SAURIANS inhabits that space. It’s not trying to compete with anything, not even the films it clearly draws inspiration from. Instead, it exists as a record of someone deciding to make a dinosaur movie with whatever resources were available and refusing to let limitations get in the way of finishing it. That spirit defines every frame. If you know the name Mark Polonia and are familiar with his films, that will give you a starting point, although even this tends to be a bit crazy, even for him.

Shot on Super 8 and stitched together with a mix of stop-motion, puppetry, and homegrown effects, the film doesn’t hide its rough edges. It defaults to them because it doesn’t have another option. The dinosaurs don’t move smoothly. The compositing is obvious. The lighting is inconsistent. None of that is accidental, and none of it is attempted to be corrected. What you’re watching is the raw version of the idea, not a refined one. And strangely, that’s where the film finds its footing.

Polonia’s presence behind and in front of the camera is constant, and you can feel how much of this project rests on his shoulders. There’s no illusion of a large production here. It feels like a handful of people figuring things out as they go, which gives the film a kind of intrigue that more polished low-budget efforts often lose. Even when scenes drag or feel underdeveloped, there’s still a sense that something is being created in real time rather than assembled through a well-worn process.

The pacing is one of its biggest hurdles. Scenes stretch far beyond what they can sustain, often built around conversations that don’t add much beyond filling space between dinosaur appearances. The structure feels loose to the point of drifting, as if the film is waiting for its next major moment instead of building toward it.

When the dinosaurs do show up, they’re exactly what you’d expect and somehow still surprising. The mix of techniques gives them an unpredictable presence. One moment they’re puppets, the next they’re stop-motion creations moving in choppy bursts, and occasionally they shift into effects that feel like they were pulled from entirely different experiments. There’s no consistency, but there’s a strange creativity in how each approach is used. It doesn’t always work, but it never feels like it’s phoning it in.

The decision to dub the dialogue adds another layer of awkwardness that the film can’t quite overcome. Performances feel disconnected from the visuals, creating a constant sense of distance between the actors and their own characters. At times, that disconnect becomes unintentionally funny. At others, it pulls the film further away from any emotional engagement it might have been building. There’s something about the film’s refusal to smooth any of this out that becomes part of its identity. It’s not interested in meeting the audience halfway. It presents itself exactly as it is, flaws intact, and leaves it up to the viewer to decide whether that’s part of the appeal or a barrier they can’t get past.

Where SAURIANS becomes more than just a curiosity is in what it represents. This isn’t a film made with industry backing or technical expertise. It’s a film made because someone wanted to make it, and that intention carries through even when the execution falls apart. There’s a difference between a bad film made without care and one made with more ambition than skill. This firmly falls into the latter category.

The Visual Vengeance release adds an interesting context to the experience. Watching it now, with the added features and restoration efforts, highlights just how much of this film’s legacy is tied to its existence rather than its success. It’s less about what the film achieves on screen and more about the fact that it exists at all, preserved and presented with a level of attention that many similar projects never receive.

It's a film that struggles with pacing, coherence, and technical execution. It often feels repetitive and underdeveloped. But it also has a persistence that’s hard to ignore. There’s no moment where it gives up on itself, even when it probably should. For viewers who connect with DIY filmmaking, there’s something here worth engaging with. Not because it’s good in a conventional way, but because it captures a level of commitment that more refined films rarely need to prove. For everyone else, it will likely feel like a test of patience, one that doesn’t offer enough in return. Either way, it’s not something you’ll mistake for anything else.

Bonus Materials:
New director-approved SD master from original tape elements
Commentary with director Mark Polonia, moderated by the Visual Vengeance crew
The Making of Saurians
Saurians Locations Visit
Actor Todd Carpenter Interview
Kevin Lindenmuth Interview
Saurians Stop Motion Outtakes
Saurians Super 8 Raw Footage
The alternate, never-released Rae Don Home Video version of Saurians
Commentary track for Rae Don version with director Mark Polonia and the Visual Vengeance crew
Bonus Feature Film: The Dinosaur Chronicles (2004)
Commentary track for The Dinosaur Chronicles with director Mark Polonia and the Visual Vengeance crew
The Making of The Dinosaur Chronicles
Saurians Visual Vengeance Trailer
The Dinosaur Chronicles Visual Vengeance Trailer
Saurians 2 Trailer
Visual Vengeance trailers
‘Stick Your Own’ VHS sticker set – FIRST PRESSING ONLY
Reversible sleeve featuring original Saurians VHS art
Folded mini-poster with alternate vintage promotional art
Optional English subtitles
Limited Edition O-Card – FIRST PRESSING ONLY
Limited Edition rare, original piece of Super-8 film from the movie – FIRST PRESSING ONLY

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
