RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>DEMON HUNTER: TIME 2 KILL has absolutely no interest in recognizing the limitations of its budget. Zoe Kavanagh throws demons, time travel, corporate Satanists, a 1980s summer-camp slasher, sword fights, practical gore and a motorcycle-riding heroine into the same 97 minutes, then keeps adding ideas long after most independent productions would've started cutting them. That ambition gives the movie an undeniable scrappy charm, but it also creates a constant battle between what Kavanagh imagines and what the production can convincingly put on screen.<\/p>\n

Niamh Hogan stars as Taryn Barker, a wisecracking demon hunter searching for the Necrox, an ancient artifact capable of ending the demonic control threatening Earth. Standing in her way is Elysia Cronika (Lisa Wilcox), the CEO of Illumini Industries and leader of the Stygian Cult, who eventually decides that killing Taryn in the present isn't working and sends her back to 1987 instead.<\/p>\n

When throwing demons at Taryn repeatedly fails, Cronika finds a more creative solution and sends her through time. Taryn winds up in 1987 alongside a group of teenagers, where an already complicated supernatural mission gets tangled with a summer-camp slasher named Lucien Krull. From there, Kavanagh throws demonic mythology, corporate evil, time travel, slasher horror, fantasy action, and comedy together with very little interest in behaving modestly.<\/p>\n

That ambition is probably the easiest thing to admire about DEMON HUNTER: TIME 2 KILL. Plenty of independent productions scale their stories down to match their resources, but Kavanagh takes almost the opposite approach. If the script wants demons, magical artifacts, supernatural battles, time portals, elaborate kills, and a trip into an eighties slasher movie, she goes after it all and deals with the limitations afterward.<\/p>\n

The results are predictably uneven. Some visual effects immediately expose the production's smaller budget, certain scenes suffer from inconsistent lighting and focus, and the overall visual quality can change noticeably from one sequence to the next. Some moments look exactly like the low-budget genre production this is, followed shortly afterward by an action sequence or practical kill that seems to have found resources from somewhere else entirely.<\/p>\n

Kavanagh makes the smartest decision possible by rarely acting embarrassed about it. DEMON HUNTER: TIME 2 KILL understands that personality can cover ground polish can't, and it keeps moving whenever the seams begin showing. The movie doesn't linger on an effect long enough to invite inspection when there's another demon, fight, joke, or bloody death waiting nearby.<\/p>\n

Hogan remains the biggest reason that approach works. Taryn has evolved since the first movie, carrying herself with more confidence while gaining a stronger sense of humor that suits the sequel's expanded tone. Hogan sells the physical side of the character particularly well, and the stunt-heavy action gives her opportunities to make Taryn feel capable rather than relying on editing to do all the work.<\/p>\n

She's also gotten better at the deliberately cheesy dialogue that comes with the territory. Taryn's jokes aren't supposed to sound like someone spent six months polishing each line, and Hogan understands that half the fun comes from delivering something ridiculous with complete confidence before getting back to killing whatever happens to be standing in front of her. That combination gives the character an identity beyond simply being the woman with the sword.<\/p>\n

Kevin O'Malley's return as Ethan Spacey helps connect the sequel with what came before. His chemistry with Taryn remains useful because he can exist beside all of her swagger without trying to compete with it. At the same time, the sequel gives him enough additional responsibility to avoid feeling like a returning character included solely for familiarity. Their relationship gives the movie a little stability whenever the mythology starts expanding in several directions at once.<\/p>\n

Lisa Wilcox brings an obvious bit of horror history with her after A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4 and 5, and Kavanagh knows exactly what having her here adds. Elysia Cronika isn't designed around understatement, and Wilcox plays comfortably within the heightened world around her. An evil corporate executive leading a Satanic cult while manipulating time isn't the role for quiet realism, and the movie is much better off understanding that.<\/p>\n

