RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>GRADUATION DAY announces its personality before anyone has even been murdered. Herb Freed cuts the opening track meet into a barrage of runners, screaming spectators, pounding music, stopwatches, and increasingly frantic close-ups as Laura Ramstead pushes herself toward the finish line. She wins the race and promptly dies, establishing both the motive behind everything that follows and the movie's strange fascination with turning athletic competition into something threatening. The editing is excessive, occasionally ridiculous, and immediately more interesting than the straightforward slasher movie that could have been made from the same story.<\/p>\n

That willingness to get weird helps GRADUATION DAY survive a crowded field. Released in 1981, it arrived when seemingly every holiday, school event, and teenage gathering was becoming an excuse to put somebody behind a mask and start eliminating young people. Freed doesn't reinvent that formula, and several sections barely disguise how closely the movie follows it. What sets this one apart is how often ordinary slasher mechanics are interrupted by odd editing choices, unexpectedly long musical sequences, strange humor, and murder scenes built around the victims' athletic identities.<\/p>\n

Laura's sister Anne, played by Patch Mackenzie, returns home after Laura's death and immediately becomes one of several possible suspects when members of the track team begin disappearing. Coach Michaels, played by Christopher George, has plenty of reasons to attract suspicion after pushing Laura so aggressively. Laura's grieving boyfriend, Kevin, is another possibility, and the school is populated with enough unpleasant adults and suspicious characters to keep the movie pointing fingers in different directions. The killer adds a black glove, fencing mask, and stopwatch to the routine, timing victims before crossing their faces off a team photograph.<\/p>\n

The stopwatch is one of those simple ideas that gives the killer more identity than the costume alone ever could. Laura died after being pushed to complete a race in a specific time, so the repeated timing of the murders turns the track team's obsession with performance into a ritual. GRADUATION DAY never develops that idea with much psychological depth, but it doesn't really have to. Watching that second hand move creates an effective little warning that somebody's about to have a very bad afternoon.<\/p>\n

Freed and editor Martin Jay Sadoff aren't particularly interested in making those moments elegant. The movie sometimes cuts so aggressively that it resembles someone discovering every possible thing an editing room can do and refusing to choose among them. Rapid flashes, repeated images, and abrupt transitions can make a scene feel almost frantic even when very little is happening. It occasionally becomes distracting, although the same approach gives GRADUATION DAY an identity that many technically smoother period slashers never found.<\/p>\n

The murders operate the same way. Some are disappointingly brief or lighter on gore than the setup suggests, while others are so absurdly tailored to the victim that they become difficult to forget. A pole vaulter being directed toward a deadly landing is exactly the sort of mean little visual joke an athletics-based slasher should attempt. Another kill involving a football and a weapon ignores plausibility so completely that questioning the logistics would miss half the fun.<\/p>\n

These moments make the slower sections more frustrating because GRADUATION DAY frequently wanders away from its strongest material. Anne initially appears positioned to guide us through the mystery, only to disappear for stretches while the movie spends time with students, faculty, and suspects who aren't equally interesting. The abundance of possible killers helps the mystery, but it comes at the cost of having somebody worth becoming genuinely invested in. Anne has enough going on that keeping her closer to the center would have given the story a stronger anchor.<\/p>\n

Mackenzie handles the role with an appealing directness whenever the film remembers to use her. Anne arrives already dealing with grief and quickly realizes something about the school and Laura's death doesn't sit right, giving her reasons to investigate that don't require the usual horror-movie curiosity. Her military background also keeps her from feeling helpless once things turn dangerous. GRADUATION DAY could have done much more with her, which makes the stretches where she fades into the ensemble stand out even more.<\/p>\n

Christopher George has no such problem making an impression. Coach Michaels is aggressive enough to look guilty even when he's just standing around, and George gives the character the kind of oversized authority that fits the movie better than a restrained performance would. Michaels has built his identity around winning, and Laura's death hangs over him even before the murders start making his behavior look increasingly suspicious.<\/p>\n

The supporting cast has become more interesting with time simply because of who appears in it. Linnea Quigley shows up early in her horror career as Dolores and already has the screen presence that would eventually make her one of the genre's recognizable faces. Vanna White appears several years before WHEEL OF FORTUNE made her famous, although viewers coming specifically to see her should temper expectations because it's a small role. Michael Pataki, E.J. Peaker and E. Danny Murphy contribute to the collection of personalities that make the school feel populated even when the movie doesn't know what to do with all of them.<\/p>\n

Then there's the music. GRADUATION DAY doesn't simply stop for a song and move on; it sometimes behaves as if the slasher has been temporarily interrupted by an entirely different movie. Felony's extended performance during the roller-skating sequence lasts long enough to become funny in principle, especially because Freed continues to cut between the music and the danger unfolding elsewhere. The sequence should probably destroy the momentum, yet its excess is so specific to this movie that cutting it down might make GRADUATION DAY less memorable.<\/p>\n

That's the contradiction running through much of the film. The parts that could easily be called mistakes are often the same ones that keep it from disappearing into the massive pile of early-'80s slashers. The editing is too much, the tonal changes are awkward, the character focus wanders, and several scenes continue longer than necessary. A tighter, more controlled version would almost certainly be better made, but it might also be harder to remember.<\/p>\n

The mystery does enough to keep several suspects viable without becoming the film's strongest feature. Freed regularly redirects attention toward whichever character currently seems capable of murder, and some of those red herrings are more convincing than others. Once everything is revealed, the explanation fits the revenge structure the movie has been building around Laura's death. However, GRADUATION DAY never achieves the satisfying clockwork construction of a great whodunit. This remains a body-count movie first, with the mystery there to keep us guessing between attacks.<\/p>\n

Its $250,000 production budget is visible throughout, although the limitations aren't fatal. The school setting provides plenty of usable locations, the track-and-field theme gives the killer a built-in group of victims, and the filmmakers understand that an inexpensive horror movie benefits from finding one or two images people will remember. The fencing mask, stopwatch, and team photo accomplish that without requiring elaborate effects.<\/p>\n

Troma's Tromatic Special Edition brings the film back to Blu-ray with a package built largely around its cult history. The disc includes a classic Lloyd Kaufman introduction, interviews with Mackenzie, Freed, producer David Baughn, editor Martin Jay Sadoff, and Quigley, along with commentaries featuring Baughn and the hosts of THE HYSTERIA CONTINUES. Those supplements are especially useful for a movie whose production choices can generate as many questions as the identity of its killer.<\/p>\n

There's also something fitting about GRADUATION DAY remaining associated with Troma. The movie predates much of what audiences now immediately associate with the company. Still, its low-budget resourcefulness, willingness to be tacky and resistance to conventional good taste fit comfortably within that history. The Tromatic Special Edition isn't trying to transform the film into some neglected horror classic. It gives an already established cult slasher another opportunity to be appreciated for exactly how strange it is.<\/p>\n

GRADUATION DAY sits comfortably in the middle of the slasher pack for me. It isn't scary enough, bloody enough, or tightly constructed enough to challenge the best films from the genre's early-'80s explosion, and its uneven focus keeps the story from building the tension it needs. The oddball choices keep pulling it back from mediocrity, though, whether that means another frantic editing experiment, a ridiculous murder, Christopher George glaring at someone, or a musical performance that seems determined to become its own short film. There are better slashers from 1981, but there aren't many that make quite the same collection of decisions.<\/p>\n
