RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Some horror films present themselves with blood, shadows, or something waiting in the corner of the frame. GODHEAD takes a more vexatious route, in the best and most uncomfortable sense. It gets under the skin through certainty. Not true. Not faith. Certainty. The kind that makes people stare a little too long, speak with a little too much confidence, and turn ordinary rooms into places where logic starts slipping loose from the walls.<\/p>\n

Mark H. Rapaport’s sophomore feature is a strange, emaciated, black-and-white religious nightmare about eccentric twins who believe themselves to be prophets. Their conviction pulls a priest into their supposedly divine mission, and from there the film becomes less about whether they’re right than about how belief can warp everything around it. GODHEAD isn’t interested in answers or the separation between delusion and revelation. It keeps both close enough together that the audience has to sit in that overlap, where fanaticism can look like purpose if someone says it with enough force.<\/p>\n

The film’s black-and-white photography gives the whole thing a boxed-in quality. William Tracy Babcock’s images don’t make GODHEAD look old; they make it feel judged. Faces become landscapes of suspicion. Rooms feel off before anything obviously goes wrong. The angles and exaggerated compositions could’ve tipped into empty affectation, but they work because Rapaport ties the visual distortion to the characters’ internal disorder. The world doesn’t bend because the film wants to show off. It bends because these people have already bent it in their minds.<\/p>\n

Sarah Coffey and Kimball Farley carry much of that instability as the twins. Their performances are theatrical without feeling careless, odd without becoming random. That distinction matters. The easiest version of this movie would’ve been two performers acting weird at full volume while everyone else reacted. GODHEAD is more controlled than that. Coffey and Farley give the twins a shared language of glances and posture. They’re funny at times, frightening at others, and often both in the same breath. Their belief has a childlike quality, but not an innocent one. It’s the kind of innocence that has been left alone too long and has started inventing laws for everyone else.<\/p>\n

Al Warren serves as a useful counterweight, the priest, because he doesn’t play the role of a simple man of faith dropped into madness. There’s weariness in him, and that keeps the character from becoming a prop in the twins’ story. His presence gives GODHEAD its moral friction. A priest is supposed to recognize devotion, but what happens when devotion arrives in a shape that feels diseased? The film keeps returning to that question, and Warren lets the uncertainty show without overexplaining it.<\/p>\n

GODHEAD is a darker, more claustrophobic, and more severe experience. It feels less like an oddball comedy curdling into tragedy and more like a sermon delivered from a locked basement. The humor is there, but it’s dry and misshapen. It arrives in the wrong places, which is why it works. Rapaport understands that fanaticism can be ridiculous right up until the moment it becomes dangerous.<\/p>\n

That said, the film’s commitment to its own strangeness will also be the dividing line. GODHEAD can be opaque, and there are moments where its symbolic gestures feel more compelling than its narrative movement. The film is strongest when the twins, the priest, and the atmosphere are pressing against each other in real time. It’s less when it leans too heavily on mood, leaving the emotional stakes slightly blurred. For a film about belief-consuming people, there are stretches where the ideas are sharper than the human ache beneath them. One of the challenges I faced was with a few visuals. While I’m assuming they were meant to be symbolic, I personally would have found the film more powerful had it played entirely within the grounded rules of reality.<\/p>\n

GODHEAD has a real identity, plenty of films chase weirdness without understanding how to shape it. Rapaport does. He builds this like a cracked religious obsession, something perfect in places, jagged in others, and difficult to hold without cutting yourself. The film’s references may hover around old Hollywood, religious noir, and Lynchian unreality. It feels like a filmmaker continuing to test how far his own instincts can go before they snap.<\/p>\n

GODHEAD feels right at home, and the audience who loves it will absolutely be there 100%. It’s strange, confrontational, occasionally funny, frequently uncomfortable, and clearly designed for those willing to meet it on its own crooked terms. It may not convert someone, but conversion isn’t really the point. The film is about the terror of people who are already converted, already convinced, already past the point where ordinary doubt can save them.<\/p>\n
