BIRDCALL begins like a children’s educational program produced by a government that has already accepted the end of life as we know it, using the presentation and friendly instructions to describe an avian-spread disease with horrifying consequences. The contrast is funny for a moment, right before the implications settle in.

The video introduces a future in which humanity has withdrawn into protected compounds after losing control of the world around them. Infection causes the body to deteriorate, attracting predatory birds that can track their victims. Citizens are told to report anyone showing symptoms and never venture beyond protected territory alone. Jon and Rosie soon disregard enough of those warnings to make their cabin feel dangerous before anything appears outside.

Jon is a scientist who has become infected while working on a possible treatment. Rather than disclose his condition, he brings Rosie away from the compound and turns their trip into an unauthorized test of his experimental cure. She doesn’t understand the real reason they’re there, leaving him in control of the location, the information, and the risk she never agreed to accept.

BIRDCALL ends up having a lot more substance than the outbreak story we get in the beginning. Jon may tell himself that he’s pursuing a cure, but his methods reveal someone who believes his intelligence grants him authority over everyone nearby. Rosie isn’t his partner in the experiment. She’s another variable, protected from the truth until telling her becomes unavoidable.

Sam Beaton plays Jon with enough confidence to make his behavior almost reasonable, at least in the beginning. He speaks like someone accustomed to being believed, treating enormous ethical violations as temporary inconveniences on the path toward proving himself right. His physical condition gradually challenges that, although even fear doesn’t immediately loosen his grip on the situation.

The infection intensifies traits that were already present. Jon becomes more erratic as his condition worsens, but the disease can’t be blamed for the original lie or his decision to involve Rosie without her consent. BIRDCALL understands that transformation is often most effective when it exposes a preexisting moral failure rather than creating one from nothing.

Vassiliki Gicopoulos gives Rosie a more complicated position than the spouse who slowly realizes something is wrong. Her dependence on Jon and the society he represents has shaped their relationship long before the cabin. The short gradually reveals how survival can become another means of control when one person owns the information, resources, and access to safety.

The sounds beyond the walls may belong to creatures capable of tearing Rosie apart, yet remaining inside means trusting a husband who has placed her in danger for his own purposes. The cabin becomes a trap without the need for locked doors. Someone else’s decision has contaminated every available choice.

Director Justin Calandriello moves between several visual formats, including the instructional presentation, Jon’s camera, video messages, and security footage from around the property. Each source has a reason to exist within the story, preventing the found-footage approach from feeling like an arbitrary attempt to hide the production’s limitations. Jon wants documentation because he expects his experiment to succeed, making the camera part of his ego rather than a device everyone refuses to put down. The format also allows the couple’s relationship to be observed from different distances. Their private recordings provide direct access to fear and frustration, while the surveillance angles make them look like subjects being watched inside a laboratory. Jon believes he’s studying the infection, though the footage increasingly resembles evidence of what his choices have done to Rosie.

The advisory program creates such a strange and memorable entrance that the more familiar handheld confessionals can feel kind of ordinary by comparison. Transitions between security recordings and the broader analog presentation don’t always create a consistent feeling, particularly when the film needs to deliver both relationship history and outbreak information within fifteen minutes.

Calandriello compensates by keeping much of the larger danger outside. Bird cries, movement beyond the cabin, and the uncertainty surrounding what these creatures have become create a world beyond the frame. That restraint mostly serves the horror, even when a few effects sound more odd than threatening. The short’s construction is more persuasive, charting Jon’s deterioration without revealing everything at once. The damage looks painful, and increasingly difficult to conceal, giving Beaton something physical to work against as Jon’s confidence begins to collapse with his body.

In my opinion, the shorts' best idea was keeping the creatures themselves out of sight. In a film like this, the budget often directs the story constraints. Too often, people make the mistake of trying to compensate; instead, here, they decide to keep the threat off screen. As I often will say, “you don’t always have to see the scary.” I think that worked so much better than what the alternative could have been.

Halle Kott’s screenplay is more accusatory toward the people who assumed they would always remain in charge. Humanity isolated itself within compounds instead of rebuilding its relationship with the environment, carrying class divisions and power structures into whatever came next. Jon represents that refusal to change. Even after the natural order has been overturned, he behaves as though the world remains something he can manipulate, document, and own. BIRDCALL only has enough time to sketch that world they live in. The compounds, abandoned outsiders, scientific hierarchy, altered ecosystem, and power imbalance within Jon and Rosie’s marriage could sustain a much longer story. Here, several of those elements remain provocative suggestions rather than developed parts of the narrative.

The limited runtime makes certain emotional changes arrive quickly. Rosie has to process several betrayals while facing immediate danger, leaving Gicopoulos to carry transitions the screenplay can’t always slow down to explore. Her performance keeps those turns connected, though another few minutes could have made her final decisions feel less compressed. I think there’s some really interesting potential here in what a deeper dive into this society could be.

BIRDCALL refuses to treat infection as its only source of horror. Its combination of analog presentation, marital struggles, environmental revenge, and body horror isn’t always seamless, but the pieces create something far more interesting than a straightforward cabin attack. Jon enters the woods believing the camera will preserve the moment he defeats the disease. What it records instead is a man discovering that intelligence, authority, and good intentions don’t excuse placing another person’s life beneath his own ambitions. The birds may be waiting outside, but the ugliest threat arrived with Rosie and never bothered to tell her the truth.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
