RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Action movies set against real-world conflict have to walk a narrow line. Push too far into exhibition, and the pain becomes decoration. Push too far into seriousness, and the movie can start acting embarrassed by the genre it belongs to. MAN OF WAR doesn’t always avoid those, but it does understand that every firefight needs something human underneath it. William Kaufman constructs the film as a tactical rescue thriller, then keeps trying to drag the violence back toward people who can’t simply walk away from the battlefield.<\/p>\n

LaMonica Garrett stars as Michael Connor, an elite American Special Forces veteran operating in Ukraine during Russia’s invasion. He’s already carrying the exhaustion of a man who’s lived too many lives around violence, and the mission becomes personal when his adopted daughter, Riley, played by Rosmary Yaneva, is taken by Russian mercenaries. A damaged fighter goes into hostile territory to rescue someone he loves, gathering allies and enemies along the way as the landscape becomes more dangerous with every mile.<\/p>\n

The reason MAN OF WAR works better than a generic rescue thriller is Garrett. He has the size, physical command, and tactical believability the role needs, but he doesn’t play Connor as a human weapon. Garrett’s best moments often come when he’s quiet, scanning a room, absorbing bad news, or trying not to let panic make decisions for him. There’s a restrained quality to his performance that helps the film. Connor can handle himself, of course, but Garrett makes him look tired of needing to prove that.<\/p>\n

The shootouts are meant to feel rather than be graceful, rough terrain, and a sense that every corner could turn into a kill zone. The film was shot in and around Sofia, Bulgaria, with city streets and surrounding countryside standing in for parts of Ukraine, giving the movie an appropriately worn, cold, battered texture. The production doesn’t look enormous, but it often looks resourceful, especially when Kaufman gets his actors, stunt performers, vehicles, and effects moving through the same hostile space.<\/p>\n

The action is strongest when it feels procedural. Characters reload, reposition, clear rooms, cover exits, and move like people who understand how quickly mistakes get punished. That’s where Kaufman’s instincts serve him best. He’s less interested in superhero posturing than in bodies under pressure, and the movie has a blunt physicality that gives the combat scenes some credibility. The gunfights have impact because they don’t feel weightless, and the better sequences make the viewer aware of distance, exposure, and survival rather than just muzzle flashes.<\/p>\n

Andrew Howard gives MAN OF WAR its most interesting supporting performance as Dany, a Ukrainian ex-CIA asset and black-market operator whose connection to the conflict gives the story a different emotional charge. Howard can play danger and desperation in the same look, and his scenes with Garrett explore their relationship that doesn’t need heavy explanation to register. These are men who understand usefulness, loyalty, compromise, and the price of getting one more person out alive.<\/p>\n

Linds Edwards also makes a strong impression as Bunny, a rough-edged mercenary presence who brings personality without tipping the movie too far into comedy. In a film this grim, that matters a lot. Bunny is entertaining because he feels unpredictable, not because the movie asks him to become the sidekick. Daniel Bernhardt, as Koniev, gives the villain side a cold physical menace. Bernhardt has built a long career on knowing how to use movement, stillness, and threat, and MAN OF WAR uses that reputation well enough to make his appearances feel dangerous before the violence even starts.<\/p>\n

Rosmary Yaneva’s Riley is integral to the film, though the script doesn’t always give her as much agency as it could. She’s the reason Connor enters the worst of the conflict, and Yaneva brings enough toughness to keep Riley from feeling like a simple rescue target. The movie would be stronger if it spent more time on her perspective, especially since the war setting lends her situation greater gravity than a standard kidnapping plot. MAN OF WAR knows Riley matters to Connor. It could have done more to make her matter as her own person.<\/p>\n

That’s the film’s most noticeable limitation. It has the bones of a rough, sincere action drama, but some of the writing leans on familiar shortcuts. Russian mercenaries are drawn with generic villainy, the mission structure hits the expected moments that viewers will recognize, and a few lines exist mostly to push everyone toward the next stage of violence. When MAN OF WAR trusts silence, exhaustion, and tactical behavior, it feels more convincing. When it explains itself too much, the material becomes more mid.<\/p>\n

There’s also the unavoidable issue of using the war in Ukraine as the backdrop for an American-led action story. MAN OF WAR is at its best when it allows Ukrainian characters, refugees, civilians, and local fear to remain part of the frame rather than treating the setting as an interchangeable war zone. The film does make room for that pain, and Kaufman’s approach seems earnest. The story, however, remains shaped around Connor’s mission, so the broader conflict is often filtered through his rescue arc. That choice keeps the movie focused and commercially accessible, though it also limits how deeply it can engage with the reality it borrows from.<\/p>\n

MAN OF WAR won’t convert viewers who dislike military rescue thrillers. It’s grim, violent, and built around a familiar emotion. For fans of tactical action, though, there’s plenty here to appreciate. The movie has a lead who belongs in this kind of role, a director who knows how to make gunfire feel punishing, and a supporting cast that gives the mission enough personality.<\/p>\n

The film lands as a sturdy, bruising piece of independent action filmmaking. It’s not as emotionally layered as it wants to be, and its real-world setting raises expectations the script can’t always meet. MAN OF WAR delivers where it counts most. It’s tense, physical, and anchored by LaMonica Garrett’s commanding presence. Kaufman gives him a battlefield, a personal mission, and enough chaos to prove he can carry the whole thing across the finish line.<\/p>\n
