They want a mortgage. That ordinary goal makes the nightmare of (0, ∞) hit harder than a story built around revolution ever could. Writer/director Mar Sudac takes eleven minutes, one married couple, and a bureaucratic requirement, then turns this all into one of the most unsettling and unexpectedly hopeful pieces of speculative fiction I’ve seen in some time.

In the near future conceived here, sexuality is no longer something people are permitted to define for themselves. The government has developed the Sx Test, a mandatory medical procedure used to determine sexual orientation for legal purposes. Gus (Cheech Manohar) and Clark (Brandon Wilson) need certification to apply for a mortgage. They’ve built a life together, they’re married, and they know who they are. None of that matters to a system that’s decided lived experience requires verification.

Sudac doesn’t waste valuable time explaining how this world arrived here, but honestly, it’s easier than ever to imagine. That makes the situation more disturbing. The test exists. People wait for it. Medical staff administers it. Forms have been created, procedures established, and consequences attached to noncompliance. Whatever fight might once have occurred over whether such a thing should exist is already over. The bureaucracy has won, and what’s the option when this is your only choice?

Gus and Clark aren’t dragged into a dungeon by uniformed agents. They’re processed. They wait their turn. They willingly answer questions. They remove their clothing when instructed and participate in a degrading procedure because refusing would have material consequences for the future they’re trying to build. Oppression comes with paperwork, fluorescent lighting, appointments, and rules that everyone around them has learned to treat as routine.

Manohar and Wilson are outstanding because neither performance tries to force the importance of what’s happening. Gus and Clark have the comfort of people who have already lived together long enough to develop a private understanding and life with each other. Their relationship feels established before the film asks us to consider what anyone outside it thinks that relationship means.

That intimacy is essential for a story like this to work. The entire premise falls apart if they exist only as symbols in Sudac’s political argument. Instead, they feel like two men with a shared history who happen to be caught inside a ludicrous system. Small gestures and looks between them carry more weight than speeches would. Frustration and confusion sit beside affection, making their marriage something we experience rather than something the screenplay has to defend.

Wilson has an especially effective stillness, while Manohar brings a slightly different feeling that keeps the couple from feeling like this is a role. They don’t need to respond to every indignity in the same way to prove they belong together. That difference becomes increasingly important because (0, ∞) fundamentally rejects the idea that human attraction, identity, and attachment can be reduced to a result that somebody prints on a form. Even the title contains the argument.

In mathematics, (0, ∞) describes an open interval extending from zero toward infinity without including either. Sudac takes that notation and turns it into a perfect expression of everything this government refuses to accept. The system wants categories with definition. The film is interested in everything that remains open.

There’s no shortage of dystopian fiction about governments controlling humans, but Sudac avoids the familiar towering fascist architecture, armed patrols, or giant computer screens. Kayla Hoff’s 16mm cinematography makes the world look and feel all too familiar instead. The texture feels slightly removed from the present without screaming science fiction, creating the uncomfortable impression that this future is adjacent to ours rather than centuries away. This feels like a world that could be our own in 5 to 10 years. That choice also gives the clinical spaces a peculiar warmth that runs counter to what’s happening inside them.

Sudac has described the film as a response to surveillance, forced identification, and
governmental overreach, but (0, ∞) doesn’t necessarily require knowledge of those influences to function. Once the government demands proof of something this personal, whoever controls the definition also controls who qualifies. That’s where the mortgage becomes so important.

A house sounds almost laughably small compared with the larger implications of the Sx Test, yet access is exactly how systems like this acquire force. Gus and Clark don’t need to be imprisoned for noncompliance if refusing the test can simply make something like owning a home out of reach. Housing, benefits, recognition, or financial stability can become pressure points. Rights don’t have to disappear all at once if enough obstacles can be placed between people and the ability to use them.

What happens with Gus and Clark’s results pushes the film beyond a straightforward warning about anti-queer repression. Sudac is asking something more interesting about the desire to categorize human attraction at all. Even labels people willingly choose can describe only part of something complicated. The problem isn’t that the Sx Test produces a wrong answer. The problem is believing there could ever be one answer that grants an institution authority over the people being measured. That idea could easily have turned (0, ∞) into an intellectual exercise. The ending prevents that.

Without spoiling where Sudac takes these eleven minutes, the final portion refuses the hopelessness that usually accompanies dystopian shorts. The system remains frightening, but the film’s view of humanity doesn’t collapse with it. Love survives classification because love was never dependent on classification in the first place. That hope doesn’t feel sentimental. It feels rebellious.

Producer Sayali Upadhye has described joy itself as an act of defiance within the film. That idea is evident in the way the story prioritizes connection over institutional approval. The government may control the forms, eligibility, tests, and categories. It can observe bodies and assign meanings to what it sees. It still can’t occupy the private space between two people who choose each other. There’s remarkable discipline in how little (0, ∞) needs to accomplish all of this. Eleven minutes leave no room for a subplot that exists simply to clarify a theme. Every detail serves the relationship, the world, or their impact. Sudac trusts the audience to recognize the implications without a character stopping to explain why any of this matters.

That restraint strengthens the political argument. The film doesn’t scream about how horrifying its world has become. Everyone has already adjusted enough that shouting would almost feel strange. Watching decent people cooperate with something invasive because ordinary life has been placed on the other side of compliance is far more upsetting.

It’s also why the movie lingers in your mind. The technology is fictional. The instinct behind it isn’t. Governments, institutions, families, religions, corporations, and individuals have spent generations trying to reduce complex human identities to categories that can be recorded, regulated, rewarded, or punished. Sudac’s answer is sitting in the title.

There’s zero at one end and infinity stretching beyond the other, with everything human somewhere in between and no bracket capable of closing around it. (0, ∞) manages to be compelling without sacrificing tenderness, frightening without surrendering to despair, and intellectual without losing sight of the two people at its heart. Eleven minutes shouldn’t feel this complete. Somehow, these do.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
