Instead, the film settles into something quieter and far more uncomfortable: the space where trauma doesn’t announce itself, where it lingers in hesitation, in body language, in the way a child avoids eye contact or clings just a little too tightly. It’s not trying to convince you that what happened matters. It assumes you already understand that, and it moves forward from there.

AFTER THE RAIN: PUTIN’S STOLEN CHILDREN COME HOME doesn’t build itself around the act of abduction as exhibition. That history is present, always hovering in the background, but it’s not what drives the structure. What director Sarah McCarthy chooses instead is the aftermath, the uncertainty that follows survival. These children have been returned, but that isn’t an endpoint. It’s a beginning that feels incomplete by design.

The setting does a lot of the heavy lifting without calling attention to itself. A forest retreat near the Baltic Sea becomes less a place and more a buffer between what these families endured and whatever comes next. There’s a deliberate softness to the environment, from the openness to the animals integrated into the therapy process. Golden retrievers and horses aren’t framed as solutions, but as tools, small points of connection that allow the children to engage with something outside of their own memories.

Conversations unfold in fragments. Some moments feel almost resistant to the camera, as if the presence of documentation itself is something the subjects are still negotiating. That tension doesn’t break the film. It becomes part of its identity. There’s an understanding that not everything here is meant to be articulated, and the film doesn’t push past that boundary just to create clarity.

By refusing to over-explain, McCarthy preserves the authenticity of these interactions. Nothing feels staged, nothing feels shaped to meet an expected emotional arc. But that same choice can leave certain things about the experience underdeveloped. The broader context, while implied, rarely expands beyond what’s already understood going in. Viewers looking for a more detailed examination of the systemic forces behind these events may find themselves filling in those gaps on their own.

The emotion holds. Not because the film builds toward a specific moment, but because it doesn’t. There’s no manufactured breakthrough, no single scene designed to release everything that’s been building underneath. Progress appears in smaller, less defined ways. A child laughs without hesitation. Another begins to speak more openly than they did before. These aren’t framed as victories, but they carry importance because of how they emerge.

The adults in the film exist in a different space altogether. Their presence is marked by a kind of controlled urgency, an understanding that what their children are experiencing can’t be undone. There’s determination in their actions, especially in the lengths some went to bring their children back, but the film doesn’t dwell on those stories. Instead, it reflects them through behavior, through the way they observe, support, and sometimes struggle to know what to say.

There’s also a noticeable absence of overt anger in the film’s tone. That doesn’t mean it isn’t there. It’s just not expressed in a way that dominates the narrative. The focus remains on healing, even when that healing feels incomplete or temporary. The film leans into simplicity. The cinematography avoids unnecessary movement, often holding on moments long enough to let discomfort settle in. The editing follows a similar approach, favoring continuity over rhythm. There’s no attempt to heighten tension through pacing.

What defines AFTER THE RAIN isn’t what it shows, but what it allows to remain unresolved. There’s no illusion that this retreat, or this period of time, will fix what’s been done. The film doesn’t pretend otherwise. It acknowledges that recovery is ongoing, that trauma doesn’t follow a perfectly linear trajectory, and that some of these children are only at the very beginning of understanding what they’ve been through. That gives the film a deeper impact. It doesn’t rely on escalation or shaping to leave an impression. It sits with its subjects, observes them without interference, and allows their experiences to exist without being simplified.

It’s not a documentary that offers closure, and it doesn’t seem interested in doing so. What it provides instead is a look at a moment in time that feels incomplete, because it is. The story continues long after the film ends, and that lingering sense of continuation becomes part of its lasting effect. There’s power in that approach, even if it means the film occasionally feels distant or restrained. It doesn’t reach for emotional manipulation, but it also doesn’t always bridge the gap between observation and deeper insight. That balance won’t work for everyone, but it’s consistent in its intent.

AFTER THE RAIN doesn’t tell you how to feel; it creates space, and then it steps back. For a subject this heavy, that choice carries both weight and risk, and the film lives somewhere in between those two outcomes.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
