RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>When you start a horror\/comedy, the last thing you’re expecting is solid song, but SWEET MEATS flips that idea on its head. A cannibal horror comedy released by Troma can get away with a lot once the audience understands exactly what kind of movie it is, and musical numbers could easily have been another excuse for intentionally bad jokes. Writer\/director\/star Ricky Glore goes in the opposite direction. The lyrics are ridiculous when they need to be, but there’s enough genuine effort behind the music that some of these songs stick around after the blood and body parts have been forgotten.<\/p>\n

\n

That sincerity is important because SWEET MEATS could have become exhausting quickly. Glore stars as Bobby Sweet, a country singer whose name eventually becomes synonymous with a successful restaurant business. The restaurant has a secret behind its menu that probably won’t surprise anybody who has ever watched a horror movie involving suspiciously delicious meat. Glore isn’t building the movie around the revelation. He’s interested in the personalities, family dynamics, bad decisions, and escalating insanity that allow something this absurd to happen in the first place.<\/p>\n

That gives SWEET MEATS a slightly different personality than the nonstop splatter comedy its advertising might suggest. Sure, there’s blood, cannibalism, and plenty of deliberately cheap humor. The movie spends a surprising amount of time hanging around with Bobby and the Gruoch family before completely turning them loose. Timmy H. Barron plays Jerry Gruoch with a fantastic cluelessness, while Eileen Earnest has considerably more menace behind Laddie Gruoch. They’re somewhat generic stereotypes of characters without becoming interchangeable cartoons, which matters when so much of the comedy depends on watching people accept increasingly stupid circumstances as though they’re perfectly reasonable.<\/p>\n

Glore understands the kind of character Bobby needs to be. If he were just the expected monster, it would eliminate a lot of the joke. Instead, Bobby carries himself with the cheerful confidence of a country entertainer who stumbled into something considerably darker than the image he projects. There’s an innocence to parts of the performance that makes the more grotesque material funnier. Glore wrote, directed and starred in the movie, and Bobby feels particularly suited to his timing. He knows when to make himself ridiculous without constantly giving away the punch line.<\/p>\n

SWEET MEATS also has a stronger sense of place than many movies working with similar resources. Filming in and around Kentucky and Ohio, including at Bobby Mackey's in Wilder, Kentucky, gives the production a real sense of texture. The locations don't feel like empty rooms dressed up for individual scenes. Bars, kitchens, restaurants and performance spaces all belong to the same slightly frimish world. That helps sell the 1970s-flavored country aesthetic without constantly reminding us what it's referencing.<\/p>\n

The musical sequences give Glore permission to jump away from conventional storytelling, change the feeling in the room, and occasionally push the movie into something closer to a deranged country music video. It shouldn’t fit as well as it does with cannibal comedy, yet the combination becomes the movie’s identity. Removing the music would leave behind a familiar story about unsuspecting customers eating something they probably shouldn’t. The songs are what keep SWEET MEATS from feeling like another variation on a joke horror has been making for decades.<\/p>\n

At 101 minutes, SWEET MEATS asks more of its premise than it can always deliver. The setup has an easygoing rhythm that initially works in its favor, particularly because Glore wants time with these characters before everything gets ridiculous. Eventually, that patience starts working against the movie. There are stretches where the next major twist feels obvious long before the story gets there, and a shorter edit could have preserved the same personality while giving the comedy more momentum.<\/p>\n

The horror side is similarly uneven. There are some amusing practical effects, and Glore clearly understands that fake blood is part of the attraction. The movie isn't the nonstop gore showcase its title and Troma association might lead someone to expect. That isn't automatically a weakness. The problem is that once SWEET MEATS begins increasing the body count, there are moments when the setups promise something crazier than the eventual payoff. A movie this proudly tasteless benefits from going all the way whenever it decides to.<\/p>\n

Comedy produces the expected hit-and-miss ratio too. Some jokes land because the performers commit to them without trying too hard. Others hang around after the laugh has already passed. That is part of the movie's handmade personality, though it doesn't excuse every indulgence. There are scenes where an additional trim or two would have helped enormously, particularly during the middle portion when the story has established its rules but hasn't reached that final push toward unbridled chaos.<\/p>\n

None of that erases how much personality Glore gets onto the screen. SWEET MEATS doesn't feel embarrassed by its limitations, nor does it use low-budget filmmaking as an excuse to stop trying. The songs have been written and performed with care. The cast understands the strange tone. The locations give it character. The practical effects are allowed to remain tactile and messy. Even the ideas that don't quite all come together seem to have been attempted because somebody thought they would be fun, rather than because they filled a few more pages of the screenplay.<\/p>\n

Finding a home at Troma makes perfect sense. SWEET MEATS shares the company's affection for filmmakers willing to make something strange, unrefined, and personal without sanding away everything that could alienate a mainstream audience. Lloyd Kaufman's involvement provides the expected connection, but Glore's movie doesn't need to borrow Troma's identity. It already has enough of its own. The country music alone sets it apart from most of the company's catalog, and combining it with the restaurant storyline creates a specific kind of Southern-fried absurdity.<\/p>\n

The Blu-ray is also particularly well-suited to a production like this because the supplements provide considerably more than the feature alone would have. Along with a commentary track, the disc includes THE GRIND making-of feature, EVOLUTION OF A SONG: WRITING THE MUSIC OF SWEET MEATS, a feature-length cast and crew interview, and additional Tromatic extras. The music feature is an especially logical inclusion considering how much the songs contribute to the finished movie. For an independent production where the process is part of the appeal, getting this much behind-the-scenes material adds real value to the release.<\/p>\n

SWEET MEATS is messy, longer than it needs to be, and not nearly as outrageous as it sometimes threatens to become. It's also funny, oddly likable, and committed to a combination of country music and cannibalism that shouldn't fit together nearly as comfortably as it does. The rough spots are easy to see, but so is the work behind them. Sometimes that's enough to make an imperfect movie considerably easier to enjoy.<\/p>\n
