Shu-yi doesn’t simply seem unhappy in her marriage; she moves through her life like someone who has learned how to make herself smaller in every room she enters. The house is organized, the family image is intact, and the future has already been planned by everyone except the woman expected to keep it all from collapsing. That’s where Julian Mei-Yu Chou’s film finds what makes this film work, bleed, and hit like a ton of bricks in the exhaustion of a person who has become so used to performing that desire feels less like a romantic possibility than a threat to the entire system around her.

The reunion between Shu-yi and Xue-jin carries the burden of unfinished history. Their connection doesn’t need grand speeches to make sense, because Ariel Lin and Ke-Xi Wu are both skilled at exploring what lies beneath the surface of a conversation. Lin’s performance is built around hesitation, restraint, and the tiny fractures in Shu-yi’s composure, while Wu gives Xue-jin a focused, more unreadable presence. Xue-jin enters the story as both a person and a disruption, someone whose return makes it impossible for Shu-yi to keep pretending her life is only difficult in ordinary ways. BLIND LOVE understands that a past love doesn’t always come back into the picture in a comforting way. Sometimes they come back as evidence.

That matters because Shu-yi’s life has been shaped by the pressure to want the correct things. Marriage, motherhood, respectability, and appearance all sit on her, and the film is at its best when it lets those expectations accumulate without turning them into dialogue. The Taiwanese setting adds another layer, especially given the country’s place in Asian LGBTQIA2S+ history, but Chou doesn’t treat legal progress as a cure-all. The film is less interested in public acceptance than private permission. Shu-yi may live in a changed society, but the emotional structure of her family still demands that she remain the way she’s expected to be, useful and contained.

The mother-son overlap is where the film becomes both more provocative and more unstable. Han’s attraction to Xue-jin gives BLIND LOVE its most openly melodramatic entanglements, and there’s an undeniable boldness in making desire move through the family in such an uncomfortable pattern. On paper, it’s the kind of choice that could turn the film into something lurid or soap-operatic. In practice, it does both. At times, the triangle adds a fascinating discomfort because Han isn’t simply an obstacle; he’s another person trying to escape a future being written for him. His rebellion against his father’s expectations mirrors Shu-yi’s own battles, even if neither of them has the words needed.

The idea of mother and son being drawn toward the same woman is charged enough on its own. BLIND LOVE occasionally leans into coincidence and dramatic near-collisions in a way that feels more engineered. Chou clearly wants the situation to expose buried longing, generational pressure, and the damage caused by lives arranged around silence. Those ideas come through, but the plotting can make them feel more artificial than the performances deserve. The film deals with complicated emotional territory, yet it sometimes chooses the most obvious route through that complication.

Length is another issue, and not simply because BLIND LOVE runs 145 minutes. The film has room to breathe, which often helps the performances, but it also has stretches where the breathing drifts. Chou favors a patient, observational approach, and that patience creates several beautifully tense scenes where glances carry more force than dialogue. However, the film keeps circling similar emotions after they’ve already landed. Shu-yi’s dissatisfaction, Han’s rebellion, Xue-jin’s mystery, and the family’s dysfunction are all established with clarity. The film continues to underline them until some of the intimacy starts to thin out.

Ariel Lin gives the film a center, and she’s especially strong when Shu-yi’s longing slips through before she can contain it. There’s a believable ache in the performance, not just because Shu-yi wants someone, but because she’s beginning to understand how much of herself has been hidden away. Ke-Xi Wu evokes a different longing, making Xue-jin feel both inviting and dangerous without reducing her to a simple fantasy figure. Her presence suggests freedom, but the film is smart enough to question whether one person can truly become another person’s escape route without causing further harm.

BLIND LOVE has enough sincerity and performance-driven strength to stay in your mind. It’s not a film that reduces queer longing to liberation or treats unhappiness as something to be solved by a single act of defiance. Shu-yi’s awakening is messy because her life is, and the film deserves credit for allowing desire to bear its consequences. There’s real feeling in its portrait of a woman confronting the life she accepted, the love she buried, and the damage caused by confusing endurance with devotion. BLIND LOVE doesn’t always reach the depth it’s aiming for, but when it locks onto Shu-yi’s unraveling, it finds something honest, painful, and worth sitting with.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
