The home in Casey Walker’s surreal sci-fi film isn’t just a shelter. It’s a parent, a prison, a teacher, an entertainer, a provider, and a liar all in one. Red (Emma Ho) and Blue (Ian Ho) have food, routine, and rules, which might sound like care, if not for the fact that every part of their existence feels designed by someone who understands childhood only as a system to be managed.

Red and Blue live in total isolation within a retro-automated dwelling. Their world is small, artificial, and weirdly cozy in the way controlled environments can be cozy when nobody inside them knows what’s missing. Entertainment is provided through VHS tapes of a children’s show called “Barn.” A disembodied voice, called "Papa," tells them what to do from behind a locked door. The arrangement has the feeling of a family without the warmth of one, and that mismatch gives HOME BODIES an uncomfortable but necessary connection.

The film doesn’t chase after a loud kind of science-fiction horror. It’s closer to a controlled experiment with bad intentions. Repetition, media, and surveillance have raised Red and Blue, so the real fear isn’t only what’s outside the house. It’s what’s already been installed inside. Their language, behavior, beliefs, and affection have all been shaped by a system they can’t question because it’s the only system they’ve ever known.

That makes Pal's arrival such a strong disruption. Played by Ess Hödlmoser, Pal is introduced as a gift during a holiday that resembles Christmas, which is already an intriguing wink and nod. A new companion should mean comfort, but HOME BODIES seems more interested in the way companionship can become contamination. Pal doesn’t speak. Pal watches, follows, consumes, and unsettles the balance between Red and Blue without needing to explain anything. The silence matters. In a house built on instructions, the character who doesn’t use words becomes the most dangerous presence in the room.

Walker’s background in genre work gives the film a sense of lineage without making it feel like a copy of earlier films. HOME BODIES has echoes of sealed-space horror, analog unease, and science fiction via a puzzle box, but its focus on children makes the material feel more fragile. CUBE used confinement to strip adults down to panic and suspicion. PIN turned weirdness into something cold and psychological. HOME BODIES seems to draw from both while focusing on how people are made, who gets to make them, and what happens when the lesson plan breaks down.

Emma Ho and Ian Ho suggest both sameness and separation simultaneously, which is no small task. Red and Blue begin from a shared artificial childhood, but the story depends on watching differences emerge under pressure. Red’s fascination with Pal, Blue’s response to the loss of that shared rhythm, and the slow breakdown of their world give the film an emotional route through its more abstract ideas. Their innocence isn’t simple. It’s been manufactured, protected, and warped.

Hödlmoser’s Pal demands a delicate balance. Too much expression would ruin the mystery. Too little could flatten the threat. The appeal of Pal is that the character functions like a mirror with something wrong behind it. Red and Blue see a friend, a toy, a sibling, an intruder, or a future, depending on what the house has taught them to understand. The audience gets stuck in that same uncertain space.

The production is essential. Retro futurism can sometimes become a shortcut for style, all old monitors and analog textures without much meaning underneath. HOME BODIES has a stronger reason to use those pieces. VHS tapes, automated systems, locked doors, fake holidays, and children’s programming create a world in which nostalgia has been weaponized as instruction. The house doesn’t just physically trap the characters. It feeds them stories about what the world is and who they’re supposed to be.

HOME BODIES is about a family unit, but not a healthy one. Papa may provide, but provision isn’t love. Red and Blue may be safe from the outside, but safety becomes meaningless when it depends on ignorance. Pal may arrive as a present, but the gift reveals how fragile their home always was. The horror comes from realizing that abuse can look like routine when routine is all someone knows.

Walker uses a small cast and a sealed environment to ask a bigger question about automation and control without turning the film into a lecture. That’s the right move. The fear of machines raising people isn’t only about wires, screens, or voices behind doors. It’s about systems that remove friction, curiosity, danger, choice, and then call the result care. HOME BODIES takes that and shrinks it down to three bodies in one house, where every discovery makes childhood look less like innocence and more like evidence.

HOME BODIES may be a little too opaque for viewers who want answers delivered to them, and its slow-burning approach stems from the tension Walker draws from routine. The setup is sharp, the thematic pressure is timely, and the ensemble gives the film a chance to feel intimate instead of just strange. It’s a cold fable about children raised by a system that never planned for them to become people. That idea is disturbing enough before the door even opens.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
