RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>SON OF THE SOIL storms in with fists in the air, gunfire, grief, dust, blood, and the kind of revenge-movie momentum that rarely leaves room for anyone to sit with their pain before the next body drops. Chee Keong Cheung’s Lagos-set action thriller is rough and blunt, with a deep familiarity, but it has enough physical force and visual personality to stand apart from a routine vengeance story. This is a film that often works better as an impact piece than as drama, and there’s value in knowing the difference.<\/p>\n

Razaaq Adoti stars as Zion Ladejo, a former Nigerian soldier whose life has been shaped by violence long before the film begins. After his sister Ronke is killed, Zion returns to Nigeria and begins carving a path through Lagos’ criminal underworld, following the trail toward Dr. Baptiste, a drug kingpin connected to a dangerous synthetic drug called Matrix. The setup is direct, almost aggressively so.<\/p>\n

SON OF THE SOIL understands the pleasures of old-school revenge cinema, where moral ambiguity often gets pushed aside once the hero has a reason to start breaking bones. It doesn’t waste much time pretending Zion will work through grief in any healthy way. His sorrow becomes fuel, and the film treats every fight as another step toward the person he believes deserves the blame.<\/p>\n

This isn’t a generic urban playground dressed up for action. The city feels crowded, unstable, textured, and alive, with markets, streets, alleys, and public spaces pressing against the frame. The production’s use of real locations gives the movie an energy that studio action often lacks. People move in and out of the background. The environment feels difficult to control. Lagos doesn’t look like a backdrop. It looks like a place the movie has to fight its way through.<\/p>\n

Cheung directs with constant movement, leaning into the necessity of handhelds, fast edits, and a visual restlessness that refuses to let the frame settle for long. At its best, that approach puts the audience inside Zion’s battered forward motion. The fights feel dirty and punishing. The violence isn’t elegant. It’s bodies slamming into walls, weapons landing hard, people staggering through pain, and characters surviving less through brilliance than stubbornness.<\/p>\n

SON OF THE SOIL sometimes films emotional scenes with the same agitation it brings to action sequences, which means grief and reflection don’t always get the space they need. Zion is supposed to be carrying personal pain, but the film is usually more comfortable showing what that pain does to other people’s bodies than to his own spirit. There are hints of a deeper story about displacement, homecoming, and identity, but the movie keeps pushing past them to get to the next confrontation.<\/p>\n

Zion’s outsider-insider status becomes another layer of texture rather than the emotional core. Adoti brings obvious physical commitment to the role, and he throws himself into Zion’s punishment with conviction. He’s believable as a man who will keep standing up after he should stay down. The performance is less persuasive in the quieter dramatic passages, where the script calls for emotional history but often offers direct statements rather than lived-in complexity.<\/p>\n

Patience Ozokwor gives the film some needed depth as Zion’s mother, grounding her scenes with the weary authority of someone who has already lost too much. Iretiola Doyle, Damilola Ogunsi, Taye Arimoro, Philip Asaya, and the rest of the supporting cast add flashes of personality around Zion’s single-minded mission. Arimoro, in particular, brings an unpredictability to Saka Bula, giving the film a villainous energy that feels more colorful than the broader crime mechanics surrounding him.<\/p>\n

Dr. Baptiste, played by Philip Asaya, should be the story’s defining source of dread, but the character works better as a symbol of corruption than as a fully realized antagonist. He represents poison moving through the community, the fusion of medical and criminal cruelty, and the idea that violence in the streets often has cleaner hands profiting from it somewhere above.<\/p>\n

Where SON OF THE SOIL struggles most is in the writing between the action beats. Some dialogue and exposition tend to arrive in blocks rather than through behavior. The revenge structure is so familiar that the film needs either sharper character work or more surprising thematic development to elevate it beyond the expected. It has ambition, and that ambition is visible on the screen, but ambition alone can’t fill every gap.<\/p>\n

Still, something is exciting about the scale of the swing. SON OF THE SOIL wants to be a Nigerian action thriller with international genre instincts and a local heartbeat. It doesn’t always balance those elements, but the attempt matters. The film’s flaws are noticeable, yet they’re tied to a project reaching for something larger than a bare-bones revenge programmer. The grit, the location work, the physicality, and the cultural tension all give it more personality than its most familiar plot turns might suggest.<\/p>\n

SON OF THE SOIL isn’t the reinvention of the revenge thriller, but it’s a solid, aggressive entry with enough swagger to make its weaknesses easier to forgive. The emotional soil could’ve been richer, the villains sharper, and Zion’s relationship to home explored more. Even so, when the movie locks in, it has a blunt, bruising power. It’s messy, loud, and overextended in places, but it leaves marks. For action fans looking for a Lagos-set revenge story with grit under its nails, that may be enough.<\/p>\n
