Then there are movies like FUNGICIDE, where the ambition itself becomes the entire experience. Not because the film succeeds, but because every decision feels powered by unfiltered enthusiasm that eventually bulldozes past limitations and lands in a bizarrely entertaining experience.

Calling this thing “low budget” almost feels too generous. Low budget still suggests some degree of production structure. FUNGICIDE operates closer to the cinematic equivalent of a group of friends weaponizing a camcorder, weekends, homemade vibes, some form of primitive CGI software, and whatever strange idea made them laugh the hardest at two in the morning. The result is eighty-four minutes of homicidal mushroom warfare that somehow feels deeply incompetent and weirdly admirable at the same time. That’s what makes it work in the end; it’s bad, but it knows it's bad.

Where many intentionally campy horror comedies eventually start winking too hard at the audience, FUNGICIDE plays with the confidence of a movie that genuinely believes killer mushrooms engaging in martial-arts combat and vomiting skeletons should be treated as a legitimate crowd-pleasing spectacle. There’s something kind of beautiful about that level of commitment.

The plot barely matters. A mad scientist accidentally mutates mushrooms while staying at a secluded bed and breakfast, unleashing an army of killer fungi onto the surrounding woods and unfortunate guests nearby. That alone already sounds ridiculous, but the movie’s real appeal comes from how wildly inconsistent the mushroom designs become from scene to scene. Sometimes they’re tiny puppets. Sometimes they’re awkward CGI monstrosities that resemble unfinished PlayStation cutscenes from the late 90s. Sometimes they’re very obviously people wandering around in oversized mushroom costumes made from bed sheets and craft-store leftovers. The movie treats every version with complete sincerity. That ends up mattering because FUNGICIDE would collapse instantly if it carried even a trace of irony. Instead, the film approaches it with genuine excitement. Every new reveal feels like the filmmakers are unveiling the coolest thing they could imagine at the time. The effects are objectively terrible, but they’re terrible in ways that become fascinating rather than exhausting.

Modern bad movies often fail because they’re often created by people who don’t understand that passion matters more than effects. They desperately want viewers to laugh at them. FUNGICIDE comes from a different era of DIY horror filmmaking, where creators were simply throwing ideas at the wall because they loved movies and wanted to make one themselves. That difference gives the film an odd energy.

Most performances here fall somewhere between community theater rehearsals and friends improvising at a backyard barbecue. Dialogue delivery ranges from awkwardly flat to aggressively unnatural, and nearly every conversation carries the weight of people waiting for each other to finish reading cue cards. Yet even this eventually becomes part of the experience because the cast never looks embarrassed to be there. Everyone commits to the insanity surrounding them.

Dave Bonavita’s wrestler character honestly becomes one of the movie’s secret weapons simply because his presence perfectly matches the film’s absurdity. Wes Miller’s survivalist Major Wang also feels like he wandered in from an entirely different movie, which somehow improves the expectations. The characters aren’t believable human beings, but realism clearly stopped being the objective long before giant mushrooms started karate in the woods. And yes, those fight scenes are every bit as ridiculous as you’re hoping.

FUNGICIDE frequently abandons horror altogether in favor of extended sequences in which humans battle oversized mushroom creatures with sticks, screaming, and pure backyard energy. The costumes barely function. The CGI occasionally looks like it’s actively disintegrating onscreen. Yet the movie keeps pushing forward with absolute confidence. Somewhere along the way, that confidence becomes infectious.

At the same time, there’s no denying that portions of FUNGICIDE drag. The pacing becomes repetitive during the middle stretch, particularly once the joke establishes itself. The film occasionally mistakes random noise for escalation, stretching scenes long past their natural endpoint because the production seems convinced audiences will remain endlessly entertained by mushroom chaos alone. Some viewers absolutely will. Others will hit their limit.

If someone already hates microbudget SOV horror, nothing here will convert them. The technical flaws are constant. Audio quality fluctuates wildly. The cinematography looks rough even by backyard-horror standards. Digital effects often resemble corrupted computer screensavers. This is not a movie that rewards viewers who search for hidden technical sophistication beneath the camp. There’s an undeniable charm in watching people create something this ambitious despite having essentially no resources. You can feel how much effort went into every moment.

Visual Vengeance also deserves credit for understanding exactly how this kind of movie should be preserved. Releases like this matter because they preserve a strange little corner of horror history that otherwise risks disappearing. The inclusion of the RIFFTRAX version alongside multiple commentary tracks and archival material feels especially appropriate for a movie whose cult status has grown through communal viewing experiences.

At some point, reviewing FUNGICIDE becomes almost meaningless. This isn’t a movie people watch for its elegance. They watch it because it represents pure, unchecked creativity filtered through complete disaster. Sometimes that combination produces unwatchable garbage. Sometimes it creates accidental cult artifacts that are impossible to dismiss. FUNGICIDE lands in the middle of that chaos, stumbling into entertainment through sheer force of personality.

It’s absurd. It’s incompetent. It’s way too long for its premise. The effects are catastrophic. The performances barely function. And yet, against all logic, the movie genuinely feels like a group of people having the time of their lives making something they knew audiences would either hate or treasure forever. Cult cinema survives on movies exactly like this.

Bonus Materials:
Director-approved SD master from original tape elements
New commentary from director Dave Wascavage and co-writer / co-producer Mary Wascavage
Archival commentary with Dave Wascavage, Mary Wascavage, and David Weldon
Commentary from Sam Panico of B&S About Movies and Bill Van Ryn of Drive-In Asylum
Commentary from Schlock And Awe Films
The full RIFFTRAX version of Fungicide
Alternate opening credits
Deleted Scene
Outtakes
Image Gallery
Troubled Moon Trailer Reel
Fungicide – Producer Trailer
Fungicide – Visual Vengeance Trailer
Visual Vengeance Trailers
Reversible sleeve featuring original home video art
Folded mini-poster
‘Stick Your Own’ VHS sticker set – FIRST PRESSING ONLY
Limited Edition O-Card – FIRST PRESSING ONLY
Limited Edition 'Grow Your Own Killer Mushroom' seed packet – FIRST PRESSING ONLY.
Optional English subtitles

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
