RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>THREADS begins its march toward extinction in Iran. Watching it in July 2026, while America is actively bombing Iran, transforms what once appeared to be Cold War background noise into the most unnerving part of the film. Director Mick Jackson doesn’t initially announce that Iran will become the point from which civilization unravels. The crisis enters through car radios, television reports, newspaper headlines, and conversations that receive only partial attention. Ruth Beckett (Karen Meagher) and Jimmy Kemp (Reece Dinsdale) have more immediate concerns. Ruth is pregnant, their families need to meet, a wedding is expected, and neither of them appears prepared for the life taking shape around them.<\/p>\n

\n

Their problems aren’t trivial. THREADS doesn’t ridicule ordinary people for concentrating on work, money, housing, and family obligations while international tensions rise. Most of us live that way. Somewhere else is always experiencing war, famine, or political collapse, and daily life teaches us to place those realities behind whatever requires our attention before dinner. Iran is “somewhere else” for the people of Sheffield. Reports describe a coup allegedly backed by the United States, Soviet forces moving into northern Iran, American troops entering the south, and both countries protecting interests they describe as necessary for global security. The words grow more severe, but the physical distance allows everyone to believe that the consequences will remain there.<\/p>\n

That distance feels painfully familiar now. In 2026, Iran isn’t the setting of a fictional confrontation between the United States and a Soviet Union that no longer exists. It’s a country being struck by American bombs during an ongoing war, while Iran retaliates against ships, military bases, and neighboring states connected to the United States. The Strait of Hormuz, oil supplies, missile sites, nuclear concerns, military deterrence, and regional alliances have once again turned Iran into the location where leaders insist escalation can be controlled.<\/p>\n

THREADS doesn’t predict these events with an otherworldly accuracy. Its imagined crisis follows a different political structure, with American and Soviet forces occupying separate portions of Iran before confronting one another directly. Drawing a straight line between the movie and today would flatten both history and the present conflict.<\/p>\n

The resemblance lies in the language and assumptions surrounding escalation. Each strike is described as limited. Every military action is framed as a response to the previous one. Ultimatums are issued to prevent a wider war, even as the ultimatums narrow the available choices. Leaders speak of protecting oil fields, shipping routes, allies, and national credibility. The public is repeatedly assured that force will make the other side retreat.<\/p>\n

Those assurances become the trap. In THREADS, Soviet nuclear warheads are reportedly moved into Mashhad, while the United States positions B-52 bombers in Turkey. An American submarine disappears in the Persian Gulf. A deadline expires, conventional bombing begins, nuclear weapons are used against military targets, and the distinction between a contained exchange and an uncontrollable one dissolves almost immediately. The progression remains frightening because no single decision appears to carry the blame. Each step can be justified in the power's eyes by whatever happened immediately before it. The movie understands that catastrophe may not begin with one leader deciding to destroy the world. It may begin with several leaders believing they can move one step closer to the edge without falling.<\/p>\n

Watching those reports today creates a collision between past and present. Iran’s name was chosen more than four decades ago because the country occupied a volatile position between major powers, energy interests, military alliances, and recent political upheaval. It was believable terrain for a conflict that might pull larger nations into confrontation. What has changed is the arrangement of those powers. The Soviet Union is gone, Iran is no longer merely the ground on which two outside superpowers confront each other, and the United States is now directly engaged in sustained attacks against the country itself. What hasn’t changed is how quickly Iran can be discussed as a collection of targets, resources, shipping routes, and strategic problems rather than a nation filled with human beings.<\/p>\n

THREADS is guilty of that reduction as well. Iran occupies a crucial place in the plot, but Iranian people are almost absent from the film’s concern. We hear about troop movements, military bases, coups, oil fields, and explosions in Mashhad without meeting anyone whose home has become the battlefield. Iran matters because of what happens later to Britain, not because Iranians are already being killed and displaced. That absence is one of the film’s most revealing limitations. Jackson and writer Barry Hines are interested in showing British viewers that war in a distant country can eventually reach their own streets. The approach is effective, but it also reflects the same hierarchy of attention it warns against. Iran becomes real only when the consequences arrive in Sheffield.<\/p>\n

