RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Gal Dove has already won. That's what makes SEXY BEAST such an effective crime movie before most of the crime even begins. He isn't chasing money, power, respect, or one enormous score that will finally allow him to retire. He already retired, moved to Spain, married a woman he genuinely loves, and spends his days baking beneath the sun beside a swimming pool. The criminal life isn't something he's dreaming about escaping. He escaped it. Then Don Logan shows up.<\/p>\n

\n

Jonathan Glazer understands that those two facts are enough to build nearly an entire movie around. The threat isn't really whether Gal will agree to participate in another job. It's whether someone from his old life can refuse to accept that Gal belongs to him now. Don treats the word "no" as an insult, an inconvenience, and eventually something approaching betrayal. What follows feels less like a recruitment attempt than an extended home invasion conducted primarily through conversation.<\/p>\n

Ben Kingsley is terrifying as Don, although reducing the performance to anger misses how strange he makes the character. Don doesn't simply explode. He needles, repeats himself, changes direction, sits perfectly still, suddenly becomes loud, makes accusations, rewrites conversations that happened seconds earlier, and forces everyone around him to calculate whether the next sentence will set him off. His unpredictability becomes more unsettling than brute force could ever be.<\/p>\n

Kingsley's size actually makes the performance more effective. Don doesn't walk into Gal's villa looking like the obvious physical threat in the room, especially opposite Ray Winstone. It doesn't matter. Within minutes, the entire house seems to be adjusting itself around him. People choose words carefully. Silences become uncomfortable. Gal starts behaving less like a retired criminal and more like someone who remembers exactly why this particular man was worth fearing.<\/p>\n

The performance earned Kingsley an Academy Award nomination, and it's easy to understand why. There's also a danger in allowing Don Logan to dominate every conversation about SEXY BEAST, because Winstone is doing something equally important at the other end of their conflict. Gal isn't cowardly, weak, or suddenly incapable of handling himself. He's a man who has discovered something valuable enough that he doesn't want to gamble with it anymore.<\/p>\n

That gives Winstone's performance an unexpected tenderness. His relationship with Deedee, played by Amanda Redman, isn't treated as window dressing between gangster scenes. Gal adores her. Their life together might be excessive in its sun-soaked comfort, but their affection feels completely sincere, and that changes the stakes of everything Don brings into their home.<\/p>\n

It also separates SEXY BEAST from countless crime stories built around men who secretly miss the excitement. Gal doesn't stare longingly at his former life. He doesn't need Don to remind him he still has something to prove. The job represents obligation, fear, and the possibility of losing everything he actually wants. Retirement isn't a temporary fantasy here. It's Gal's chosen identity, and Don's refusal to respect it is what makes him such a violation.<\/p>\n

Glazer surrounds that relatively simple conflict with filmmaking that's considerably stranger than the story requires. The Spanish sun feels almost oppressive. The opening stretches relaxation until it becomes absurd, making Gal's paradise feel so complete that disruption seems inevitable. Dream imagery, aggressive editing, unusual transitions, and sudden bursts of surrealism keep reminding us that this isn't interested in becoming a straightforward British gangster picture.<\/p>\n

Some of those flourishes work better than others. At times, Glazer's visual imagination seems determined to announce itself, and a few of the more abstract images don't carry the same weight as the human confrontation happening around them. For a first feature, though, the confidence is remarkable. You can see a director already interested in discomfort, bodies, behavior, strange visual associations, and the tension created when familiar environments stop behaving normally.<\/p>\n

The movie also has a wicked sense of humor that prevents Don's arrival from becoming unbearably grim. Much of that comedy comes from language and repetition rather than conventional punchlines. Don can be horrifying and ridiculous within the same exchange, sometimes because his fury has become so disproportionate that everyone else seems temporarily trapped inside somebody else's breakdown.<\/p>\n

The screenplay by Louis Mellis and David Scinto understands how people with long histories communicate. Characters don't constantly stop to explain who everybody is or why a name matters. Reactions fill in those gaps. You understand a great deal about Don before he arrives simply by watching what happens to the room whenever someone mentions him.<\/p>\n

Ian McShane provides another fascinating contrast as Teddy Bass. Where Don consumes every inch of space available to him, Teddy doesn't need to. McShane barely has to raise his temperature for the threat to register, and his restraint suggests an entirely different kind of power. Don is frightening because nobody knows what he'll do next. Teddy is frightening because he appears to know exactly what he's doing.<\/p>\n

That shift also keeps the movie from collapsing once its most explosive personality is no longer controlling every scene. SEXY BEAST becomes colder as it moves deeper into the criminal world, and Gal suddenly looks even further removed from the person relaxing beside that swimming pool. Winstone handles the transition without changing the character into an action hero. Gal survives by reading people, understanding the rules, and remembering a life he'd rather leave behind.<\/p>\n

At only 89 minutes, the film doesn't waste much time, although the back half can't completely match the suffocating pressure of Don's extended visit. The earlier confrontation is simply too good. Once that particular tension breaks, the actual criminal mechanics almost feel secondary, which is probably why SEXY BEAST is remembered more for a man saying no to a job than for the job itself.<\/p>\n

Second Sight's 2026 release gives the film an appropriately substantial treatment. The new 4K restoration comes from the original camera negative and was supervised and approved by Glazer, with Dolby Vision on the UHD. New interviews with Winstone, Kingsley, McShane, producer Jeremy Thomas, and editor Sam Sneade are joined by a new commentary, a video essay focused on Don Logan, behind-the-scenes material, location footage, and archival interviews.<\/p>\n

The Limited Edition goes considerably further with a 160-page hardback book and seven art cards inside a rigid slipcase featuring new Neil Kellerhouse artwork. It's an unusually loaded package for a movie whose reputation has only strengthened with time, especially now that Glazer's later work makes it easier to see how many of his interests were already sitting inside this first feature.<\/p>\n

SEXY BEAST ultimately isn't a great gangster movie because of its heist. It's great because it captures how frightening it can be when you've finally built the life you wanted, and someone arrives to tell you your past still owns part of it. Kingsley gets the loudest role and makes Don Logan nearly impossible to forget, but Winstone gives that performance something to push against. Without Gal's genuine happiness, Don is simply a lunatic. With it, he becomes a threat to something worth protecting.<\/p>\n

At 4 out of 5, the film remains sharp, strange, funny, nasty, and far more emotionally grounded than its reputation as the Ben Kingsley screaming movie might suggest. Glazer would go on to make increasingly ambitious work. Still, his first feature already showed a director uninterested in doing the obvious thing, starting with the wonderfully simple decision to make a gangster movie about a man who wants absolutely nothing to do with being a gangster anymore.<\/p>\n
