RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>The scariest thing inside New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital isn't necessarily the creature hiding somewhere within its walls. THE TERROR: DEVIL IN SILVER repeatedly makes paperwork, medication schedules, locked doors, indifferent employees, and the simple inability to convince anyone that you're telling the truth feel just as threatening. That's where this third installment of THE TERROR is at its strongest, and also why its more traditional supernatural horror occasionally feels like it's interrupting the better story.<\/p>\n

\n

Dan Stevens plays Pepper, a working-class, moving man whose temper and an ugly confrontation land him inside New Hyde under circumstances that are questionable almost immediately. What is supposed to be a short psychiatric hold becomes increasingly difficult to escape as Pepper discovers how little control he has once the institution decides who he is. He can argue, demand explanations, or insist that he doesn't belong there, but every angry response can become another piece of evidence supporting the very thing he's trying to disprove.<\/p>\n

That's an uncomfortable trap, and the series understands it immediately. Pepper isn't written as some perfectly calm innocent who simply wandered into the wrong building. He's stubborn, confrontational, and capable of making his own situation worse, which gives Stevens considerably more to play with than straightforward victimhood.<\/p>\n

Stevens is excellent at making Pepper abrasive without turning him into someone impossible to care about. There's a constant sense that he's trying to stay one step ahead of a system that already has the advantage, and his frustration becomes understandable even when his choices aren't particularly smart. He can be funny, angry, frightened, selfish, and unexpectedly tender without any of those qualities feeling disconnected from the man we've been following.<\/p>\n

The rest of New Hyde gradually becomes much more important than whatever might be roaming its halls. Judith Light is especially good as Dorry, a longtime patient who understands how the institution operates in ways Pepper doesn't. Light finds humor and sadness in the character without making either feel forced, and several of the series' best moments come from simply letting Dorry interact with the people around her.<\/p>\n

Chinaza Uche as Coffee and b as Loochie help give the patient community an identity beyond a collection of psychiatric diagnoses. Hampton Fluker's Scotch Tape also becomes part of a group that slowly feels less like supporting characters surrounding Pepper and more like people whose lives continue whether he's paying attention to them or not. That distinction matters in a story interested in how easily institutions can reduce people to charts, conditions, medications, and bed numbers.<\/p>\n

CCH Pounder brings the authority you'd expect. At the same time, Aasif Mandvi's Dr. Anand exists in a more complicated space between treating people and participating in a structure that often seems designed to keep everything manageable rather than make anyone better. Stephen Root is another welcome presence, even when the series doesn't give every recognizable member of this unusually deep cast the same amount of material.<\/p>\n

Then there's John Benjamin Hickey as Dr. Walter, and that's where THE TERROR: DEVIL IN SILVER starts pulling its institutional and supernatural threads together. Hickey has an unsettling calmness that works far better than if the character had been played as obviously sinister from the beginning. New Hyde already feels wrong before the series begins, confirming that something beyond neglect and bureaucracy may be hiding there.<\/p>\n

The hospital itself does much of the heavy lifting. Narrow corridors, worn rooms, restricted areas, old equipment, and doors that seem to conceal things nobody wants to discuss create an atmosphere where Pepper's confusion becomes our confusion. The series doesn't need to throw something frightening into every hallway because the building already feels hostile.<\/p>\n

That's why I was somewhat disappointed whenever DEVIL IN SILVER leaned harder into the literal monster. There are effective scares and some disturbing imagery. Still, the supernatural threat never becomes as frightening as the possibility of being trapped inside New Hyde with no meaningful way to prove you should be allowed to leave. One horror is extraordinary. The other feels disturbingly possible.<\/p>\n

Victor LaValle, adapting his own novel alongside showrunner Chris Cantwell, uses that contrast to examine who gets believed, who gets dismissed, and what happens when care becomes another system built around efficiency and control. The commentary isn't particularly subtle, but it usually doesn't need to be. Watching someone's identity slowly become whatever a file says about them is upsetting, and it doesn't need much explanation.<\/p>\n

The series struggles to balance that material with everything else it wants to accomplish in only six episodes. DEVIL IN SILVER introduces several patients, doctors, histories, personal traumas, institutional failures, mysteries, and supernatural questions, and some inevitably receive less attention than they deserve. Six episodes keep the story from becoming bloated. Still, they create the strange feeling that certain relationships only begin to get interesting when the season needs to move toward its conclusion.<\/p>\n

The supernatural mythology contributes to that problem. The series spends considerable time asking what exactly is lurking inside New Hyde, yet the answers aren't always as compelling as the questions. The closer we get to understanding the threat, the more conventional the horror becomes.<\/p>\n

That's especially noticeable because the human material remains strong. An orderly ignoring someone, a doctor deciding without listening, or a patient realizing nobody outside the building is coming to help can create more tension than a carefully staged jump scare. Karyn Kusama's opening episodes establish that oppressive feeling particularly well, setting up a place where something being officially documented doesn't necessarily make it true.<\/p>\n

The middle episodes are also where the supporting cast begins giving the series some much-needed warmth. THE TERROR: DEVIL IN SILVER isn't relentlessly miserable, and that's important. Moments of humor, friendship, irritation, and genuine affection emerge among patients who have otherwise been treated as problems to contain.<\/p>\n

Those relationships help prevent the show's criticism of psychiatric care from flattening the patients themselves. They aren't presented as a single suffering mass, and their conditions don't automatically define every conversation. The people inside New Hyde can be difficult, funny, generous, annoying, frightened, insightful, and contradictory just like anyone outside it.<\/p>\n

The six-hour runtime ultimately feels both appropriate and slightly frustrating. There's enough material to justify the limited-series format. Still, the final portion has to resolve a lot at once, and some of the careful uncertainty built earlier gives way to more direct explanation and confrontation. The series doesn't collapse, but it becomes less interesting once it starts answering questions that were stronger while left hanging.<\/p>\n

As the third story under THE TERROR name, DEVIL IN SILVER also takes the anthology somewhere significantly different from the historical settings of the previous installments. The connection isn't a continuing story but the idea of people trapped somewhere hostile while something they don't fully understand closes in around them. New Hyde fits that concept surprisingly well, even without frozen ships or wartime confinement.<\/p>\n

The physical release includes all six episodes plus an inside-look featurette, but the real attraction remains Stevens and an ensemble stronger than the horror surrounding them. The cast repeatedly finds humanity in a story that could easily have become nothing but suffering, medication, screaming, and monsters.<\/p>\n

THE TERROR: DEVIL IN SILVER has plenty to say about demons, but the more unsettling question is how much damage can happen without one. The supernatural material gives the series its horror hook, while New Hyde's everyday cruelty gives it weight. I just wish the series trusted that second part a little more, because whenever the Devil steps aside and the hospital is allowed to be frightening on its own, this becomes a much better show.<\/p>\n
