That becomes one of the most revealing parts of BUCKS COUNTY, USA, a five-part docuseries about a purple county in Pennsylvania where arguments over schools grow into something much larger, uglier, and increasingly personal.

Filmed over several years, the series follows Bucks County through fights involving COVID-era school policies, curriculum, books, LGBTQIA2S+ issues, parental rights, school board elections, and the political identities attached to all of them. These aren’t disagreements occurring at some distant level of government. They involve neighbors, teachers, parents, students, friends, and people who occasionally have to see each other again after saying terrible things about one another in public. You can see the seeds of far-right extremist groups like “Moms for Liberty” in this story. The vitriol, anger, blind faith, and controlling narratives have infected the school boards there.

Directors Robert May and Barry Levinson resist approaching those people as one-dimensional political categories. BUCKS COUNTY, USA allows people enough time to explain what they believe, why they believe it, and how they think they reached that position. Sometimes that patience gives the series a genuine understanding. Other times it simply gives someone enough rope to reveal contradictions that an aggressive interviewer probably couldn’t expose as effectively.

That willingness to listen is without a doubt a strength, but it's also a pretty big problem. There’s real value in understanding why somebody believes something without treating them as stupid or evil, particularly when political conversation in the present day seems designed around finding the quickest possible reason to dismiss or yell at another person. Understanding an argument isn’t the same thing as validating it, and the documentary occasionally gets dangerously close to confusing those ideas. Giving a stage to people who try to argue that proven misinformation, hatred, or intentional ignorance is fact is a very dangerous game.

Throughout these disputes, fact-checking these claims could have gone a long way. Treating two positions with equality doesn’t automatically mean the facts support them, yet BUCKS COUNTY, USA can sometimes seem reluctant to make that distinction. The filmmakers clearly want participants to feel heard, which makes sense given the extraordinary access they maintained. At times, though, a little more contextual pushback (even after the fact, on screen) would have made the series considerably stronger.

It becomes especially noticeable because so many participants believe they’re doing this to protect children. People who fundamentally disagree about almost everything still return to the same justification, insisting their actions are necessary for students' well-being. The series gradually exposes how strange that becomes when the students themselves speak out against this, and the adults remain far more interested in winning the argument.

That’s where Evianne Casey and Vanessa Martino become so important. The two teenagers come from families with very different political beliefs yet remain close friends, providing a clear contrast to the adults around them. Their friendship could easily have been turned into a painfully obvious “why can’t everyone just get along?” lesson. The series is more interesting when it avoids making them responsible for solving problems created by people decades older than they are.

The girls don’t need to represent some magical solution to political polarization. What matters is their ability to disagree without deciding that disagreement makes the other person worthless. Their relationship becomes increasingly important because that basic level of respect starts to look almost radical next to adults who have turned school board meetings, social media, elections, and everyday conversations into ideological combat.

I do wish BUCKS COUNTY, USA spent more time showing us their friendship beyond its usefulness to the documentary’s subject. Evi and Vanessa are presented as the emotional foundation of the series, but at times they feel more like a framing device while the adults dominate the story. More understanding of how they mediate their differences, where disagreements become a struggle, and whether they avoid certain subjects would have added another piece to what is already the documentary’s most promising viewpoint.

The student discussions are often more revealing than anything the adults have to offer. Once young people are given room to explain what it’s like watching adults conduct political warfare supposedly on their behalf, the entire conversation changes. Those conversations aren’t void of politics or moderated, either. They have their own opinions, fears, and principles. Yet, several seem far more willing than the adults to recognize that another person can disagree without becoming an enemy.

The series also shows how quickly local politics stops feeling local. A school board race might sound insignificant compared with a presidential election, but the people involved clearly don’t see it that way. Money, the same buzzwords from the national political stage, organized movements, social media outrage, and larger ideological battles leak down to the neighborhood level until decisions about schools become stand-ins for arguments about what America itself is supposed to be.

Watching that transformation over five episodes is fascinating and exhausting. BUCKS COUNTY, USA documents people becoming so entrenched in defending their own side that even conversations organized around finding common ground can collapse almost immediately. One person listens long enough to prep a response, another hears an accusation that wasn’t actually made, and suddenly everyone is back exactly where they started.

Nearly five hours lets May and Levinson follow these conflicts across several years, but it also means variations of the same ideological standoff begin to accumulate. A tighter edit could have preserved the scope while giving individual confrontations more impact, particularly once the audience understands how deeply these divisions have settled into the community.

There’s something powerful about the amount of time spent observing rather than giving conclusions. BUCKS COUNTY, USA doesn’t pretend political disagreement can disappear because two people sit down together and discover they both like the same restaurant. Some conversations don’t go anywhere. Sometimes people remain convinced they’re the only ones who are correct. Some attempts at understanding reveal that basic agreement on facts may be required before meaningful compromise is even possible.

That makes the documentary’s optimism more complicated than it initially appears. Listening matters, compassion matters, and recognizing somebody else’s humanity certainly matters, but none of those things eliminate the need to challenge bad information or harmful ideas. Civility is valuable, but civility without accountability can become another way to avoid the harder questions.

BUCKS COUNTY, USA is strongest when it recognizes that and lets us watch people struggle with it. This one Pennsylvania county can’t explain everything that has happened to American political conversation, the dire nosedive it's taken since the height of COVID, and Evi and Vanessa shouldn’t be expected to cure it. What their friendship does provide is something much smaller and probably more useful. It’s evidence that disagreement doesn’t automatically require contempt.

For a documentary about people talking, the most revealing moments often come from seeing who can actually listen. BUCKS COUNTY, USA doesn’t solve the division it documents, and occasionally its determination to understand everybody prevents it from challenging anybody strongly enough. It does, however, make an increasingly uncomfortable point about what younger generations are learning from the adults claiming to protect them, and whether winning every argument is worth what we’re teaching them in the process.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
