Courtney, Michael Masurkevitch, Honor Spencer, Jenna Vittoria
Where to Watch: launches its theatrical tour on May 22, 2026

RAVING REVIEW: THE LAST ANNIVERSARY opens with the kind of premise that sounds almost too loaded to sustain itself. The apocalypse is hours away. A broken group of former friends reunites inside an abandoned hotel where a woman vanished during a wedding ten years earlier. Ghostly visions start appearing. Old resentments resurface. Buried guilt begins leaking into every conversation. On paper, it feels like a film threatening to collapse under the weight of its own ambition. What’s surprising is that Brett and Jason Butler mostly avoid that collapse by refusing to treat the apocalypse as the main attraction.

The end of the world hangs over the film, but it’s used less as an extravaganza and more as emotional pressure. Everyone entering the hotel understands there’s no tomorrow waiting for them after this night. That knowledge changes the atmosphere. Arguments feel sharper because there’s no future left to repair relationships. Confessions carry more weight because there’s no time remaining to run from consequences. THE LAST ANNIVERSARY becomes less interested in survival than in reckoning.

That approach gives the film a more intimate identity than many indie horror projects pursuing large concepts. Rather than building toward global destruction or explaining the mechanics behind the apocalypse, the Butler Brothers trap the audience inside interpersonal collapse. The abandoned hotel becomes a space where memory begins to rot in real time.

To the film’s credit, though, the slower sections usually serve a purpose. The Butler Brothers clearly want the audience to sit with these characters long enough to understand how guilt has distorted all of them differently. Nobody here feels completely innocent, but the film also avoids reducing the group into cartoonishly awful people waiting for punishment. There’s resentment, selfishness, denial, cowardice, cruelty, and grief circulating constantly, but it all feels recognizably human.

Jesse McQueen and Kenneth Northfield carry much of the influence as Aubrey and Tom. Their anniversary gathering initially plays like nostalgia mixed with melancholy, but it gradually becomes obvious they’re orchestrating something far darker beneath the surface. McQueen especially gives the film an unstable core. Aubrey often feels like someone barely holding herself together emotionally while forcing herself through one final performance before the world ends.

What helps the ensemble overall is that the characters genuinely feel like people with a shared past rather than archetypes assembled purely for a mystery structure. The dialogue occasionally drifts into overly self-aware exchanges, but most interactions maintain an awkward authenticity that fits former friends reconnecting under deeply abnormal circumstances.

The horror elements themselves remain more psychological than visceral for most of the runtime. Brenda’s lingering presence functions less like a traditional ghost and more like collective trauma refusing to stay buried. The film repeatedly blurs whether supernatural events are actually occurring or whether guilt itself is reshaping perception. Those ambiguities become the film’s strongest horror device because they keep the tension rooted in emotional consequence rather than jump scares.

That said, THE LAST ANNIVERSARY mistakes withholding for depth. The Butler Brothers clearly love atmosphere and abstraction, but there are moments when scenes drag on longer than necessary without adding meaningful emotional progression. The pacing doesn’t entirely derail the film, but it does create stretches where the tension plateaus rather than intensifies.

The film also openly carries its influences. THE SHINING comparisons are inevitable, and the Butler Brothers don’t exactly avoid them. The isolated hotel, the emotional disintegration, the haunted spaces within memory, the drifting psychological instability, all of it invites those parallels directly. There are flashes of David Lynch-inspired surrealism, too, particularly in how the film manipulates emotional logic over strict narrative realism. Sometimes they slightly overpower the film’s own identity. There are scenes where THE LAST ANNIVERSARY feels caught between becoming an intimate chamber piece and a more overtly surreal nightmare.

When the film finally begins revealing the truth surrounding Brenda’s disappearance, the payoff lands harder than expected. The final act doesn’t reinvent psychological horror structurally, but it reframes much of the earlier slow-burn material in ways that justify the deliberate pacing more effectively. The horror becomes less about what happened and more about how everyone involved chose to live with it afterward.

The Butler Brothers clearly care more about emotional corrosion than conventional horror. While that choice won’t work for everyone, it gives the film a lingering heaviness that sticks around after the credits. THE LAST ANNIVERSARY may not always maintain the momentum needed to support its ambitions, but there’s enough atmosphere, thematic conviction, and emotional ugliness here to make it memorable. By the end, the hotel no longer feels haunted by Brenda alone. It feels haunted by every compromise, every silence, and every lie these people convinced themselves they could outlive.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
