they’re layered. Some viewers will struggle with how scattered the film can feel, especially if they’re looking for a clear narrative throughline. It’s a film that prioritizes tone and feeling over structure, and that trade-off won’t land for everyone.

Where it ultimately succeeds is in how it accumulates meaning over time. Individual scenes might feel disconnected in the moment, but by the end, there’s a sense that everything has contributed to a larger emotional picture. Not in a way that ties everything together, but in a way that reflects how life actually feels, fragmented, inconsistent, occasionally strange, but still coherent when viewed as a whole.

There’s also something reflective about how the film approaches family. It doesn’t idealize or critique it. It simply presents these relationships as they are, filled with awkwardness, affection, distance, and moments of connection that don’t always arrive when expected. It’s messy in a way that feels intentional, never polished into something overly sentimental.

The restoration only enhances the experience. The film’s visual identity, with its mix of natural landscapes and surreal intrusions, benefits from the added clarity, allowing those contrasts to feel even more pronounced without losing their softness.

In the end, THE TASTE OF TEA isn’t something that hits all at once. It settles in gradually. Certain moments stick, certain images linger, certain emotional beats resurface long after the film has moved on. It doesn’t demand a reaction; it invites one. And if you’re willing to meet it on its own terms, it becomes something special, not because it forces meaning, but because it trusts you to find it.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