The current conflict makes that weakness harder to ignore. News about Iran frequently arrives through numbers. Targets destroyed, missiles launched, soldiers killed, ships attacked, oil prices raised, and negotiations delayed. Those facts matter, but their repetition can drain the people beneath them of individuality. The war becomes another developing story until its economic or military consequences reach our own homes.<\/p>\n

THREADS builds its first half around that exact habit of detachment. Ruth and Jimmy don’t understand the strategic situation well enough to explain it, but neither do most of the officials and commentators speaking through their televisions. Information arrives in fragments. A development that sounds serious on Monday is replaced by something worse on Tuesday, while everyone continues assuming there will be time for diplomacy to correct the direction. Jackson’s restraint during this buildup is one of the film’s greatest strengths. There’s no sinister music telling us which report marks the point of no return. Fighter jets pass overhead. Protests grow. Shoppers begin clearing shelves. Local officials retreat into a basement and attempt to follow emergency plans that already seem inadequate.<\/p>\n

The Sheffield council meetings reveal the absurdity beneath the belief that nuclear war can be administered. Officials assign responsibilities for food, transportation, medical care, and public order without having the resources or communication systems required to maintain any of them after an attack. Their plans reduce catastrophe to charts and procedures because bureaucracy has no room for the disappearance of the society it serves.<\/p>\n

Jackson frames the nuclear attack as panic, broken communication, crowded streets, flashes of light, collapsing buildings, and people staring at something their minds can’t absorb. The limited budget keeps the destruction close to the ground, denying viewers the safer distance of a wide, impressive image. There’s nothing victorious or seductive about the blast. No military objective could make what follows appear worthwhile. Bodies burn, hospitals cease to function, water becomes dangerous, food systems collapse, and survivors discover that living through the initial attack has only placed them at the beginning of a longer death.<\/p>\n

THREADS rejects the fantasy that survivors will simply rebuild with enough determination. Knowledge requires institutions, and institutions require people, electricity, transportation, sanitation, communication, and food. Remove enough of those supports and civilization doesn’t restart from a clean foundation. It loses abilities with every passing year. Ruth becomes the film’s path through that decline. Meagher’s performance strips away everything the character once expected from adulthood without turning her into a conventional survivor figure. Ruth continues because her body continues, not because the film grants her some inspirational purpose.<\/p>\n

Her pregnancy carries none of the usual promise associated with new life. A child born after the attack inherits radiation, hunger, violence, damaged language, and a world incapable of teaching what it once knew. The following generation doesn’t remember civilization well enough to mourn it properly.<\/p>\n

The later time jumps give THREADS its perspective, although they also weaken some of the emotional intimacy created by the families. As the film moves across years, its characters increasingly become evidence within a report on agricultural failure, educational loss, disease, and genetic damage. The narration sometimes explains what the images have already communicated. That distance prevents the second half from maintaining the personal force of the buildup and attack. It also makes a cruel kind of sense. Individuality becomes another casualty as people are reduced to labor, hunger, reproduction, and survival. The film begins with families debating a wedding and ends in a society where human life has lost almost every structure that once gave those decisions meaning.<\/p>\n

Severin Films’ 4K restoration can reveal more information in the original 16mm photography, but THREADS still doesn’t look pristine. Its grain, cramped compositions, television-news footage, and washed-out environments contribute to the feeling that someone documented events rather than designed them. The production’s rough surfaces keep the horror attached to recognizable streets and rooms. The film remains a punishing experience, but its value doesn’t come from how miserable it can make an audience feel. Its real achievement is exposing the emotional distance that allows escalation to continue.<\/p>\n

THREADS doesn’t argue that ordinary people should abandon daily life whenever international conflict develops. It asks us to recognize how quickly repeated danger becomes normal and how easily the phrase “limited military action” can hide the possibility of consequences no leader can reverse. The Iran crisis at the beginning once made the film feel anchored to a particular Cold War moment. In 2026, it feels like the element that has aged least. The countries, leaders, weapons, and alliances have changed, but Iran has once again become the place where powerful nations test how far they can escalate while insisting they remain in control.<\/p>\n

By the time Sheffield burns, nobody cares who issued the first ultimatum or which strike was officially considered retaliatory. The people beneath the mushroom cloud inherit every decision without having participated in any of them. THREADS understands that wars may begin far away, but there’s no guarantee their consequences will stay there.<\/p>\n
