Stan’s naive confusion, Ollie’s wounded dignity, and their shared ability to turn a minor problem into a spectacular disaster were all firmly in place. LAUREL & HARDY: THE SILENT YEARS gathers nine shorts made as Hollywood was shifting toward sound, capturing the duo at the end of one era without suggesting they needed to change much for the next.

Eureka Entertainment’s LAUREL & HARDY: THE SILENT YEARS (1929) preserves that look and everything surrounding it at a crucial point in the duo’s development. The two-disc set collects nine shorts from the year Hollywood’s commitment to recorded dialogue was becoming impossible to ignore. Laurel and Hardy had already established their characters, movements, reactions, and destructive friendship, but the technology around them was changing faster than the industry could keep up with.

This isn’t a collection in which every frame looks untouched by time. The restoration work draws from surviving materials that vary considerably in quality, including 35mm elements, 16mm copies, and occasional fragments from smaller formats. Sharpness changes, damage remains visible, and a few shots look noticeably rougher than the material surrounding them. Those shifts aren’t evidence of careless presentation. They show how close parts of this work came to disappearing forever.

The strongest surviving elements reveal an impressive amount of detail, physical texture, and background activity. Others are softer or marked by decomposition that no digital repair could completely reverse (thankfully, there was no AI intervention here to try and add what wasn’t there). Watching the quality fluctuate serves as a reminder that film restoration can’t replace history; it can only rescue what history has left behind.

BIG BUSINESS is, without a doubt, the high point of the collection, and its construction is almost absurdly straightforward. Stan and Ollie are selling Christmas trees door-to-door when a disagreement with a homeowner, played by James Finlayson, escalates into a methodical exchange of property destruction. A tree is damaged, a doorway is cut apart, clothing is torn, a car is dismantled, and a house gradually loses its reason for existing.

The sequence isn’t driven by uncontrolled anger. Each participant calmly watches the others complete their retaliation before deciding what to destroy next. Their patience makes the violence funnier. Revenge becomes a formal procedure, and the pauses between attacks allow every loss to register before the next one begins.

Finlayson is essential to that. His fury and immediate willingness to escalate make him neither a helpless victim nor an ordinary antagonist. He can match Laurel and Hardy’s physical commitment, which keeps the feud in balance even as the damage becomes ridiculous. His reactions also give the duo something to push against, proving how much their comedy benefits from an opponent who can fight back.

LIBERTY places Stan and Ollie in greater physical danger without changing their priorities. After escaping from prison, they accidentally put on each other’s trousers and spend much of the short searching for enough privacy to exchange them. That problem eventually follows them onto the unfinished building's framework, where the need to switch pants somehow remains more urgent than the possibility of falling to their deaths.

The comedy works because the danger grows from the original mistake. Stan and Ollie don’t suddenly climb the building because the film needs a larger ending. Their repeated failures to solve a simple wardrobe malfunction led them there. A crab hidden inside the clothing adds another complication, allowing discomfort, embarrassment, and vertigo to operate simultaneously.

An equally foolish misunderstanding powers WRONG AGAIN. The pair hears that a reward has been offered for the return of “Blue Boy” and assumes the announcement concerns a horse rather than a valuable painting. Their attempt to deliver the animal to a wealthy man eventually results in the horse being placed on top of a piano, an unforgettable image supported by a surprisingly logical chain of mistakes.

That logic matters throughout the better shorts. Laurel and Hardy can arrive at a completely irrational result, but the audience usually understands every wrong turn that brought them there. Stan follows instructions without recognizing their meaning. Ollie supplies confidence without improving their accuracy. Together, they make nonsense feel inevitable.

THAT’S MY WIFE uses a more elaborate setup. Ollie risks losing an inheritance after his wife leaves, forcing Stan to dress as Mrs. Hardy and accompany him to a nightclub. The disguise reflects the period in which it was made, though Laurel’s performance extends beyond the sight of him wearing a dress. His movements, attempts at refinement, and irritated adjustments give the masquerade its personality.

The short becomes less convincing when stolen jewelry is introduced to force Stan and Ollie into compromising positions. That section requires a plot mechanism more complicated than the joke merits. Their discomfort at dinner and Stan’s strained attempt to behave like Ollie’s wife are already funny enough without the extra criminal business.

