SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE spends quite a bit of its run time trying to do both. Writer/director Charlie Steeds has no interest in washing away the racism, misogyny, sexual degradation, cruelty, or sheer ugliness that defined some of the era’s most vile movies. He wants the discomfort, the sleaze, the grime, and eventually the cathartic pleasure of watching terrible people receive consequences delivered with considerably more force than restraint. That approach makes this a difficult movie to recommend to a general audience and an easy one to understand on its own terms.

Sherri (Faith McCoy) and Anna Beth (Madison Pankey) are traveling toward Texas when a stop in rural Georgia becomes a true nightmare. A group of backwoods rednecks captures them, and what follows takes the story into exploitation territory. They’re chained, drugged, abused, and treated as possessions by men whose capacity for decency appears to have vanished several generations earlier, likely through intergenerational breeding.

SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE doesn’t ease audiences into that. Steeds deliberately writes his villains as racist, misogynistic, homophobic caricatures whose dialogue is meant to disgust almost as much as their actions. Scot Scurlock and the surrounding cast commit to those characters without trying to uncover hidden humanity beneath them. They’re rotten because the movie needs someone worth hating when the balance of power shifts. The problem is that spending an extended amount of time proving that point can become exhausting.

A significant portion of the film is dedicated to Sherri and Anna Beth’s captivity, and Steeds keeps returning to humiliation as though each extra example will make the villains more despicable than the last. They’re vile from the start. After that’s been established, another insult or act of degradation doesn’t necessarily deepen the horror. Sometimes it simply extends it.

Exploitation cinema frequently worked on the assumption that audiences would endure degradation because revenge was waiting somewhere down the road. SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE consciously revives that structure. Whether the eventual release feels worth the prolonged ugliness will depend heavily on how much patience someone has for the material that precedes it.

Faith McCoy gives the movie a surprising amount of emotion. Sherri is subjected to situations that could easily reduce the character to misery, and McCoy keeps enough fight visible underneath the fear that her later transformation doesn’t feel as though somebody flipped a switch. There’s anger accumulating even when she can’t use it.

Madison Pankey’s Anna Beth plays the role in a different emotional space, helping the two women feel like people rather than interchangeable victims. Their friendship matters because Steeds understands that exploitation without anybody worth caring about quickly becomes empty endurance. He doesn’t always give that relationship enough room, especially once the movie becomes more interested in deformed personalities and escalating cruelty, but McCoy and Pankey supply enough connection to keep the captivity from feeling completely mechanical.

Then Gloria Lynne Henry enters the equation, and SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE becomes a different movie. Henry brings a commanding presence that immediately changes how a scene plays out. The movie has spent so long placing power in the hands of these hillbly white men that introducing a Black woman who refuses to act according to their rules alters more than the action. It changes the temperature.

That shift is where Steeds’ blaxploitation influence becomes most apparent. The earlier portions of the film draw heavily on backwoods horror and women’s-prison brutality. Later stretches embrace revenge, larger-than-life personalities, and violence that begins to push toward the edge. The combination is deliberately unstable. SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE can move from something genuinely unpleasant to something intentionally ridiculous without much warning.

The revenge is entertaining because the preceding material has been so miserable. The transition from brutality to exaggerated action comedy can feel abrupt enough to belong to another movie entirely. Characters who seemed terrifying start looking pathetic. Disturbing violence becomes something to cheer. Steeds is following the emotional mathematics of exploitation cinema, in which accumulated cruelty earns increasingly outrageous retaliation, though the two halves don’t always connect. Once the retaliation begins, restraint is gone.

Chainsaws, guns, blood, violence, and increasingly excessive confrontations turn the last stretch into the movie Steeds seems happiest making. His stated influences make perfect sense here. COFFY and FOXY BROWN inform the revenge attitude, THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE hangs over the rural ugliness, and THE DEVIL’S REJECTS can be felt in the visual treatment and affection for unpleasant personalities.

Modern throwbacks run into trouble when imitation becomes an excuse rather than an artistic choice. Saying an older exploitation movie contained offensive material doesn’t automatically justify it existing in a new film. Steeds at least appears conscious of that problem. The people expressing the film’s ugliest ideas are its villains, and nothing about their treatment suggests the screenplay admires them. That doesn’t make every scene feel comfortable. There are moments where provocation starts feeling like an end in itself, particularly when another humiliating exchange arrives after we’ve already understood exactly who these people are.

Steeds handles his own cinematography, leaning into sunlight, handheld camerawork, warm browns and yellows, worn interiors, old vehicles, and an overall sense of heat and decay. The image isn’t pretending to be a damaged print. No fake scratches are showing that we’re watching a “grindhouse movie.” Instead, the photography borrows from the rough practicality of films that simply didn’t have the resources to look expensive. That works better than artificial aging would have.

The anamorphic framing occasionally produces unexpectedly strong compositions, especially outdoors. Steeds is clearly attracted to a wide frame filled with ugly people doing ugly things in beautiful surroundings. Rural landscapes, battered buildings, dirt roads, and vintage vehicles give the production enough physical character that the limited budget rarely becomes its most noticeable feature.

Practical blood helps a lot! The violence has a handmade messiness that fits the material. Nothing about SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE would benefit from digital carnage. Bodies should look damaged. Rooms should get dirty. Blood should land where somebody will eventually have to clean it.

Scurlock knows exactly what kind of movie he’s appearing in and goes large. That works whenever the material veers toward that exposivness, though it can complicate the earlier scenes where genuine fear is supposed to dominate. Steeds rarely asks anybody playing a villain to understate evil. SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE isn’t confused about what it wants to be. If anything, the problem is how thoroughly it commits to being several varieties of exploitation movie at once. The collision sometimes produces exactly the manic energy Steeds wants. Other times, one influence interrupts another before it settles in.

There’s something admirable about a filmmaker making this without pretending it’s designed for everybody. Steeds has spent years working in low-budget horror, and SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE feels less like an attempt to reach a larger audience than an opportunity to make precisely the kind of movie he wants. That freedom gives it personality even when the results are monstrous. SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE never resolves that tension. Its offensive characters are supposed to offend. Its cruelty exists partly so retaliation can feel righteous. Its tastelessness is intentional. Intent explains the story without automatically making every minute of it effective.

Once Sherri’s nightmare starts pushing toward revenge, the movie becomes considerably more enjoyable. McCoy gets to convert endurance into fury, Henry brings exactly the authority the later sections need, and Steeds finally unleashes the loud, bloody payoff he has been withholding. Getting there is another matter.

For the audience that understands what names like Jack Hill and 70s grindhouse promise, SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE delivers a committed tribute rather than a sanitized imitation. Anyone expecting a modern horror movie wearing retro clothes may find it harder to accept. That divide seems built into the project. Steeds isn’t trying to prove exploitation cinema has become respectable. He’s dragging it back into the room and asking whether anybody still wants to watch. Sometimes I did. Sometimes I wondered whether leaving a little of that dirt in the past might have made the revenge hit harder.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
