I hadn’t watched the first 11 seasons, nor even read about the series. A twelfth season of a mystery show is less a test of surprise than of trust. By this point, audiences know the roads, the faces, the tone, and the mathematical impossibility of one small town producing this many corpses without every resident moving somewhere safer. THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES: SERIES 12 understands that and leans into it with the confidence of a show that no longer has to introduce itself.

That could’ve been a problem. Long-running crime shows often build comfort through accumulated familiarity, and coming in this late can feel like walking into a local diner where everyone else knows the menu, the staff, and the jokes from ten years ago. SERIES 12 doesn’t completely erase that feeling, but it does something more useful. It makes it easy to catch up. The relationships have history without becoming inaccessible, and the cases are built with enough standalone structure that a new viewer can settle in without feeling punished for missing the earlier chapters.

Mike Shepherd has patience, dry humor, and an instinct for letting people talk long enough to reveal more than they intended. Even without the backstory, Neill Rea makes Mike immediately relatable. He’s not flashy, not tortured in an overplayed prestige-drama way, and not written as a genius who needs everyone else to marvel at him. His calm works because it’s practical. He studies people, gives silence room to do its damage, and moves through the absurdity of Brokenwood’s murder rate as if this is simply what the job requires.

Kristin Sims, played by Fern Sutherland, gives the show a sharper procedural feeling. She’s often the one keeping the investigations from drifting too far into Mike’s relaxed style, and that balance helps a newcomer quickly understand the team dynamic. Jarod Rawiri’s Daniel Chalmers brings a different approach, adding curiosity and movement without disrupting the show’s dry comic take. Cristina Ionda’s Dr. Gina Kadinsky is the kind of character I could tell had become a fan favorite long before this season, but she still worked for me right away. Her bluntness, timing, and certainty give the morgue scenes a personality that most crime shows would explore through exposition.

The appeal of THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES is a little stranger than the usual cozy crime label suggests. It’s warm without being soft, funny without begging for laughs, and macabre without pretending to be grim prestige television. Series 12 keeps that balance intact across six feature-length cases that range from UFO alarm and crop-circle paranoia to a surfing priest’s troubled past, a deadly masquerade, a vintage train murder, a killer ukulele, and a family heirloom case that pulls Ray and Trudy Neilson into dangerous territory.

That list sounds ridiculous when placed side by side, which is part of why the series seems to work. Brokenwood doesn’t treat eccentricity as decoration. The town’s hobbies, festivals, clubs, rivalries, legends, and local grudges are the delivery system for motive. A case can begin with something absurd, then settle into recognizable human weaknesses. Jealousy, embarrassment, money, reputation, old resentments, and secrets that curdled because nobody dared to speak years earlier.

The 90-minute format gives the cases room to breathe, but it also exposes the occasional looseness. Some investigations take a few extra bends before reaching the reveal, and not every red herring lands with the same force. A couple of installments flirt with novelty so openly that the setup threatens to become more memorable than the emotion beneath it. That didn’t derail the season for me, but it did remind me that comfort television can sometimes confuse patience with padding.

I didn’t need eleven prior seasons to understand the joke of Brokenwood as a scenic, welcoming, deeply unsafe place to live. The series gets a lot of mileage from that contradiction. It looks like a community built for local markets, friendly gossip, and weekend events, yet nearly every gathering seems one bad conversation away from a body count. Death interrupts the postcard, and everyone reacts with a mix of horror, curiosity, and the resigned familiarity of people who should really be asking harder questions about the local statistics.

It doesn’t stop to explain every relationship or overwork itself to welcome newcomers. Still, it gives enough through behavior, tone, and performance that the history can be felt rather than recited. I didn’t always know the full context behind every glance or recurring local, though I rarely felt locked out. Instead, there was a sense of stepping into a town already in motion, which may be the best way to encounter Brokenwood anyway.

The frequent MIDSOMER MURDERS comparison makes sense from a marketing standpoint, since both shows turn charming communities into statistically absurd murder zones. THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES has its own flavor, though. Its humor is drier, its characters less theatrical, and its sense of place more relaxed. Series 12 doesn’t chase after reinvention because reinvention would be a betrayal. The show’s durability seems to come from refinement, not upheaval.

I can’t measure Series 12 against the full history of THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES. I can only judge how well it works from the outside looking in, and on that level, it’s surprisingly inviting. The cast has warmth, the mysteries are solid, the humor stays grounded, and the setting gives the show a personality that doesn’t feel interchangeable with every other cozy crime series.

By the end of these six cases, I understood why viewers keep returning. THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES: SERIES 12 offers murder as comfort viewing without making it too easy to digest. It has a few loose ends, and the formula occasionally shows its seams, but the tone, cast, and setting carry it through. Twelve seasons in, Brokenwood is still a terrible place to live and a very easy place to revisit, even for someone who showed up late.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
