The short takes us into a house already marked by absence, where Zoya is sorting through the emotional aftermath of her mother’s death. Her grief isn’t presented as some grand breakdown. It’s in the air, in the quiet, in the sense that this place still belongs to someone who isn’t there anymore. Then Amelia arrives at the door with a story about an Airbnb mix-up, and the film turns the familiar into a trap. Zoya doesn’t invite disaster in because she’s foolish. She does it because most decent people have been trained to apologize for someone else’s inconvenience.

That’s the hook that writer/director Maya Gray understands so well. ANIMALS. It isn’t built around a far-fetched home invasion in the usual sense of the genre. Amelia doesn’t burst through the door with a weapon. She arrives with confusion, need, and enough helplessness to make refusing her feel cruel. The terror comes from watching someone weaponize politeness, then push one boundary after another until that act of kindness has been twisted into surrender. Gray keeps the scale intimate, which makes the situation more maddening. Zoya can see what’s happening. We can see what’s happening. The horror is that knowing the truth doesn’t give her power over it.

Serine Sianosian plays Zoya with a guarded sadness that never feels ornamental. She’s grieving, irritated, suspicious, embarrassed by her own suspicion, and, eventually, furious at being cornered in her own home. Sianosian’s performance makes her choices believable because Zoya isn’t naive so much as exhausted. She doesn’t have the energy to turn every encounter into a fight, and Amelia senses that. Rachel Alig, as Amelia, gives her portrayal an unnerving texture. She doesn’t play the character as a standard feeling intruder. Amelia’s menace comes through in delayed reactions, pauses, bursts of entitlement, and an almost childish relationship to other people’s space.

When the legal and social systems around Zoya prove useless, ANIMALS. shifts from domestic thriller into something more bitter. The police officer’s inability to solve the situation isn’t treated like a twist. It’s treated like a procedure, which is far more upsetting. The film knows that institutions often move slowly, especially when the person harming understands which words will buy them time.

Gray’s social commentary, woven into the bones of the film, gives it more bite than its surface setup suggests. The story forms a personal nightmare. But it’s also a broader story about domination, dehumanization, and the way people learn to keep moving while someone else is being erased. That could have become heavy-handed in a longer lecture-driven version, but ANIMALS. keeps it tied to behavior. Amelia consumes and manipulates. The house becomes a system in which power is first taken through access, then through comfort, and finally through ownership.

Geneva Cimone, Peter Kalisch, and Jamie Criss help us see the world beyond the two-woman standoff, especially once it reveals how easily discomfort can be smoothed over to avoid confrontation. Those scenes land because they’re recognizable. People see something wrong, sense the ugliness beneath it, and choose the path that lets the evening continue.

ANIMALS. understands the emotion of a home that no longer feels safe. Olugbenga Osikomaiya’s cinematography keeps the space suffocating without making it feel unnaturally cramped. The rooms are never comforting. The house is full of memories, clutter, and ownership, which makes Amelia’s growing ease in it feel like contamination. The camera notices bodies too close together, doorways that no longer feel protective, and the humiliation of watching a stranger behave as if your private space has already become theirs.

The title does more than label a single villain or a single victim. ANIMALS. points toward the ways people are diminished, and the ways people reduce themselves when empathy becomes optional. Amelia’s cruelty is obvious, but the film’s accusation rests with everyone who accepts the situation as unpleasant rather than intolerable. Zoya’s suffering becomes easier for others to process once it can be treated as an awkward circumstance, a dispute, or something to move past. For a 22-minute film, ANIMALS. feels complete. It has the kind of premise that could be stretched into a feature, and there’s enough material here to support one, but the short format gives it a blunt force. It pushes in, takes space, and leaves behind the awful feeling that Zoya’s mistake wasn’t opening the door. Her mistake was assuming that kindness would be recognized as such by someone who saw only an opening.

ANIMALS. is a tense, controlled, and deeply infuriating psychological thriller in the best sense possible. Gray turns hospitality into a battleground, grief into vulnerability, and avoidance into complicity. With strong lead performances from Sianosian and Alig, a command of space, and an emotional sting that lingers, this is the kind of short that proves horror doesn’t need scale to get under your skin. Sometimes all it needs is a stranger at the door and a host too human to turn her away.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
