RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Some physical media releases are about preserving great cinema. Others are about preserving a moment when it took chances, got weird, heavily synthesized, acted questionably, and somehow became immortal. MORTAL KOMBAT KOLLECTION belongs proudly to the second group. This Arrow Video release doesn’t make a case that both original live-action MORTAL KOMBAT films are secretly pure cinema waiting for critical reappraisal. It does something more useful. It treats them as objects of fan memory, genre history, studio ambition, arcade-era mythology, and pure 90s excess. On that level, this set is an absolute beast.<\/p>\n

\n

The first MORTAL KOMBAT remains one of the cleanest examples of a video game movie understanding what it is supposed to do. Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 film isn’t deep, subtle, or even complex, and trying to defend it on those terms is the wrong fight. It works because it moves like a game come alive after someone fed it too many quarters and plugged it into a rave. The plot is barely more than an excuse to gather recognizable fighters, place them on an island, and let them punch their way through mystical destiny, but that simplicity is a strength. The movie knows the names, the poses, the rivalries, the catchphrases, the tournament structure, and the appeal of watching familiar characters come to life as flesh-and-blood cartoons. And also, one of the best 90s soundtracks ever!<\/p>\n

That sounds easy to replicate, but the history of video game adaptations suggests otherwise. MORTAL KOMBAT arrived at a time when Hollywood often treated games as branding exercises rather than as franchise universes and fan expectations. Anderson’s film has plenty of limitations, but it doesn’t seem embarrassed by the material. It leans into the costumes, the arenas, the powers, the melodramatic stakes, and the ridiculous joy of hearing someone yell about souls and realms with total commitment. It may be goofy, but it’s rarely cynical.<\/p>\n

Robin Shou gives the first film enough martial-arts credibility and emotional grounding as Liu Kang to keep the tournament from becoming weightless. Bridgette Wilson-Sampras brings the right edge to Sonya Blade. At the same time, Linden Ashby steals huge chunks of the movie as Johnny Cage, playing him as both an arrogant movie star and a useful idiot. Christopher Lambert’s Raiden is an odd fit in the best possible way, floating through the film with a detachment that feels less like divine wisdom than a thunder god amusing himself. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, though, is the true finishing move. His Shang Tsung is all grimace, authority, and theatrical menace. He understands exactly how big this movie needs him to be.<\/p>\n

The fights vary in impact, but the best sequences land because they’re staged around character recognition as much as choreography. Johnny Cage versus Scorpion remains a highlight because it understands escalation. Liu Kang’s battles matter because they connect the hero’s grief to the larger stakes. The Goro effects have aged, but not in a way that ruins the fun. If anything, the practical presence gives the creature a tactile personality that modern effects would probably flatten. The CGI, meanwhile, is very much of its moment, but this is one of those cases where the aging is part of the texture.<\/p>\n

Then there’s MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION, a film that storms into the room, knocks over the furniture, screams at everyone, and dares the audience to ask why. It’s not a good movie in any traditional sense. It barely survives as a narrative. Characters appear because the game roster needs them. Dialogue lands with the force of a table read held during an earthquake. The recasting is distracting, the effects are rough, and the story seems convinced that “more” is a structure. More realms, more fighters, more transformations, more exposition, more portals, more shouting, more everything.<\/p>\n

And yet, as part of this collection, ANNIHILATION is essential. You literally can’t tell the story of 90s MORTAL KOMBAT on film without including the sequel’s catastrophic overreach. John R. Leonetti’s film is fascinating because it tries to expand the mythology so aggressively that it breaks the movie it's built around. Where the first film understands the arcade cabinet as a fighting tournament, the sequel treats the franchise like a fantasy encyclopedia being hurled at the screen page by page. It’s a mess, but it’s a historically revealing mess. It shows what happens when fan service, pressure, spectacle, and confidence collide without enough discipline to shape them.<\/p>\n

That’s why Arrow’s treatment matters. A cheap two-pack would have been easy. This release gives both films the kind of care usually reserved for movies with more traditional prestige, and that care reframes the experience. The new 4K restorations, Dolby Vision presentations, original surround and stereo audio options, commentaries, interviews, archival material, trailers, galleries, booklet, posters, and reversible sleeves turn the set into a celebration of context. It’s not just “here are the movies.” It’s “here is the phenomenon, the craft, the misfire, the afterlife, and the fan devotion that kept these films alive.”<\/p>\n

The extras are especially valuable because they let both films breathe as productions rather than punchlines. The first film benefits from a closer look at Anderson’s direction, Lawrence Kasanoff’s producing role, John R. Leonetti’s cinematography, Linden Ashby’s presence, and the design work behind characters like Goro. ANNIHILATION benefits even more from context because it’s the film most viewers have already judged, often fairly, as chaos. Hearing from Leonetti, Musetta Vander, George S. Clinton, and stunt performer J.J. Perry gives that chaos a production history and a human shape. It doesn’t magically make the sequel better, but it makes it more interesting to revisit.<\/p>\n

MORTAL KOMBAT is still as fun as it was in the 90s, a sturdy, highly rewatchable piece of mid-’90s action fantasy. ANNIHILATION plays as a spectacular warning label with moments of deranged entertainment value. Together, they represent the promise and danger of early video game cinema. The thrill of seeing characters brought to life, and the danger of mistaking a character select screen for a screenplay.<\/p>\n

The original remains a blast. The sequel remains deeply broken. Arrow’s release, though, gives both the showcase they deserve. For fans, collectors, physical media loyalists, and anyone who still feels their pulse jump when that theme kicks in, MORTAL KOMBAT KOLLECTION is a nearly flawless victory. It restores the good, preserves the bad, and honors the ridiculous glory of a franchise that never needed refinement to be unforgettable.<\/p>\n
