RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>COVERT AFFAIRS belongs to a very specific USA Network era, back when cable dramas could run on charm, stunning settings, case-of-the-week plotting, and a lead actor strong enough to smooth over a lot of convenient writing. That isn’t an insult. For viewers who miss that version of television, the series can feel like a time capsule from a period when shows didn’t need to be grim and mythology-heavy from the first episode. They could simply give you a capable protagonist, a steady supporting cast, a few secrets, and enough danger to keep the next hour moving.<\/p>\n

The series follows Annie Walker, played by Piper Perabo, a CIA trainee pulled into fieldwork earlier than expected. She’s smart, eager, and clearly positioned as someone whose talent makes her valuable before experience catches up with her. Her guide into the Agency’s deeper corners is Auggie Anderson, played by Christopher Gorham, a military intelligence operative whose friendship with Annie becomes one of the show’s most dependable connections. Around them, Joan Campbell and Arthur Campbell, played by Kari Matchett and Peter Gallagher, add tension, politics, and strain inside the CIA’s leadership structure.<\/p>\n

Annie isn’t introduced as a jaded spy who already knows how to survive every situation. She’s learning in motion, which allows the series to treat danger as both exciting and instructive. Early episodes especially lean hard on that new-agent angle, sometimes to a fault, because Annie can feel less like a trained operative and more like someone the show keeps tossing into impossible circumstances who just happens to have an edge. Perabo’s performance helps sell it. She gives Annie enough curiosity and stubbornness to make the character watchable, even when the plotting asks the audience to accept more than it should.<\/p>\n

The show is extremely watchable without being especially daring. COVERT AFFAIRS knows how to stage a mission, build suspense, navigate the line between personal and professional complications, and end an episode with enough forward momentum to keep someone watching. The result is a series that’s easy to binge and just as easy to forget for stretches at a time. It’s pleasant, sometimes exciting, emotionally satisfying, and often too comfortable with being merely fine.<\/p>\n

Gorham brings warmth, humor, and intelligence to a role that could’ve been reduced to tech support with a backstory. His rapport with Perabo gives the series a steadier feel than many of the missions themselves. Their scenes often work because the actors find a relaxed togetherness, whether they’re trading mission details, teasing each other, or drifting into more complicated territory. The show doesn’t always know how best to use that chemistry, but it knows enough to keep returning to it.<\/p>\n

Kari Matchett is particularly valuable as Joan because she conveys authority without reducing the character to a supervisor stereotype. Peter Gallagher gives Arthur a believable mix of command and self-interest, and the Campbell marriage adds a layer of personal cost to the institutional drama. Sendhil Ramamurthy’s Jai Wilcox, Gregory Itzin’s Henry Wilcox, and later characters who join in, like Hill Harper’s Calder Michaels and Nic Bishop’s Ryan McQuaid, help the series broaden the power struggles, even when those arcs vary in impact.<\/p>\n

As a spy drama, COVERT AFFAIRS often favors accessibility over credibility. Annie travels, infiltrates, fights, negotiates, and survives with the kind of convenience that belongs more to television than real-world intelligence work. The show can be fun when it embraces that, especially when it leans into undercover identities and mission mechanics. It becomes weaker when it wants the audience to take its CIA mythology more seriously than the writing supports.<\/p>\n

The five-season length does allow Annie to evolve. She becomes more guarded, more capable, and more aware of how much damage the job can cause. That progression is one of the better reasons to revisit the entire series rather than sampling a few early episodes and moving on. The first season has a lighter, almost breezy entry-level quality, while later seasons push Annie into darker choices and more personal fallout. Annie doesn’t stay frozen in the same version of herself, and Perabo adjusts her performance as the character becomes less wide-eyed and more tactical.<\/p>\n

As a complete series, COVERT AFFAIRS benefits from the comfort of its structure. A lot of shows from this period were built for weekly viewing, with enough episodic structure to satisfy casual viewers and enough ongoing story to reward loyalty. That makes the Blu-ray release appealing for physical media collectors who want the whole run in one place. You can watch a few episodes, step away, and return without feeling punished.<\/p>\n

The cancellation after Season 5 leaves the complete run in a slightly awkward place. The show had enough time to develop Annie, Auggie, Joan, Arthur, and the larger CIA world, but it didn’t receive the kind of final stretch that makes a complete-series set feel wrapped up. That doesn’t ruin the experience, though it does leave a little frustration hanging over the final episodes. For anyone revisiting the series now, it helps to approach COVERT AFFAIRS as a long-running cable spy drama rather than a perfectly resolved saga.<\/p>\n
