RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>P.O. BOX TINTO BRASS is probably one of the clearest examples of what Tinto Brass wanted his erotic films to be by the mid-90s. There isn’t much interest in disguising his preferences behind an elaborate story, and the movie doesn’t pretend sex needs to lead toward tragedy, punishment, or some larger lesson. Brass plays himself, sits alongside his secretary Lucia as correspondence comes in from women describing their fantasies and experiences, and uses those letters as an excuse to wander through nine largely independent stories. It’s self-indulgent by design, sometimes ridiculously so, although that directness is also a large part of why it works.<\/p>\n

Brass claimed the material came out of letters sent by women responding to his earlier films, particularly ALL LADIES DO IT. Whether every detail was on the page matters less than what happens once those stories pass through him. They become unmistakably Tinto Brass fantasies, full of voyeurism, exhibitionism, infidelity, sexual curiosity and people discovering that they’re considerably less inhibited than they thought. The idea that this is some objective survey of female desire is difficult to take seriously. P.O. BOX TINTO BRASS is closer to a conversation between the fantasies people sent him and the fantasies he already enjoyed putting on screen.<\/p>\n

The anthology format suits him surprisingly well. Brass doesn’t have to build a conventional dramatic storyline or keep finding reasons for the same characters to encounter increasingly provocative situations. He receives a letter; the movie shifts to another story, and everything resets once that adventure has run its course. Some episodes are only lightly connected to anything resembling reality. In contrast, others find their humor in marriages and relationships where sexual experimentation becomes another part of the negotiation between two people. The stories vary considerably in effectiveness, though the shifts in characters and locations keep weaker parts from ever overstaying their welcome.<\/p>\n

There’s also much more comedy here than someone unfamiliar with Brass’ reality might expect. P.O. BOX TINTO BRASS is erotic, but it’s rarely solemn about it. Brass likes embarrassment, misunderstandings, mischievous glances and characters enjoying the realization that somebody is watching them. Sex isn’t presented as territory requiring psychological excavation. People are curious, amused, occasionally ridiculous and usually having a good time. Riz Ortolani’s score greatly enhances the experience, giving the individual stories something that prevents the succession of encounters from becoming repetitive.<\/p>\n

Cinzia Roccaforte's portrayal of Lucia, Brass’ secretary and frequent partner in reading the incoming correspondence, gives the framing subject matter a personality that goes beyond moving the film from one fantasy to another. Roccaforte plays Lucia with a confidence that suggests she understands exactly what sort of place she’s working in and has decided to enjoy herself. Her reactions to Brass provide some of the movie’s simplest comedy, and the eventual expansion of her role feels natural because she’s been such an engaging presence between the stories. Brass, meanwhile, is more than comfortable turning himself into part director, part host, and part dirty older man, complete with the cigar and that grin.<\/p>\n

That self-awareness only carries the movie so far. Brass may be having fun with his own reputation, although P.O. BOX TINTO BRASS occasionally becomes so impressed with him that the joke starts feeling like admiration rather than parody. The supposedly female perspective is also limited by the fact that every fantasy is consistently filtered through the same visual styles and exploitation. Different women may be doing the confessing, but Brass remains the one deciding where the camera looks, how bodies are framed, and which details deserve attention.<\/p>\n

The unevenness extends to the stories themselves. A few have enough personality or playful escalation to function as satisfying little shorts, while others seem to exist primarily because Brass found the situation appealing. Characterization is thin, and there are stretches where the distinction between one fantasy and the next amounts to little more than a change in location and participants. At 94 minutes, the uncut version comes close to exhausting the concept. Cutting away from one scenario just as its novelty wears off keeps the movie moving, although a little additional selectivity would have made the stronger episodes stand out more.<\/p>\n

From a visual perspective, there’s no mistaking the director behind it. Brass uses mirrors, windows, doorways, and people watching other people to make voyeurism part of the actual bones and construction, rather than merely a subject for discussion. Outdoor locations give several sequences an unexpectedly bright quality, while interiors frequently provide another excuse to place characters within frames. The new Cult Epics 4K restoration makes all of that so much easier to appreciate. Sourced from the original negative and presented with HDR, the image retains a natural film grain texture while bringing considerable life to the vivid colors and clothing, as well as to the blue skies, greenery, beaches, and warm interiors. For a film so dependent on color and bodies occupying carefully arranged spaces, the upgrade is so meaningful.<\/p>\n

Cult Epics also gives the movie considerably more attention than its reputation might suggest. The 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions include the restored uncut feature, Italian and English audio options, improved English subtitles, a new commentary featuring Troy Howarth, Jeremy Richey, Nathaniel Thompson, Eugenio Ercolani and Heather Drain, a 1995 Brass interview, galleries and the trailer. The reversible artwork and illustrated booklet further position the release as part of Cult Epics’ ongoing effort to treat Brass as a filmmaker worth preserving, rather than reducing his career to its most notorious.<\/p>\n

P.O. BOX TINTO BRASS isn’t going to persuade anyone who fundamentally dislikes Brass’ approach to erotic cinema. His fixations are everywhere; subtlety is largely absent, intentionally so, and nine opportunities to explore sexual fantasies inevitably become nine opportunities for the director to remind viewers exactly what interests him. For anyone already on the same page as his other work, this will be a home run; the anthology structure makes this an unusually easygoing tour through those interests. Roccaforte brings personality to the inner-mixed scenes, Ortolani keeps things light, and Brass seems completely comfortable making himself part of the joke. It’s repetitive and shamelessly self-satisfied, though there’s something strangely likable about a filmmaker opening his mail and discovering another excuse to make exactly the kind of movie he wanted to make.<\/p>\n
