RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Jean-Claude Van Damme was already established as a fighter by 1990, but DEATH WARRANT asks him to do something slightly different. Rather than entering a tournament or avenging a murdered relative, he has to do an investigation. The kicks remain part of the package, obviously. Yet, the movie delays some of its martial arts gratification in favor of whispered conversations, suspicious medical records, alliances, and a mystery that becomes more distorted as Louis Burke moves closer to the truth.<\/p>\n

\n

Burke is a Canadian police officer introduced while pursuing Christian Naylor, a serial killer better known as the Sandman. Their opening confrontation establishes the kind of reality the movie intends to be. The Sandman appears almost impossible to kill, Burke performs his police duties with the confidence of a professional athlete, and no one seems particularly concerned with paperwork after the shooting stops. It’s efficient action filmmaking, establishing a hero, a monster, and unfinished business before sending Burke into an entirely different nightmare.<\/p>\n

A series of unexplained deaths inside a California prison leads officials to recruit Burke for an undercover investigation. He ends up portraying a convicted criminal while attorney Amanda Beckett pretends to be his wife and carries information between him and the outside world. Burke must determine why inmates are dying, avoid exposing himself as a cop, and survive a population that correctly senses something unusual about the new arrival.<\/p>\n

David S. Goyer wrote the screenplay early in his career, years before his name became associated with BLADE, BATMAN, and large-scale comic book adaptations. His script already shows an interest in hidden institutions, systems protected by corruption, and protagonists discovering that the official explanation is never the one with all the right answers. The mystery isn’t especially difficult to solve. It gives DEATH WARRANT a stronger backbone than martial arts vehicles built around little more than getting their star into the next fight.<\/p>\n

The prison is less a correctional facility than a compressed collection of every dangerous possibility an action movie could fit behind one set of walls. Gangs control sections, guards openly abuse inmates, murder can occur without meaningful scrutiny, and seemingly everyone knows about Burke before he knows about them. Realism would only get in the way. Deran Sarafian directs the place as a maze where Burke can’t cross a room without attracting another threat.<\/p>\n

That creates most of the fun. The movie moves quickly, introduces its supporting characters with minimal ceremony, and trusts that clearly defined attitudes will substitute for elaborate histories. Burke earns respect because he refuses to submit. Hawkins becomes an ally because Robert Guillaume can communicate intelligence and authority before the screenplay has explained the character. Guillaume gives the film more weight than it probably requires. Hawkins has learned how to survive without pretending that survival is freedom, and his presence balances Burke’s readiness to confront anyone standing in his path. Their friendship develops, though Guillaume makes the connection feel less convenient than it is. Hawkins recognizes that Burke represents disruption, and in this prison, disruption may be the only remaining path toward justice.<\/p>\n

Cynthia Gibb faces a harder assignment as Amanda. She spends much of the movie moving between exposition, concern, and the inevitable romantic attraction forming between her and Burke. Gibb gives Amanda enough determination to keep her from becoming just a contact on the outside, especially as her own investigation places her in danger. The character remains limited by a screenplay far more interested in Burke’s experience behind bars, but she does more than wait for updates.<\/p>\n

Van Damme is still developing as a performer here, and the role doesn’t demand complicated emotional shifts. Burke is observant, principled, and almost absurdly difficult to intimidate. Van Damme’s reserve suits an undercover officer who can’t reveal too much of himself. At the same time, his physical control communicates what Burke is capable of long before the major fights.<\/p>\n

None of this would be as memorable without Patrick Kilpatrick’s Sandman. The character operates beyond ordinary villain logic, returning to Burke’s life like a figure who has escaped from a slasher movie and wandered into a prison thriller. Kilpatrick doesn’t soften the performance or search for psychological nuance. His Sandman lives to terrorize Burke, delivers threats as though they’ve been carved into stone, and absorbs punishment with a durability that stops just short of the supernatural. Bringing him into the prison is wildly convenient, yet it gives the movie a villain with more presence than the officials controlling the murder operation. The conspiracy provides the mystery, but the Sandman provides the identity.<\/p>\n

Logic becomes even less important during the conclusion. Burke moves through underground corridors, inmates settle scores, alliances form at convenient moments, and the Sandman waits for the confrontation promised by the opening scene. Sarafian stages the climax with enough grime and punishment to justify the shortcuts. By then, the film has stopped asking us to believe in the investigation and started delivering the rematch it’s owed us from the beginning.<\/p>\n

The final fight is strange, excessive, and completely faithful to the movie surrounding it. Kilpatrick treats every blow as further proof that the Sandman can’t be stopped, while Van Damme sells Burke’s exhaustion without sacrificing the precision of his movements. The setting adds a nearly mythic quality, reducing the conflict to a hero trying to destroy something that refuses to remain dead.<\/p>\n

At 89 minutes, DEATH WARRANT doesn’t leave much time to examine its ethical implications, deepen its inmates, or even really explore its convenient plotting. It also doesn’t linger long enough for those weaknesses to drain the entertainment from it. The mystery keeps Burke moving, the prison supplies a threat, and the Sandman gives Van Damme one of the more enjoyably unrestrained enemies from this stage of his career.<\/p>\n

The new MVD collector’s edition is a fitting home for a movie shaped by the rental era. The release includes the film on 4K and Blu-ray, a restoration from the original camera negative, a commentary by Sarafian, archival interviews, reversible artwork, and a retro mini-poster. Those additions recognize DEATH WARRANT for what it has become. Not Van Damme’s greatest film, but the kind of sincere action thriller that gained much of its following after leaving theaters.<\/p>\n

There are better Van Damme performances, more ambitious prison films, and mysteries that withstand closer inspection. Few combine all three ingredients with a villain named the Sandman, a criminal organ operation, and a hero whose investigative technique eventually requires kicking his way through the basement. DEATH WARRANT knows the audience came for Van Damme, but it gives him a reasonably sturdy movie to fight through.<\/p>\n
