RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> As synthesizers swell, guitars point out the romantic turning points, and vocals assure us that every embarrassment carries enormous emotional importance. The songs are unmistakably tied to the 1980s, with several being catchy enough to survive outside the movie. Including the soundtrack CD with the Remastered Collector’s Edition isn’t just a nice bonus; it preserves the part of this production most likely to earn genuine affection.<\/p>\n

\n

Everything surrounding that music is considerably rougher. With that said, the movie isn’t as bad as it's remembered. It’s not an all-time classic, but still an enjoyable 80s flick. Francesco Lucente’s Canadian teen comedy had limited resources, uneven performances, and a screenplay that stretches a thin romantic wager across nearly 90 minutes. It resembles a homemade attempt to reproduce the kind of adolescent fantasy Hollywood was releasing throughout the decade, only without the cast, crew, or financial support needed to hide its shortcomings.<\/p>\n

That may sound harsher than it should have. Lucente isn’t interested in cruelty, humiliation, or the sexual excess associated with many teen comedies from the period. His film repeatedly approaches that territory before retreating into something far more innocent. Even its indecent proposal is treated less as an excuse for exploitation than as the starting point for a lesson about honesty.<\/p>\n

Mike Underwood, played by Joseph R. Straface, accepts a $2,000 bet from local bully Randy that he can persuade Diane to spend a weekend with him at the secluded Paradise Bungalows. Diane is known as “Snow White” because of her carefully guarded reputation, making her the perfect target for two men eager to settle their rivalry through someone else’s dignity. Mike initially sees her as a prize, then begins developing sincere feelings once his increasingly ridiculous courtship places them together.<\/p>\n

The wager creates a problem that the movie never really confronts. Mike’s behavior is invasive, dishonest, and motivated by pride, yet PARADISE BUNGALOWS treats most of his deception as harmless. His redemption ultimately depends on bravery and a public confrontation with Randy rather than a serious acknowledgment of what he did to Diane. The screenplay understands that lying was wrong, though it remains more concerned with restoring Mike’s honor than examining why Diane’s trust was treated as a commodity.<\/p>\n

Straface projects a certain gawky decency, which helps prevent Mike from becoming completely unpleasant, but his delivery frequently sounds memorized rather than experienced. Pauses land in unusual places and expressions remain fixed while scenes ask for panic, affection, or embarrassment. Mike is supposed to win Diane through persistence and vulnerability, yet Straface rarely supplies the magnetism needed to make her growing interest feel natural.<\/p>\n

Stacy Christensen gives the movie a much more convincing performance as Diane. She brings a warmth to scenes that otherwise strain, and her reactions create a more believable progression than the dialogue provides. Diane initially regards Mike with understandable confusion, gradually lowers her defenses, and appears genuinely hurt when the truth becomes known. Christensen can’t fix the screenplay’s limited conception of the character, but she gives Diane enough personality to exist beyond the reputation everyone else keeps discussing.<\/p>\n

Their romance has a strange imbalance. Diane is poised and socially comfortable, while Mike behaves like someone attempting to be a human from instructions written on an index card. That contrast is meant to be charming. At times it is, particularly when Diane recognizes that Mike’s clumsiness comes from insecurity rather than arrogance. More often, the attraction depends on the movie insisting that his persistence has become appealing.<\/p>\n

Lucente devotes an extraordinary amount of time to Mike’s fantasies. The largest is an extended James Bond parody in which Mike imagines himself as a secret agent, complete with weapons, danger, glamorous women, and music designed to imitate the spy adventure. The sequence is much too long, yet its commitment makes it difficult to dismiss. It has almost nothing to do with advancing the romance, although it reveals exactly how Mike sees himself when reality isn’t interfering. I feel like this was more about a director with a passion for Bond than a real part of the story. PARADISE BUNGALOWS dreams at a scale its production can’t support, then proceeds as though enthusiasm might close the distance.<\/p>\n

Mike’s early attempts to impress Diane produce the funniest moments, although the comedy tends to last just a beat too long. A milk delivery ends with chocolate milk sprayed across Diane and her home. Mike later pretends to be an accomplished swimmer, jumps into a pool, and nearly drowns until Diane rescues him. Neither sequence is elegant, but both understand the appeal of watching a dishonest man become the victim of his own performance.<\/p>\n

J.T. Wotton appears more comfortable in front of the camera as Mike’s friend Charles. His delivery is loose enough to create the impression of an actual conversation, giving Straface a stronger presence to react against. Anna Lisa Iapaolo does similar work as Diane’s friend Judy, who sees through Mike’s behavior and eventually exposes the wager. Their supporting roles are functional, though both performers bring a spontaneity missing from the lead performance.<\/p>\n

Lee Barringer’s Randy is written as a bully without much of a defining life. His purpose is to sneer, provoke Mike, and represent the kind of masculinity the hero must eventually reject. The film then handles that rejection peculiarly by sending both men to an abandoned airport for a deadly game of chicken. The climax wants the grandeur of REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE while carrying the dramatic weight of a schoolyard argument. It’s disconnected from the gentle courtship preceding it, and Diane once again becomes an observer while the men settle ownership of the situation between themselves.<\/p>\n

A release like this has value because it preserves the movie as it was made rather than attempting to transform it into something deeper or more elegant. The included trailer provides a small piece of its promotional history, while the soundtrack CD gives the music room to stand independently. Tracks such as “Wait for Another Day” and “Strange Things to Remember” carry the sincere, oversized emotion that the actors and screenplay struggle to express.<\/p>\n

There’s an audience for this oddity. Viewers drawn to forgotten productions, inexpensive 1980s teen movies, or ambitious failures will find plenty to examine. The film captures a group of people attempting to create a romantic comedy with little more than available locations, music, and confidence. Its inadequacies are obvious, yet so is the effort behind them. Sincerity alone basically keeps those weaknesses from making the experience feel like a miss. Christensen provides emotional stability, the locations are gorgeous, the soundtrack is far better than expected, and the movie’s determination to remain sweet separates it from the sleazier productions suggested by its alternate title.<\/p>\n

The Remastered Collector’s Edition gives a neglected movie a generous release. It doesn’t uncover a great classic, but it does preserve a curious, deeply earnest production whose limitations have become part of its identity. PARADISE BUNGALOWS keeps stumbling forward with such open determination that rejecting it entirely feels almost impolite.<\/p>\n
