RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Hotel rooms can feel enormous to a kid, even when they barely have space for a bed, a chair, and a strip of carpet wide enough to become anything. There’s something otherworldly about the spaces. CAPTAIN MILO understands that contradiction from the start. Darcy Miller’s short drama doesn’t treat imagination as an accessory or a sentimental shortcut. It treats it as labor. Milo isn’t only playing because it’s fun. He’s playing because nobody else is there to help him organize the day, soften the silence, or keep the loneliness from getting too close.<\/p>\n

A 10-year-old boy is left alone in a hotel room while his mother is away, and the day stretches far beyond what a child should have to manage. Milo invents games, dances, disappears into comic-book adventures, and turns every object around him into a piece of some larger mission. The premise could have been pushed toward danger or even melodrama, but the idea it lands on is quieter and more unsettling. Milo isn’t abandoned; the wound comes from emotional absence, from a parent who may technically exist nearby in the world but isn’t present in the way a child needs.<\/p>\n

That differentiation gives CAPTAIN MILO its hunger. Miller is drawn to exploring emotions in children's lives, and this short seems built around the wisdom kids develop when they know too much about being alone. Milo isn’t helpless; he’s resourceful, imaginative, funny, physical, and capable of building worlds out of scraps. That makes the sadness land harder, because the film isn’t arguing that imagination fails him. It’s arguing that imagination gets overworked. A child’s fantasy life can be a shelter, a stage, a coping mechanism, and a warning sign all at once.<\/p>\n

Austin Thomas carries the short almost entirely through presence, which is a demanding assignment for any actor, let alone a young one. Milo can’t simply explain what he feels, and the film would collapse if he tried. His loneliness has to show up in the way play shifts, and in how fantasy stops feeling like release and starts to resemble pressure. Thomas gives Milo a recognizable childlike energy without turning him into just an avatar. He’s a boy trying to get through the hours by making himself into the hero, the sidekick, the villain, and the audience.<\/p>\n

The superhero element is especially intriguing because it lets the film tap into childhood fantasies without mocking them. A comic book or action figure can seem silly from an adult's perspective, but to a kid, it can hold an entire moral framework. Heroes don’t just fight. They return. They rescue. They know what to do. Milo’s attachment to that world says more than a long line of dialogue could, because it gives him a place where fear has rules and danger can be defeated. The tragedy is that real loneliness doesn’t follow those rules. It waits. It gets darker. It keeps the room the same size, no matter how far the imagination runs.<\/p>\n

Nathan Coltrane’s cinematography appears essential to that effect, framing the hotel space as both ordinary and unstable. The room can be a playground one moment and a trap the next, while the pool and the city-lit imagery give Milo’s day a dreamlike texture without taking away the recognizable sadness underneath. Louie Short’s sound and music also seem like a major part of the design. A story about a child alone in a hotel room lives or dies by what fills the quiet. Air conditioners, distant voices, the click of a phone, the sudden drama of music, and the private noises of play can all become emotional information. CAPTAIN MILO’s subject isn’t only what Milo imagines. It’s what he’s trying not to hear when the world pauses. Silence in a story like this isn’t empty. It’s the adult-shaped space around him.<\/p>\n

There’s a fine line between psychological drama and fantasy; pushing too far into the realm of imagination risks emotional neglect. Stay too realistic, and the film loses access to the way a child actually processes fear. CAPTAIN MILO appears to aim for that overlap, where the audience can feel how beautiful Milo’s imagination is while also recognizing that beauty is a survival response.<\/p>\n

CAPTAIN MILO isn’t only about a kid being left alone. It’s about the private bargains children make with themselves when adults fail them in quiet, deniable ways. Milo’s imagination isn’t treated as childish. It’s treated as evidence of how hard he’s working to stay intact. The title may sound like a superhero adventure, but the real mission is much smaller and more devastating. A boy has to survive the day inside his own head.<\/p>\n

CAPTAIN MILO is an emotionally focused short with a strong sense of purpose, and it handles a difficult subject from a child’s perspective rather than as an adult lecture. Its power comes from recognizing that neglect doesn’t always show up with shouting, bruises, or obvious catastrophe. Sometimes it looks like a kid in a hotel room, trying to make the hours pass by. Sometimes it looks like play that keeps going because stopping would mean admitting no one is coming through the door.<\/p>\n
