Tiki mugs may sound like novelty objects, the kind of thing someone buys on vacation, forgets in a cabinet, or spots on a dusty thrift store shelf. Josh Dragotta’s film treats them differently, with a respect that you wouldn’t necessarily expect. It sees them as sculpture, memory, history, community, and mythology, sometimes all at once.

That’s what makes the documentary work as well as it does. It doesn’t spend 96 minutes trying to convince everyone that Tiki mugs are some huge secret that’s vitally important to the world. It lets the people who love them show why they matter. That differentiation is important. The film is at its best when it stays close to the obsession, exploring the hunt, the preservation, the artistry, the stories attached to specific pieces, and the way an object can shift from kitsch to artifact depending on who holds it. There’s a contagious quality to that enthusiasm. You may not start your own collection after watching the film, but it’s hard not to respect the people who do.

The documentary follows two connected paths. One traces the rise, disappearance, and revival of Tiki culture through the ceramic mugs that became its most recognizable collectibles. The other centers on Doug “Fini” Finical, whose personal collection helped inspire Cabali, a modernist speakeasy-style Tiki bar in Oro Valley, Arizona. The broader history gives the mugs context, while Fini gives the story a human connection. Without him, this could have become a pleasant niche-history documentary.

Fini is such a compelling subject because the movie doesn’t need to make him seem normal. It’s more interesting that he isn’t, at least not in the casual sense. He’s obsessive, deeply invested, and clearly aware that what he’s building may look ridiculous to anyone who doesn’t share the fever. Fini’s passion is sincere, intense, and occasionally ludicrous, which is exactly why it feels real. CABALI AND THE TIKI MUG OBSESSION understands that collectors aren’t always preserving objects because the objects are rare. Sometimes they’re preserving the version of themselves that those objects unlocked.

The film’s sense of community is one of its best qualities. It captures a network of artists, collectors, bartenders, historians, musicians, and enthusiasts who kept a fading culture alive long enough for it to be rediscovered. That rediscovery angle gives CABALI AND THE TIKI MUG OBSESSION more emotion than expected. By the early 1990s, many Tiki bars had faded, and the objects associated with them were being scattered across swap meets, thrift shops, and flea markets. The film frames that period as a kind of rescue mission led by people who saw value before the market caught up. Early online communities, conventions, and artist-driven collecting all became part of the story.

CABALI AND THE TIKI MUG OBSESSION is aware of history. But it’s more comfortable talking about revival, collecting, and artistic appreciation than sitting with the more uncomfortable parts of that legacy. That doesn’t lessen the documentary, because its focus is clearly on the collector community and the artistic afterlife of these objects. A sharper engagement with those tensions would have made the film feel even richer.

The same is true of Fini’s story. The film has a clear affection for him, and that affection is largely earned, but there are moments when it could press harder on the cost of obsession. Building a bar around a collection is a fascinating idea because it turns possession into a shared experience. It takes something private and makes it social. But obsession always has edges, and the documentary occasionally steps back just when it could dig further into what those edges mean for Fini, his collaborators, and the people around him. The film celebrates the dream more than it examines it.

Even with that restraint, CABALI AND THE TIKI MUG OBSESSION has a warm, eccentric pull. It’s the kind of documentary that understands niche culture without mocking it or pretending it needs to be universally relatable. There’s a real joy in watching people speak with expertise about something most viewers have probably never considered in detail. The film respects the tiny distinctions, the makers' histories, the aesthetics of specific mugs, the thrill of finding something on the hunt, and the way an object can carry a whole social world inside it.

This is a strong, engaging documentary with a specific audience and enough craft to reach beyond it. It’s not a cultural takedown, and it doesn’t try to be. It’s a lovingly made portrait of preservation through obsession, with Fini’s Cabali serving as both destination and metaphor. The mugs are the entry point, but the real subject is what people do when they refuse to let a world vanish. Sometimes they archive it. Sometimes they collect it. Sometimes they build a bar around it and invite everyone else inside. Oddly enough, this is the second new Tiki-based documentary I’ve watched this year, and they were both fantastic for their own reasons. If you enjoyed this one, make sure to check out THE DONN OF TIKI as well, it explores more of the Tiki bar than the vessel itself.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