That unevenness appears more frequently after Leo McCarey departs from the Hal Roach studio. DOUBLE WHOOPEE has an excellent setting and several memorable bits, placing Stan and Ollie inside an expensive hotel where they’re briefly mistaken for visiting dignitaries before being assigned menial jobs. An unsafe elevator, a taxi whistle, torn uniforms, and a brief appearance by Jean Harlow give the short plenty of life.

BACON GRABBERS restores a stronger sense of purpose by making the pair responsible for repossessing a radio from a hostile homeowner. Giving them authority is funny before they arrive at the house because neither man appears capable of enforcing anything. Edgar Kennedy provides the resistance, responding to their efforts with the anger of someone who understands that incompetence has somehow acquired legal backing.

A goat becomes the source of trouble in ANGORA LOVE, the last genuinely silent Laurel and Hardy short included here. The animal follows them home, where they attempt to hide it from an increasingly suspicious landlord. The smell, noise, and the cramped boarding-house setting gradually remove any chance of secrecy.

The outdoor portions have an energy and freedom that early sound equipment would soon make harder to achieve. Once the action moves inside, the comedy becomes more confined, but the goat’s determination gives the short an unexpectedly affectionate quality. Stan and Ollie don’t set out to create trouble this time. Their inability to abandon the animal creates it for them.

The most revealing pieces in the collection are also two of its weakest as silent comedies. UNACCUSTOMED AS WE ARE and BERTH MARKS were produced as talking pictures while silent versions were prepared for theaters that hadn’t installed sound equipment. Removing the voices and replacing dialogue with intertitles just doesn’t work the way they had hoped or intended.

Scenes pause for exchanges designed to be heard, and several jokes lose their impact without the sounds that prompted them. The long sleeping-berth routine in BERTH MARKS has moments of strong physical discomfort, but it stretches well beyond the point reached by their tighter silent work. UNACCUSTOMED AS WE ARE suffers more because its importance lies partly in hearing Stan and Ollie speak.

Eureka includes the alternate sound version of UNACCUSTOMED AS WE ARE, which makes the comparison especially useful. Hardy’s deliberate voice suits his inflated sense of authority, while Laurel’s uncertain delivery and distressed whimper add dimensions that a silent performance couldn’t provide. Their voices don’t replace the characters established through pantomime; they sound like those characters had been waiting to speak.

Music remains a major part of the main program's performance. Scores by Robert Israel, Neil Brand, Andreas Benz, Maud Nelissen, and Gaylord Carter offer different interpretations of the action, while select shorts include alternate accompaniment. The higher scores support the rhythm rather than trying to underline every movement and collision. Having multiple options also demonstrates how drastically musical choices can alter the energy of silent comedy.

The supplemental package goes well beyond a collection of restored shorts. Every main title receives a newly recorded commentary, with contributors examining the filmmaking, locations, performers, surviving materials, and development of individual routines. A new documentary, alternate presentations, still galleries, and a restored Robert Youngson score for LIBERTY give viewers several ways to revisit familiar material.

The inclusion of the 1929 sound shorts THEY GO BOOM! and THE HOOSE-GOW extends the set’s historical argument. These films show Laurel and Hardy adapting quickly after the uncertainty surrounding their earliest dialogue experiments. The technology had changed, but their relationship hadn’t. Ollie still believed he was in charge; Stan made that belief impossible to maintain, and both remained trapped together after everyone else had reached a sensible breaking point.

Three hours of short comedies will naturally repeat certain situations. Angry wives, impatient landlords, damaged clothing, confused authority figures, and escalating retaliation return in different combinations. Laurel and Hardy prevent the repetition from feeling forced because their relationship is more than that of a fool and a companion. Ollie’s belief in his own dignity is often more dangerous than Stan’s confusion. Stan may set the disaster in motion, but Ollie’s need to regain control gives it room to grow. They irritate, betray, strike, and abandon each other, only to remain side by side when the consequences arrive.

LAUREL & HARDY: THE SILENT YEARS (1929) doesn’t present every short as equal or pretend that nearly century-old film elements can be made flawless. It preserves the brilliance, experimentation, awkward transitions, and physical damage together. When Ollie finally turns toward the audience after another indignity, his request remains clear. Acknowledge what Stan has done, ignore his own contribution, and prepare to laugh when the next thing breaks.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
