The tournament, the training, the rock music, the colorful fighters, and even the ridiculously straightforward motivation all belong to a particular era of martial arts movies. Director Taim M. Adams isn't trying to reinvent any of that, and the movie is probably more enjoyable once you realize he has absolutely no interest in doing so.

Mathis Landwehr plays Joe, a martial artist who has just finished serving four years in prison after taking the fall for a drug bust involving his wife. Coming home doesn't exactly go according to plan. He discovers that he has a son he’s never met, his former wife has moved on, and the boy is seriously ill and needs an operation that Joe has no way of paying for. That’s a familiar setup, but it works well enough.

Conveniently, a martial arts tournament offers $100,000 to the winner. You can probably figure out where things are going from there, and LION FIST doesn't waste much time pretending otherwise. Joe needs money, Joe knows how to fight, and there are a bunch of increasingly dangerous people waiting to fight him before he can collect it.

Sean David Lowe and Keith W. Strandberg's screenplay piles on enough personal issues to give Joe a reason to enter the tournament, then mostly gets out of the way once the fighting becomes the priority. Anyone looking for complicated plotting or surprising character turns has definitely wandered into the wrong arena. The irony is, there’s something almost refreshing about the 1+1=2 format we get here.

That simplicity also creates some of the movie's bigger problems. The emotional aspects involving Joe and his son are meant to lend everything extra importance, but they never become as touching as the story needs them to be. The situation is sad because the movie tells us it's sad, while the relationships around it never get enough time to become more than motivation for the next step in Joe's journey.

Landwehr handles the physical side a lot better. He looks more than comfortable once fists start flying, and LION FIST wisely gives him enough room to actually play this out rather than chopping every fight into a pile of quick edits. Choreographer Mike Möller understands that the audience for a movie like this wants to see the people involved doing martial arts, and the action is easily the reason to stick around.

Plenty of modern action movies bury talented performers under frantic editing, digital effects, or cameras that won't sit still long enough to show what anyone is doing. LION FIST keeps things focused and shocking, letting us see the fights for what they are, letting kicks connect, and combinations connect in a way that feels much closer to the movies it's trying to imitate.

The tournament format obviously helps. Once Joe starts working his way through various opponents, the movie can introduce fighters with different looks and styles without needing elaborate reasons for their existence. Some are basically there to walk into the ring, look intimidating, and give Joe another obstacle, and that's completely fine for this kind of movie.

Yanlong Li as Grandmaster Wu provides the required training for the story, another ingredient that LION FIST embraces without embarrassment. The film doesn't try to disguise how familiar this all feels. Joe needs to become better, Wu needs to teach him, and eventually all that work needs to pay off when somebody considerably larger decides to rearrange Joe's face.

Gary Daniels, Kurt McKinney, and Keith Cooke aren't random casting choices; they're names aimed directly at the people who spent years watching martial arts movies on VHS and cable TV. Having them in this connects LION FIST to the genre it's celebrating, rather than making the movie feel like a filmmaker trying to imitate something from before his time.

Their presence doesn't magically improve the experience, though. Some performances are noticeably more comfortable than others, and dialogue occasionally has the stiff delivery you might expect from a low-budget action production built around fighters rather than dramatic actors. The movie survives because nobody came to LION FIST expecting long conversations about the human condition, although a few scenes certainly could've used another pass in the editing bay.

The pacing is also uneven before the tournament really takes over. Crime components, police characters, family struggles, and other pieces move around Joe, and not all of them feel necessary. A leaner path to the main attraction could've helped, because the movie becomes noticeably more confident whenever it stops worrying about plot mechanics and lets people fight.

Brice Akuesson brings the physical presence the movie needs in its opposition. LION FIST understands that tournament movies become more entertaining when you can take one look at an opponent and immediately think, "Well, this is going to hurt." That kind of storytelling isn't sophisticated, but it has worked for decades for a reason.

The commitment to the retro approach is why I can forgive some things here that I'd have a harder time overlooking in a movie with different ambitions. LION FIST is cheesy. The story is predictable, several characters are barely characters at all, the emotion can feel forced, and there isn't a moment when I seriously wondered whether Joe would eventually find himself standing across from exactly the kind of opponent these movies always save for the end.

None of that means the film gets a free pass just because they're intentionally making a throwback. Nostalgia can explain a cliché without necessarily making it entertaining, and there are places where LION FIST crosses that line. The movie occasionally feels like it's checking off boxes of a formula rather than finding a new reason to use them. The difference is that the people making it clearly care about this stuff. This doesn't feel like someone making fun of inexpensive martial arts movies or treating their limitations as the joke. Adams approaches the material seriously enough that the occasional silliness comes naturally, and that makes the movie much easier to enjoy.

LION FIST isn't going to bring tournament movies back into the mainstream; that was never the point. It's a modest action movie made for viewers who miss the days when a hero could solve an impossible problem by finding a mysterious fighting competition, training with a master, and kicking increasingly dangerous strangers until somebody handed him a check. It may not break the mold, but it still has a fun time getting to that final knockout.

The story surrounding the fights is thin, and there are enough rough edges to keep the movie from becoming an all-time classic. Once the first punch is thrown, though, LION FIST usually delivers what it came here to do. If the names Gary Daniels, Kurt McKinney, and Keith Cooke mean something to you, there's a good chance you already know whether that's enough.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
