Or more accurately, cue the version of a spy thriller where the world’s fate somehow ends up resting in the hands of an underqualified nepo baby stumbling through missions he shouldn’t survive. CHET BOND: LICENSE TO CHILL understands that the funniest thing is the gap between how Chet sees himself and how everyone else sees him. He moves through the world with confidence, convinced he belongs in the same conversation as legendary secret agents, while the people around him are usually just trying to contain the damage. The mockumentary setup only makes that disconnect funnier, turning every failure at looking cool into something increasingly awkward, chaotic, and weirdly endearing.

Chet isn’t just unqualified; he’s aggressively unqualified. Jack Atkins plays him with a level of confidence that borders on delusion, and that carries a lot of the film. There’s no attempt to soften the character or make him likable. Instead, the humor comes from watching someone operate with complete certainty while consistently making the wrong call.

The framing gives the film its structure, but it also sets its limitations. The “documentary crew embedded with a chaotic subject” concept isn’t new, and the film doesn’t spend much time revamping it. What it does instead is rely on timing and performance to keep it moving. When the jokes work, they land because of delivery, not because of structural twists.

That approach works best in the smaller moments. Offhand comments, awkward exchanges, and background reactions often carry more weight than the larger set pieces. Joel Scher and Shaw Jones play well within that space, grounding the absurdity just enough to keep the world from feeling completely detached. Their presence gives the film a necessary counterbalance, even if their characters don’t always have the depth to stand out.

The budget constraints are obvious, but not in a way that completely undermines the experience. If anything, the film occasionally uses those limitations to its advantage. The scale of the “spy world” here is intentionally small, and that contrast between what Chet thinks he’s part of and what’s actually happening adds to the humor. Still, there are moments where the production can’t quite keep up with the ambition, and those gaps are noticeable.

One of the more interesting aspects is how the film handles tone. It flirts with being self-aware without really committing to parody. There are hints that it understands the absurdity of its own premise on a deeper level, but it doesn’t always push that far enough. At times, it feels like it’s hovering between wanting to satirize spy tropes and simply using them as a backdrop for character-driven humor.

The pacing reflects that same inconsistency. At 28 minutes, it moves quickly by default, but not always as efficiently as it could have. Some jokes take a little too long to develop, while others feel like they’re cut short before they have a chance. That uneven rhythm keeps the film from fully locking into a groove, even when individual scenes work on their own. There’s also a question of how much the film wants you to invest in Chet as more than just a punchline. The idea of a nepo baby stumbling into a high-stakes environment has clear comedic potential, but it also opens the door for sharper commentary. The film touches on that concept, but it doesn’t delve into it as deeply. It’s content to stay on the surface, which fits its tone, but limits its impact.

That said, there’s a level of sincerity underneath the chaos that gives the film some grounding. It doesn’t come through in big emotional moments, but in smaller things where the character’s lack of self-awareness starts to feel less like a joke and more like a genuine flaw. Those glimpses hint at something more developed that the film never fully explores.

What keeps CHET BOND: LICENSE TO CHILL engaging is its commitment. It doesn’t second-guess its tone, and it doesn’t try to reshape itself into something more refined than it is. That confidence carries it through its weaker moments, even if it never quite reaches the level it’s aiming for.

It’s not a film that reinvents its genre or pushes its concept to the limit. But it often delivers on its core idea enough to justify the ride. The humor is hit-or-miss, the structure is loose, and the ambition occasionally outpaces the execution. With all that, there’s still enough here to make it work as a quick, easy watch, especially if you’re on board with what it’s trying to do from the start. CHET BOND: LICENSE TO CHILL doesn’t need to be more than what it is. The question is whether what it is lines up with your sense of humor.
