Rafael Manuel lets the sun, the cicadas, the sprinklers, and the long stretches of inactivity settle over the movie until the country club starts to feel almost narcotic. Everyone moves as though the heat has slowed the entire property down, even as workers continue trimming, cleaning, serving, carrying, and maintaining an environment designed for people who barely have to lift a finger. It’s a slow movie, sometimes almost aggressively so, and I can understand why that approach will test some viewers. For me, patience pays off more often than it frustrates, because lethargy is part of what Manuel is examining.

Seventeen-year-old Isabel has recently arrived from northern Philippines to work as a tee girl at an expensive golf club outside Manila. Jorrybell Agoto spends much of FILIPIÑANA watching, listening and learning where she is allowed to stand. Isabel’s job itself is an absurdly effective introduction to this world: she places golf balls onto tees so wealthy players don’t have to bend over and do it themselves. Manuel doesn’t need a speech explaining the class structure after that. A young woman sitting inches away from swinging clubs while performing an unnecessary service for richer people says plenty.

The golf course becomes an entire social system in miniature. Members occupy one level, employees another, and nearly every interaction reinforces who is permitted to move freely and who exists to make that freedom possible. The pristine greens initially make the club look peaceful, but FILIPIÑANA gradually changes how those spaces register. Perfect grass requires constant water during a drought. Trees and landscaping conceal what existed before them. People smile because service demands smiling. Even leisure begins to look like another expression of power when so many people are working just to create the illusion that nobody is working at all.

Manuel and cinematographer Xenia Patricia make an especially interesting choice by shooting the film in a boxier 4:3 frame. A golf course would seem made for widescreen photography, especially when so much of its appeal supposedly comes from seeing huge stretches of open land. FILIPIÑANA deliberately denies itself that easy beauty. The narrower image instead emphasizes height, repeatedly placing wealthy members above employees who look up at them. Isabel is frequently contained within doorways, furniture, bodies, and other frames. The club may cover acres, but her portion of it remains remarkably small.

Agoto understands that Isabel doesn’t need to explain everything she’s processing. There’s curiosity in the performance without making her seem naive, and a growing awareness that never turns into an obvious transformation scene. Isabel becomes interested in Dr. Palanca, the country club’s president, and Teroy Guzman plays him with exactly the kind of calm authority that makes the attraction unsettling long before Isabel understands why. He doesn’t need to behave like an overt monster. His position has already arranged the world around him so thoroughly that others anticipate his needs before he asks.

The sound design may be even more effective than the compositions. A golf club striking a ball becomes unnaturally forceful, close enough to a gunshot that every swing begins carrying a tiny threat. Sprinklers hiss across the course. Insects push against the carefully maintained quiet. The noises of employees sweeping, stacking, cutting, and preparing occasionally fall into patterns that make everyday labor seem choreographed. FILIPIÑANA finds something eerie in repetition because repetition is how this place sustains itself. Everyone knows the routine, including those who have never been asked whether they want to participate.

Those synchronized movements also provide some of the movie’s strangest humor. Manuel has a good eye for behavior that becomes ridiculous when observed from enough distance. Employees suddenly perform for arriving guests, wealthy people drift through situations seemingly unaware of their own absurdity, and polite social rituals continue even when something uncomfortable is happening nearby. The comedy never turns FILIPIÑANA into a conventional satire. Most of it arrives with the same delayed quality as everything else, leaving a moment hanging long enough for the humor to become uncomfortable.

Carmen Castellanos gives the film another useful perspective as Clara, an expatriate who can recognize much of the club’s inequality without occupying Isabel’s position inside it. Clara has education, mobility, and access. Her discomfort matters, although recognizing an unjust structure isn’t the same as refusing what that structure offers. Putting Isabel and Clara near one another gives the movie a more complicated argument than simply dividing everyone into oppressors and victims. People occupy different levels within the same hierarchy, and some have enough freedom to object without necessarily risking much.

That becomes important because FILIPIÑANA isn’t really interested in violence as a sudden eruption. It’s interested in all the smaller arrangements that allow violence to become normal. The movie keeps returning to inaction: people sitting, waiting, sleeping, watching, and choosing not to interfere. Golf itself supports that idea because success means taking fewer actions. Isabel’s rebellion consequently takes the form of gestures that might seem almost insignificant elsewhere. She wanders where she isn’t supposed to wander. She tastes something not intended for her. She keeps looking. In a place built around obedience and repetition, curiosity becomes disruptive.

The political history behind all of this is specific to the Philippines, and Manuel doesn’t flatten it into a generic story about rich people being awful. The golf course carries the residue of American colonial influence, while Isabel’s connection to Ilocos quietly brings the country’s political memory into her personal coming of age. FILIPIÑANA is particularly interested in the way history can disappear without actually going away. Landscapes are renovated. Institutions change their appearance. New generations arrive. The structure underneath can remain surprisingly familiar.

There are stretches where I felt the movie had made its point before a scene was ready to let me go. Manuel’s long takes are deliberate, and cutting them down simply to make the film move faster would undermine much of its design. Still, the 100-minute runtime occasionally reveals how little narrative movement there is between some of its strongest observations. A few supporting characters also function more effectively as positions within the club’s hierarchy than as people I came to know. The restraint gives FILIPIÑANA its personality, though it can also create emotional distance when Isabel disappears into the larger design surrounding her.

That distance never completely lost me because there’s so much happening inside the images. The dying vegetation, extravagant food, constant watering, carefully chosen uniforms, and unnaturally immaculate grounds keep returning to the same contradiction. Everything has been made beautiful, and maintaining that beauty requires an enormous amount of labor and denial. The film doesn’t need to underline every symbol because Manuel trusts the environment enough to let objects accumulate meaning as Isabel moves past them.

Knowing that FILIPIÑANA expands Manuel’s 2020 short helps explain why the feature feels unusually assured as a debut. He has clearly spent years thinking about this place, not only as a setting but as a way of organizing ideas about class, colonialism, patriarchy, globalization and memory. Executive producer Jia Zhangke’s involvement makes sense given those concerns, although FILIPIÑANA doesn’t feel like an imitation of someone else’s work. Manuel has built a visual and sonic language specific enough that the movie announces its personality quickly and rarely compromises it. The same stubbornness responsible for the occasional drag is also responsible for most of what makes the film memorable.

FILIPIÑANA asks for patience, and I don’t think every stretch of that patience is rewarded equally. There were moments when the stillness began to feel less revealing and more imposed, especially once I understood the rhythms of the club and the inequalities Manuel was exposing. The movie ultimately earns its deliberate pace because Isabel’s awakening needs that surrounding inertia. She lives in a place where nearly everyone has learned how to remain in position, accept the routine, and keep the machinery running. Watching one young woman begin to notice the machinery is quiet by design. The possibility that she might stop cooperating with it carries the noise.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
