RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> POPEYE becomes easier to appreciate over time, because once we move on from the perceived expectations, the film can stand on its own. Robert Altman didn’t turn the sailor into a streamlined studio flick with songs, conflicts, and jokes aimed directly at children. He built an entire town (literally), filled it with eccentrics, and let Popeye wander through the streets and their lives as though he had stumbled into one of Altman’s ensemble dramas.<\/p>\n

Sweethaven is introduced before its newest resident has found his footing. People argue, collect taxes, chase hamburgers, share their grievances, and move through buildings that appear one strong wind away from collapsing into the harbor. Background conversations compete with the dialogue in front of the camera. The town doesn’t wait for Popeye to arrive before beginning its day. Sweethaven feels inhabited in a way few comic-strip adaptations ever would be expected to attempt, with every restaurant, dock, and sagging staircase suggesting another dispute happening outside the frame. Altman’s attention drifts toward those details so frequently that the story sometimes appears to have been misplaced somewhere inside the production design.<\/p>\n

Popeye reaches town while searching for his missing father, Poopdeck Pappy. He rents a room from the Oyl family, meets their daughter Olive, and quickly becomes involved with an abandoned baby whose ability to predict the future attracts unwanted attention. Bluto, Olive’s large and unpleasant fiancé, eventually provides the threat expected from the character, although POPEYE takes considerable time getting around to it.<\/p>\n

Robin Williams makes his feature-film starring debut behind one eye, enormous forearms, and a voice that turns every sentence into an argument with the English language. Much of Popeye’s dialogue is delivered through muttering, unfinished thoughts, and words bent and twisted until they sound as battered as the sailor himself.<\/p>\n

The performance remains remarkably disciplined beneath those mannerisms. Williams doesn’t play Popeye as a version of the rapid-fire comedian he would become. He restricts himself to the character’s physicality, posture, defensive grumbling, and occasional bursts of bewildered kindness. His Popeye rarely tries to command a room. He looks as though he would prefer everyone to stop bothering him long enough to finish explaining himself.<\/p>\n

Popeye’s growing attachment to Swee’Pea causes Williams to become gentler without abandoning the sailor’s roughness, particularly when Popeye carries the child through town or responds to danger with the irritation of someone whose daily inconvenience has become personal. Their scenes reveal the tenderness beneath his complaints without forcing Popeye into some over-the-top transformation.<\/p>\n

Shelley Duvall appears to have crossed directly onto the screen from E.C. Segar’s drawings into reality. Her movements, voice, expressions, and nervous hands make Olive Oyl immediately recognizable, though resemblance alone doesn’t account for the performance. Duvall understands Olive as someone whose uncertainty has been mistaken for weakness by nearly everyone around her. Olive’s engagement to Bluto has less to do with affection than the exhausting expectations of family. She complains about him, fears him, and struggles to explain why she has accepted a future she clearly doesn’t want. Duvall turns those contradictions into a personality rather than treating Olive as a joke waiting for Popeye to rescue her.<\/p>\n

“He Needs Me” captures that personality better than any dialogue could. Olive wanders through Sweethaven, convincing herself that Popeye’s indifference is evidence of hidden dependence, singing with a confidence that keeps threatening to disappear. Harry Nilsson’s melody leaves space around Duvall’s voice, allowing every pause and repeated phrase to sound like a thought being discovered. Nilsson’s songs rarely feel like conventional showstoppers. Characters don’t stop the story and deliver statements of purpose. They mumble, repeat themselves, lose their place, and sing ideas that sound partially formed. The music belongs to people who aren’t especially good at explaining what they feel. But there’s some sort of comfort in the reality of that performance.<\/p>\n

Paul Dooley’s Wimpy is one of Altman’s ideal background residents. He enters scenes searching for food, offering promises he has no intention of keeping, and behaving as though everyone else has misunderstood an arrangement designed entirely for his benefit. The movie never pauses to explain why the Oyl family tolerates him. He simply occupies a permanent place at their table.<\/p>\n

Ray Walston brings harshness to Poopdeck Pappy. His long-awaited reunion with Popeye doesn’t offer the resolution suggested by the search. Pappy is selfish, argumentative, and more interested in treasure than repairing the relationship with the son who crossed the sea looking for him. Walston and Williams resemble relatives largely because neither character knows how to express affection without making it sound like an accusation.<\/p>\n

Paul L. Smith’s Bluto has the physical scale and enough fury to make Popeye appear to be in danger. The character is less interesting before the final confrontation, when he spends much of his time threatening people. His treatment of Olive gives the movie a darker edge than its PG-rated slapstick might suggest, particularly because the townspeople have accepted his intimidation as part of everyday life.<\/p>\n

Altman’s commitment to Segar’s comic-strip world separates POPEYE from the animated image many viewers bring to it. The sailor’s famous spinach remains largely absent until the climax; Popeye isn’t treated as some invincible hero, and the supporting residents receive nearly as much attention as the title character. This isn’t a feature-length imitation of the Fleischer cartoons. It’s a live-action interpretation of the world from which those cartoons emerged.<\/p>\n

Wolf Kroeger’s production design makes that interpretation tangible. Sweethaven was constructed at Anchor Bay in Malta, and the warped wooden buildings remain one of the most impressive practical environments created for a family movie. Doors hang at odd angles, walkways cross over one another, and every structure appears shaped by generations of damp weather and questionable repairs. Decades after filming wrapped, this whimsical village remarkably still stands today, serving as an enduring testament to the longevity of Kroeger's imaginative craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

Paramount’s 45th Anniversary set includes the film on 4K UHD and Blu-ray alongside a digital copy. A detailed production like this has an obvious reason to exist in a higher-resolution format, since so much of its character lives in weathered surfaces, handmade buildings, layered crowd scenes, and small visual jokes hiding at the edges. The release also provides another opportunity to separate the movie from its lingering reputation as an uncomplicated failure.<\/p>\n

POPEYE earned a respectable theatrical return, but disappointment surrounding its cost and difficult production hardened into a story of disaster. The finished movie is neither an overlooked triumph nor the embarrassment that reputation suggests. It’s an expensive studio production shaped by artists who had little interest in behaving as though they were making one. That refusal produces moments of genuine beauty alongside passages that test patience. Williams and Duvall don’t just resemble Popeye and Olive; they find the anxious, stubborn people inside the drawings. Sweethaven feels alive because Altman allows its residents to interrupt one another instead of waiting politely for their turns.<\/p>\n

POPEYE rambles, mumbles, and occasionally forgets that a family audience may need something to follow. It also creates a place unlike any other adaptation and lets Shelley Duvall sing one of the sweetest declarations of uncertain love ever placed in a movie. The sailor man survives his own unwieldy production through stubbornness, which seems entirely appropriate. POPEYE may never move gracefully, but it remains defiantly itself.<\/p>\n