The shift into 1987 lets Kavanagh indulge in an entirely different set of influences. Camp Beaver becomes the setting for a slasher story that clearly owes plenty to the camp-based horror of the decade, and Lucien Krull provides a threat very different from the monsters Taryn normally faces. The collision works surprisingly well once the movie settles into it because Taryn essentially wanders into somebody else's horror franchise and has to start playing by a slightly different set of rules.<\/p>\n

Getting there isn't always smooth. The time-travel transition and the amount of mythology packed into the first half can make the narrative feel unnecessarily busy, particularly for anyone who hasn't seen the previous movie. DEMON HUNTER: TIME 2 KILL assumes a certain willingness to catch up. At the same time, it runs, and viewers arriving completely cold may spend part of the opening trying to figure out which names, organizations, and supernatural rules they're expected to understand already.<\/p>\n

The 1987 section is also where the movie's humor and practical gore become much more comfortable together. Kavanagh isn't recreating the decade with obsessive historical precision, and anyone looking closely at every costume and production detail will find plenty to question. The interest is much more in capturing the exaggerated personality of eighties genre movies, particularly the willingness to mix outrageous violence with a joke minutes or even seconds later.<\/p>\n

The practical gore deserves credit because it gives DEMON HUNTER: TIME 2 KILL texture that some of the digital effects lack. When bodies are torn apart, blades connect, or blood starts flying, the physical effects have weight. The movie can look rough in other places, but it knows that horror fans will forgive quite a bit when the kills actually deliver.<\/p>\n

The original synth-and-rock soundtrack contributes just as much to the throwback approach. Rather than relying entirely on visual references, Kavanagh uses the music to keep the movie moving with the exaggerated energy it needs. The soundtrack, action, and Taryn's attitude often work well enough together that scenes remain entertaining even when the technical presentation shows its limitations.<\/p>\n

The movie gets into trouble when it refuses to leave anything out. There are enough characters, creatures, mythology, and competing genres that some pieces inevitably receive less attention than they need. A more disciplined screenplay might have trimmed several supporting threads and given the strongest relationships additional room, particularly because the movie already has a perfectly functional engine once Taryn arrives at Camp Beaver.<\/p>\n

At the same time, asking this movie for restraint almost feels like asking it to stop being itself. Kavanagh clearly isn't interested in making a tiny supernatural thriller that fits comfortably within the production's resources. The excess is part of the appeal, and the fact that the movie occasionally reaches beyond what it can convincingly achieve is preferable to watching it spend 97 minutes avoiding anything difficult.<\/p>\n

That willingness to push past its limitations has earned DEMON HUNTER: TIME 2 KILL some recognition on the genre circuit, including a Best Feature Film win at Austria's Fright Nights. It's easy to understand why a festival audience built around horror would respond to it. The movie is messy, energetic, and made with obvious affection for supernatural action, slashers, and the sort of practical bloodshed that doesn't care about remaining tasteful.<\/p>\n

There is also a noticeable leap between this and the earlier TARYN BARKER: DEMON HUNTER. The sequel isn't necessarily cleaner in every respect, but its scope and confidence have expanded considerably. Kavanagh seems much more willing to let Taryn be fun this time around, rather than relying as heavily on darkness to establish that the character belongs in a horror world.<\/p>\n

That evolution is probably the most encouraging part of revisiting her after so many years. DEMON HUNTER: TIME 2 KILL has technical problems that can't simply be excused because it's independent, and its overcrowded story sometimes asks more of the production than it can give. Those shortcomings keep it firmly in the middle of my scale, even when individual sequences punch higher.<\/p>\n

Kavanagh has made the kind of scrappy genre sequel that seems determined to spend every available dollar putting another idea on screen, and Hogan remains an entertaining enough lead to drag the audience through the rougher stretches. DEMON HUNTER: TIME 2 KILL may not successfully execute everything it attempts, but demons, time travel, a Satanic corporation, an eighties summer-camp slasher, practical gore, and a sword-wielding heroine make for a combination that's awfully difficult to accuse of playing things safe.<\/p>\n
