RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>A good Agatha Christie mystery doesn’t need to jump from one idea to the next to feel dangerous. It needs suspicion in the walls, politeness with a pulse beneath it, and enough side-eye to make everyone look guilty for at least a moment. MURDER IS EASY has all the pieces for that kind of story, and sometimes it pulls them all together beautifully. The trouble is that the case itself never becomes as gripping as the world around it.<\/p>\n

\n

This two-part adaptation opens with Luke Fitzwilliam, newly arrived in England, meeting Miss Pinkerton on a train to London. She tells him a killer is operating in the village of Wychwood under Ashe, where a string of deaths has been accepted as accident, illness, or misfortune. Luke doesn’t quite know what to make of her warning until Miss Pinkerton herself is found dead before she can reach Scotland Yard. Curiosity turns into responsibility, and soon Luke is in Wychwood trying to prove that something rotten is hiding beneath the village’s well-manicured surface.<\/p>\n

David Jonsson is the reason this version works as well as it does. His portrayal of Luke Fitzwilliam is observant without becoming smug, elegant without feeling remote, and uncertain enough to keep the investigation from turning into a victory lap. Jonsson gives him an intelligence that fits the character’s outsider position. He’s not simply solving a puzzle; he’s reading a room that doesn’t want to be read.<\/p>\n

When MURDER IS EASY leans into the deeper thoughts, it becomes more than another period whodunit. Luke’s presence exposes what the village takes for granted. People speak to him with practiced civility, suspicion, fascination, condescension, or outright hostility, often in the same scene. The show’s interest in post-war English society gives the murder mystery tension, and Meenu Gaur brings a polished, slightly heightened visual style to Wychwood that keeps the village from feeling sleepy. The colors are rich, the rooms are carefully arranged, and the faces are often framed as if they’re hiding something, even before the script confirms it.<\/p>\n

Penelope Wilton leaves a strong early impression as Miss Pinkerton, giving the story the right spark of urgency before disappearing. It’s a small but important role, and Wilton plays her less like a harmless older woman with a theory and more like someone who has spent too long being dismissed. Morfydd Clark’s Bridget Conway brings a different feeling, caught between attraction, self-preservation, and unease. Clark gives Bridget enough life to avoid becoming only Luke’s guide through the village, even when the script occasionally nudges her toward that.<\/p>\n

Tom Riley’s Lord Whitfield has the smooth entitlement needed for the village’s power structure. Douglas Henshall, Mathew Baynton, Mark Bonnar, Sinéad Matthews, Nimra Bucha, Tamzin Outhwaite, Jon Pointing, and Phoebe Licorish all add to what makes Wychwood breathe, though not everyone gets the same level of depth. The show often introduces people with enough to be memorable, but doesn’t always give them enough dramatic weight for their secrets to land.<\/p>\n

That’s where the adaptation starts to lose ground. The atmosphere is often stronger than the investigation. MURDER IS EASY has mood, elegance, and a promising framework, but the mystery can feel oddly soft in the middle. The deaths should create a mounting sense of dread, especially in a small village where people keep insisting nothing unusual is happening. Instead, the threat sometimes feels more conceptual. The show tells us Wychwood is dangerous, and the premise supports that, but the tension doesn’t always tighten from scene to scene.<\/p>\n

The romance between Luke and Bridget is one of the more uneven elements. Jonsson and Clark have enough presence to make the pairing watchable, and the relationship gives Luke more reason to stay tangled in Wychwood’s affairs. The issue is that the emotion occasionally pulls attention away from the murders without deepening the case as much as it should. Christie adaptations can survive a romantic subplot, but this one sometimes feels like it’s borrowing tension that the investigation hasn’t generated on its own.<\/p>\n

Gaur’s direction gives the adaptation a distinct look, Jonsson is a terrific lead, and the decision to place Luke within the racial and class tensions of 1950s England gives this version a reason to exist beyond brand recognition. It’s also refreshing to see a Christie adaptation willing to reconsider the world surrounding the murder rather than treating the village as decorative.<\/p>\n

MURDER IS EASY is at its best when it lets discomfort creep through civility. A smile held too long, a room that goes still when Luke enters, a powerful man used to being indulged, a community that can explain away death because explanation is easier than disruption; those are the details that stick. The series understands that murder can be easy when people are trained not to notice who benefits from silence.<\/p>\n

MURDER IS EASY isn’t the best modern Christie adaptation, but it’s far from empty. It’s sincere and compelling, with a lead performance better than the series it surrounds. The murder may not feel as easy as the title promises. The reason to keep watching is clear enough: David Jonsson walks into Wychwood, raises an eyebrow, and gives this uneven mystery the confidence it needs to survive its weaker turns.<\/p>\n
