In HOKUM, Damian McCarthy gives the Bilberry Woods Hotel an unnerving awareness of its guests, making its corridors feel like you’re being watched, and every locked door suggests that Ohm Bauman has already wandered closer than he realizes.

That doesn’t make the reaction any less warranted. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have delivered an entertaining adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel, one filled with clever scientific problems, enormous consequences, humor, and an appealing belief in cooperation. There’s nothing careless about the production, and very little of it could be called outright unsuccessful. It simply registered as a good movie being celebrated as transformative.

Ryland Grace wakes aboard a spaceship without knowing his name, where he is, or the reason for being there. The ship’s systems gradually bring him back to health while fragments of memory explain the circumstances that sent him into deep space. Earth’s sun is losing energy because of a mysterious microorganism, and Grace may be humanity’s final opportunity to understand the threat before food systems collapse and billions die.

Drew Goddard’s screenplay moves between Grace’s present-day investigation and his recovered memories of the international effort behind the mission. This structure gives the film two mysteries at once. Grace has to determine what’s happening to the stars while also reconstructing what happened to him. Each memory provides another part of the scientific puzzle, though it also delays the film from settling in.

The Earthbound scenes are packed with information, meetings, experiments, and accelerated problem-solving. They make a potentially dense scenario understandable without reducing every discussion to nonsense. Grace tests theories, makes mistakes, changes variables, and tries again. The explanations are simplified enough for a general audience, but the movie preserves the pleasure of watching intelligent people use evidence rather than intuition to reach an answer.

Ryan Gosling is naturally suited to that combination of intelligence, panic, and self-deprecating humor. He can hold the screen without making Grace seem impossibly composed. His confusion feels real, particularly during the early scenes when physical movements become exhausting. As Grace regains confidence, Gosling shifts into the kind of capable leading-man performance that has become familiar for him.

That familiarity may be part of why Grace never became as compelling as the situation around him. Gosling is funny, vulnerable, and likable, but the performance rarely feels unpredictable. Grace’s enthusiasm and improvised problem-solving are charming, while the more uncomfortable parts of his personality receive less room to breathe. A later issue adds necessary dimension to the character, yet the film is quick to guide the audience back toward affection.

Sandra Hüller brings far more friction as Eva Stratt, the official granted extraordinary authority over the planetary response. Stratt isn’t interested in being liked because popularity has no value when the sun is dying. She recruits people, redirects industries, overrides governments, and makes the hard decisions without pretending everyone will forgive her afterward.

Hüller gives the Earth scenes an urgency the larger disaster sometimes lacks. Her expressions suggest someone who understands exactly how many lives are attached to every delay, and she refuses to soften Stratt into a gentle bureaucrat. A farewell scene briefly allows that control to crack. It’s one of the movie’s most memorable moments because Hüller reveals the emotional cost of Stratt’s choices without asking for sympathy or delivering a speech that explains everything.

The production finds its real spark after Grace encounters Rocky, an alien engineer undertaking a similar mission on behalf of another world. Rocky doesn’t have eyes, a mouth, or facial expressions designed to make him adorable. His movements, “language,” and curious personality accomplish that without forcing the character into something they’re not.

Their developing friendship is the reason the film works. Grace and Rocky don’t begin with a translation device or conveniently shared understanding. They create a vocabulary through observation, repetition, mathematics, and patience. The process is funny without turning Rocky into comic relief, and it demonstrates the film’s belief more effectively than any speech could. Cooperation begins with the willingness to keep trying until another person can understand you.

Much of the movie’s reputation rests on that relationship, and it’s easy to understand why audiences have responded so strongly. Rocky is endearing, the friendship is heartfelt, and the eventual sacrifices carry genuine feeling. My difficulty was that the film pushes its emotional intentions so clearly that several major moments felt arranged for the expected reaction. The sentiment is sincere, but sincerity alone doesn’t guarantee impact.

The humor is most effective when it emerges from Grace and Rocky trying to understand each other. A few of Grace’s solo remarks sound designed to keep the audience comfortable whenever the isolation threatens to become genuinely frightening. That instinct to remain accessible also limits the danger. The premise involves planetary starvation, death on a universal scale, and a mission with an almost nonexistent chance of success. The movie rarely becomes as frightening or severe as those circumstances suggest. Problems arrive in regular intervals, Grace talks through them, and another scientific solution takes shape. The process remains engaging, though its rhythm becomes predictable.

At 156 minutes, PROJECT HAIL MARY has enough material to justify the substantial runtime. The problem isn’t that nothing happens. The film keeps introducing discoveries, failures, questions, and ethical decisions, yet its repeated cycle of crisis, calculation, and solution eventually reduces the tension.

Watching at home likely shaped part of my response. This is clearly designed for the big screen and a sound system capable of surrounding the audience with sounds, music, and the scale of deep space. The images remain impressive on television, but impressive isn’t the same as overwhelming. A theatrical viewing may have made its achievements feel more, even though the underlying reservations would remain.

Comparisons to THE MARTIAN are unavoidable because both stories come from Weir and involve a scientist surviving through experimentation, humor, and stubbornness. PROJECT HAIL MARY adds a more emotional relationship and considerably larger stakes, but it doesn’t have the earlier film’s compact scale. Its ambition is greater, while its impact is strangely softer.

The result is a science-fiction adventure with exceptional craft and a friendship worth caring about. Gosling carries the material, Hüller gives the supporting story some bite, and Rocky earns every bit of the affection directed his way. It just never became the extraordinary experience its reputation promised. PROJECT HAIL MARY reached me as a solid, charming movie whose greatest achievement is making an audience care about a rock, even when the mission surrounding him feels considerably less miraculous.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
