NBC’s docuseries looks back across hundreds of millions of years, using CGI to recreate vanished worlds and creatures that lived through environmental disasters so extreme they reshaped the future of life itself. The ambition is easy to appreciate. This is a series about fire, rain, collapse, adaptation, and the persistence of life on a planet that has repeatedly tried to wipe the board clean. The first two episodes offer enough scale and accessible storytelling to make the series watchable, even if the execution doesn’t always match the concept's scale.

The opening episode, “When the Earth Burned,” begins 252 million years ago, during a period of catastrophic volcanic activity that scorched the planet and helped trigger the most devastating mass extinction in Earth’s history. The episode follows a pack of saber-toothed predators as heat, scarcity, and environmental breakdown narrow their chances of survival. It’s a great entry point because the Permian extinction is such a staggering event, not only because of what died, but because of what eventually came after. The series uses that crisis to move toward the rise of reptiles across land, sea, and sky, giving the episode a strong before-and-after structure.

The second episode, “When the Climate Broke,” shifts to 234 million years ago, when prolonged rainfall transformed the planet’s forests and created another period of disruption. Centering the story around a young hippo-like herbivore gives the episode a more intimate focus, and that smaller perspective works better than some of the broader passages early on. Rather than treating prehistoric life as a parade of strange animals, the episode is strongest when it frames climate chaos through the ground-level view of vulnerability. Growth, migration, predation, hunger, and chance become more engaging when the series gives viewers one creature to follow through a world that won’t stay together.

The CGI is generally effective at conveying the scale of the prehistoric world, especially when the series focuses on landscapes and environmental pressures. The burning skies, flooded forests, hostile terrain, and animal designs give SURVIVING EARTH a strong visual identity for network television. It doesn’t always escape the artificiality that can come with this style of documentary reconstruction, and certain creature moments work better than others. Though the series rarely looks phoned in. It knows its attraction is the chance to see worlds no camera could capture, and it delivers that in a way that should hold the attention of viewers who enjoy prehistoric documentaries.

SURVIVING EARTH is informative, but the first two episodes sometimes favor a more simplified narrative flow over a deeper sense of discovery. The best natural history programming doesn’t only show what happened. It makes viewers feel the process of understanding how we know what happened. Watching ancient creatures endure volcanic disaster and climate instability in 2026 is inseparable from the present, even when the series is careful not to become a direct climate lecture. That restraint works to a point. SURVIVING EARTH doesn’t need to stop and underline every modern parallel because the parallels are obvious. A planet pushed out of balance, ecosystems under stress, species trying to adapt faster than the world changes around them, it all lands without much extra commentary.

The sabretooth predators in the premiere and the young herbivore in the second episode give viewers an emotional entry into eras that might otherwise feel too remote. That’s a classic natural history device, but it remains effective when handled with this much care. The danger is that the animals can become too anthropomorphized, shaped into little prehistoric heroes rather than creatures responding to instinct and environment. SURVIVING EARTH walks that line with mixed results. It usually keeps the emotional framing within reason, though there are moments when the drama feels more manufactured than observed.

The first two episodes suggest a series with a solid foundation. It has a compelling concept, strong prehistoric subject matter, and a visual approach that can make ancient catastrophes feel current. It somewhat flattens complexity into familiar survival arcs and could benefit from a sharper sense of curiosity. When SURVIVING EARTH leans into the weirdness of time, the brutality of environmental collapse, and the fact that life kept adapting after every disaster, it becomes more than just a CGI nature series. When it reverts to standard dramatic framing, it feels more ordinary than it should.

SURVIVING EARTH is worth watching for viewers drawn to prehistoric life and large-scale natural-history storytelling, especially those who want something accessible rather than overly scientific or in-depth. It may not redefine what it's aiming for, but there’s enough here to admire. The series understands that survival isn’t a gentle process. It’s violent, random, exhausting, and often dependent on advantages in a world changing too quickly to forgive weakness. That idea gives the show its strongest throughput. Life survives, but SURVIVING EARTH is at its best when it remembers that survival is never guaranteed.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
