RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Before anyone says much of anything, COME THE NIGHTFALL has already made one of its strongest decisions. Tom Michaels shot his 23-minute horror short on 16mm, and that choice immediately gives the film a texture that would be difficult to reproduce digitally. The grain, heavier shadows, and slightly worn image quality aren't simply there to announce that Michaels likes older horror movies. They help establish the uneasiness of a story where almost everyone seems a little different from the person they're presenting to the world.<\/p>\n

Michaels clearly has affection for horror and thrillers from the late 1970s and early 1980s, but COME THE NIGHTFALL generally avoids becoming an exercise in imitation. Traces of John Carpenter, Alfred Hitchcock, and the psychological thrillers that loved putting seemingly ordinary people in uncomfortable rooms together appear throughout. Samuel Joseph Smythe's synthesizer-heavy music pushes the film even further into that period. At the same time, cinematographer Ben Steeper leaves enough darkness in the nighttime photography to feel dangerous without burying everything inside it.<\/p>\n

The actual story is almost aggressively simple at first. Bill (Michaels) encounters Joanna (Jade Warwick) stranded along a deserted road and offers her a ride, eventually inviting her back to his home for dinner. She's attractive, mysterious, and understandably cautious. At the same time, Bill seems helpful enough to make accepting the invitation plausible while still giving off just enough discomfort to make you question whether she should.<\/p>\n

That uncertainty becomes more important than the plot itself. COME THE NIGHTFALL knows that anyone familiar with this type of horror story is immediately going to start guessing who should be afraid of whom, so Michaels plays around with those assumptions instead of rushing toward an answer. Bill might be a harmless man whose interest in Joanna is getting a little too obvious. Joanna might be exactly the vulnerable stranger she appears to be. Neither possibility ever feels entirely secure.<\/p>\n

Michaels also makes the interesting choice of directing himself in the role that requires the least certainty. Bill isn't frightening because he's introduced as some obvious monster. He's uncomfortable because his friendliness always seems capable of shifting a few degrees in the wrong direction. Michaels occasionally pushes the character's mannerisms hard enough that the mystery around him becomes easier to read. Still, something is entertaining about watching Bill try to control an evening that never feels fully under his control.<\/p>\n

Warwick has the harder performance because Joanna needs to stay guarded without becoming emotionally blank. She handles that balance well, particularly once the film moves away from the road and puts the two characters in a confined space together. Her expressions reveal just enough awareness to suggest Joanna is processing more than she's saying, and the femme fatale qualities around the character gradually grow more important without reducing her to a familiar horror archetype.<\/p>\n

Their scenes together are where COME THE NIGHTFALL is at its best. The film doesn't try to generate fear through constant movement or surprise attacks; so much of its tension comes from watching two people talk while neither seems entirely honest about what they want. A dinner table becomes more threatening than the deserted road because escape is no longer the only concern. The question becomes whether either character understands the situation as well as they believe they do.<\/p>\n

That slower approach does create one of the short's weaknesses. Twenty-three minutes isn't long, yet the opening occasionally takes longer to establish its mood than the story needs. Michaels wants us to sit with the characters and absorb the atmosphere, which works visually, but at times trimming even a little could've tightened the tension sooner. The film becomes considerably stronger once Bill and Joanna are together long enough for their behavior to start challenging those first impressions.<\/p>\n

There's also a degree of familiarity that COME THE NIGHTFALL can't completely escape. The lonely road, mysterious woman, suspicious man, isolated home, and growing uncertainty over predator and victim all belong to a long tradition of horror storytelling. Michaels isn't reinventing those pieces, and anyone who watches a lot of genre films will probably recognize several of the directions he appears capable of taking.<\/p>\n

What saves the film from simply repeating them is Michaels' willingness to play with where the audience's sympathy and suspicion are sitting. COME THE NIGHTFALL doesn't need every turn to be impossible to predict. It's more interested in letting us get comfortable with one interpretation before gradually making it less reliable. The later shift in the characters' dynamic works because the film has spent enough time allowing both of them to remain slightly unreadable.<\/p>\n

Production design also quietly contributes to that uncertainty. Chris Kooreman's interiors contain enough odd details and remnants of lives outside the immediate conversation that the house never feels neutral. There are things in the background worth noticing, yet Michaels doesn't constantly call attention to them. It's the kind of environment that encourages you to scan the room while the characters are talking, which is exactly what a short built around suspicion needs. The practical approach gives the entire production a handmade quality that works in its favor. COME THE NIGHTFALL never feels as though it’s trying to disguise its independent scale; Michaels instead puts the available resources toward creating a specific look, and that confidence makes the film feel more polished than its modest scope might suggest.<\/p>\n

The sound and music matter just as much. Smythe's score doesn't merely recreate an older horror sound because synthesizers happen to fit the period Michaels is referencing. It provides momentum during stretches when the characters aren't moving much, helping the film maintain pressure without forcing an event into every quiet moment. The combination of actual film stock, the score, and Ned Thorne's editing gives COME THE NIGHTFALL a specific personality that feels unusually considered for a 23-minute production.<\/p>\n

I can also understand why Michaels is now looking at COME THE NIGHTFALL as something that could become a feature. The short reaches an ending rather than functioning like an unfinished proof of concept. Still, it leaves enough surrounding its characters and circumstances unexplored that another hour wouldn't automatically feel unnecessary. A feature could spend more time with the larger community, the crimes hanging over it, and the psychology that the short can only suggest. The challenge will be preserving the tight uncertainty that makes this version effective rather than simply explaining everything the short wisely leaves alone.<\/p>\n

COME THE NIGHTFALL is ultimately stronger as an exercise in mood, character, and misdirection than as an entirely original piece of horror storytelling. Its influences aren't difficult to spot, and the first section could move with a little more urgency, but Michaels knows the kind of movie he wants to make and commits to that approach all the way down to the film stock. At 23 minutes, it gives us enough time to become suspicious of everyone without overstaying the evening. What makes the planned feature interesting is that COME THE NIGHTFALL doesn't leave me wondering how anyone could stretch this material longer. It leaves me wondering what else Michaels has been holding back.<\/p>\n
