RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>There’s a cruelty that feels so real about somehow being lonely in a city filled with millions of people. LOVERS IN THE BLUE NIGHT spends much of its runtime trying to come to terms with that contradiction, following people who are constantly surrounded by people, noise, traffic, work, and obligation while struggling to find anyone who actually sees them. Writer\/director Anuparna Roy doesn’t treat loneliness as some abstract emotion here. It’s tied to money, sexuality, caste, marriage, migration, and the compromises people make when simply getting through another day has already demanded every ounce of their being.<\/p>\n

\n

Everyone in this story wants some version of love, although being wanted might be the more accurate description of what they’re searching for. Ameena (Neelima Sharma) wants affection from a husband who can’t give it to her. Karim (Pritam Pilania) wants the freedom to desire another man without the consequences that freedom could bring. Sukka (Bhushan Shimpi) seeks intimacy as he tries to escape the limits imposed on him by his circumstances. Even Omran (Jatin Sarin), whose work makes him an unlikely candidate for sympathy, reveals a hunger for connection once somebody mistakenly allows him to imagine himself as something different.<\/p>\n

Roy lets those desires crash into each other instead of just arranging them into a collection of romantic pairings. Karim and Ameena are married, though their relationship is more rooted in obligation and shared history than in physical affection. They migrated from a village destroyed by flooding, and Karim’s decision to marry Ameena came from compassion and responsibility rather than desire. That may have provided them with a form of survival, but survival eventually becomes a painfully low standard for two people who want lives of their own.<\/p>\n

Karim’s attraction to Sukka gives the film a dangerous relationship because neither man has the luxury of approaching desire casually. Pritam Pilania plays Karim with a quietness that can seem passive until you begin to notice how constantly he’s calculating. He isn’t just hiding an affair; he’s protecting a life built around concealment, expectations, and the marriage that allows him to present one version of himself to the world. His scenes with Bhushan Shimpi carry the anxiety of men who know wanting something doesn’t mean they’re free to have it.<\/p>\n

Sukka brings another type of complexity to that relationship. He’s a petty thief attempting to pull himself out of the position handed to him, and his desire for Karim can’t be separated from his own need for acceptance. Roy doesn’t flatten the relationship into a straightforward forbidden romance where society is the only obstacle. These are men carrying their own fears, selfishness, and survival instincts, which means tenderness can coexist with choices that hurt someone else.<\/p>\n

Ameena could easily have become collateral damage in Karim’s story, and LOVERS IN THE BLUE NIGHT is much better because Roy refuses to leave her there. Neelima Sharma gives the film a genuinely vulnerable performance, making Ameena’s need for affection painful without turning her into someone defined by rejection. She holds onto mysterious love letters because they offer something her actual life doesn’t. A type of evidence that somebody thought about her, noticed her, and took the time to put those feelings into words.<\/p>\n

The misunderstanding involving Omran gives part of the film an almost innocent feel. Ameena becomes convinced that he wrote the letters, while Omran begins responding to the affection she directs toward him even though its foundation isn’t what she believes. Jatin Sarin doesn’t transform Omran into a perfect man waiting to be rescued by love. His tenderness feels more uncertain than that, as though being seen differently by another person for a brief moment allows him to wonder whether he might actually be different.<\/p>\n

Roy’s storytelling becomes especially interesting here because nearly every relationship is built around something with missing pieces. Somebody doesn’t know the truth, somebody can’t say what they really want, somebody is accepting a substitute for what they need, or somebody understands that honesty carries consequences they may not survive. The characters aren’t simply struggling to communicate. Their circumstances have taught them that complete honesty is sometimes a privilege.<\/p>\n

LOVERS IN THE BLUE NIGHT requires patience with how loosely these lives move around one another. Roy is more interested in accumulation than in momentum, allowing glances, conversations, encounters, and stretches of existence to gradually shape the movie's emotion. There are some passages where that restraint begins feeling less revealing than repetitive, especially once the basic loneliness of each character has been established. A little more action in those stretches could have kept the quietness from occasionally sliding into distance. It would work against the story not to share these aspects in this way.<\/p>\n

The interconnected framework isn’t always as strong when viewed from every direction. Ameena and Karim have the advantage of a shared history that adds more complicated ways of viewing their relationship. At the same time, other connections sometimes take longer to reach comparable depth. Some characters are inevitably better understood than others by the end, which can make the film feel less like four equally developed lives and more like two particularly strong stories drawing other people into their orbit. That imbalance never breaks the film, though it does keep certain emotional turns from landing with the same force. It’s an interesting way to experience these stories through a restricted lens.<\/p>\n

Mumbai itself helps hold those pieces together. Roy doesn’t use the city merely as some intriguing setting or reduce it to a symbol of misery. The crowds and activity create a strange contrast with people who exist at the edges of everything around them, and the nighttime setting allows desires to emerge after lives built around work and necessity have, at least for now, seemed to loosen their grip. There’s romance in that darkness, though there’s danger there too.<\/p>\n

Roy’s connection to the material adds another layer to the story without requiring audiences to know anything about its origins. Ameena's character grew and evolved from memories of a woman Roy knew as a child. The filmmaker’s own experiences as a migrant helped shape her understanding of people seeking a place in an enormous city. That shows in how rarely these characters seem designed to represent an issue. Their identities affect everything about their possibilities, but they’re allowed to be contradictory people before they become arguments about class, sexuality, caste, or migration.<\/p>\n

That is ultimately what makes LOVERS IN THE BLUE NIGHT linger. The film understands that wanting love can sound almost indulgent when food, money, housing, safety, and acceptance aren’t guaranteed, and then spends nearly two hours arguing that this is exactly why love matters so much. These people have already learned how to survive. What they haven’t learned is whether they’re allowed to want anything beyond it, and Roy finds something both beautiful and painful in watching them try.<\/p>\n
