The film is messy at times, uneven in places, occasionally rough around the edges, but it also feels alive in a way a lot of low-budget horror doesn’t anymore. Bruce Wemple’s film understands that atmosphere and sincerity can carry imperfections much further than empty technical precision ever could.

What separates it from a wave of interchangeable indie horror releases is that the movie isn’t really driven by death or gore, even though both are present. It’s driven by emotional paralysis. The setup is simple enough, but it makes you question everything when you think about it. Olivia, played by Caitlin Duffy, lives in isolation following the death of her best friend Aurora. Except Aurora isn’t really gone. Their connection has twisted into something supernatural and increasingly dangerous, where grief, dependency, and denial begin bleeding together. Men start disappearing around the farmhouse they inhabit, secrets begin surfacing, and the film gradually mutates from a melancholy character piece into a full supernatural nightmare.

What makes the premise work is that MY BEST FRIEND’S DEAD doesn’t treat horror purely as spectacle. The supernatural elements function like emotional extensions of Olivia’s mental state. Aurora isn’t just a monster lurking in the shadows. She’s unresolved attachment weaponized into something possessive and corrosive. The film repeatedly circles the fear of letting go, even when holding on is actively destroying you. That foundation gives the story more of an impact than the synopsis initially suggests.

Caitlin Duffy carries a significant share of that burden, and she handles it well. Olivia spends most of the film emotionally cornered, torn between comfort and fear, affection and control. Duffy never overplays the character’s anguish, which turns out to be the right approach. There’s exhaustion behind her performance more than hysteria, and that restraint helps the quieter scenes land harder than the film’s louder moments.

Anna Shields (who also wrote the script) also deserves a lot of credit because Aurora could’ve easily become a one-note supernatural presence. Instead, there’s an unsettling intimacy to the performance. Aurora shifts between affection, manipulation, vulnerability, and menace, sometimes within the same conversation. The relationship between the two characters becomes increasingly toxic, but the film understands that emotional dependency rarely looks monstrous at first. That complexity keeps Aurora interesting long after the horror mechanics become clear. The chemistry between Duffy and Shields ultimately becomes the film’s strongest asset.

You believe these characters shared a life before everything collapsed. That history matters because MY BEST FRIEND’S DEAD depends heavily on emotional investment. Without that connection, the film risks becoming another small-scale demon story trapped inside familiar genre territory. Instead, it finds something personal buried underneath the blood and chaos.

The practical effects work carries a rough, handmade quality that actually benefits the movie more often than it hurts it. Jared Balog’s creature and makeup work avoids the overly sanitized digital sheen that dominates so much low-budget horror now. The demons here feel grimy, unstable, and physical. There’s something here that sells it all; there’s a kind of emotional connection to the design work that makes it feel grounded in some ways.

Some viewers will probably wish the mythology surrounding Aurora’s transformation had been explored further, while others may appreciate the ambiguity. The film walks a difficult line between emotional allegory and literal supernatural storytelling. Too many modern horror films mistake trauma references for actual emotional depth. This movie, despite its smaller scale and budgetary constraints, genuinely explores loneliness, grief, co-dependency, and self-destruction beyond surface-level symbolism. Even when the storytelling gets chaotic, there’s still a clear emotional throughline guiding everything beneath the surface.

The movie also benefits from never becoming mean-spirited. There’s darkness throughout the story, but the film doesn’t seem interested in punishing its characters for being who they are. That distinction matters because so much indie horror now defaults to emotional nihilism as shorthand for maturity. MY BEST FRIEND’S DEAD allows space for pain without turning suffering into empty aesthetic decoration.

Bruce Wemple’s direction reflects that balance. He isn’t chasing elevated horror prestige, but he also isn’t making disposable streaming sludge. The film sits somewhere in between, a supernatural thriller that genuinely wants audiences to connect with its characters while still delivering enough blood, tension, and creature chaos to satisfy genre expectations. That combination gives the movie its personality.

MY BEST FRIEND’S DEAD may not reinvent supernatural horror, but its strengths come from intimacy rather than innovation. The performances feel committed. The emotional themes resonate. The atmosphere holds together. Most importantly, the film remembers that horror works best when the monsters represent something human underneath the teeth and violence. By the time the credits roll, what lingers isn’t necessarily the gore or the supernatural mythology. It’s the sadness beneath the relationship at the center of it all, two people trapped in a version of friendship that had long since stopped being healthy, long before the horror truly began.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
