RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>1978 puts celebration and cruelty in the same room. While Argentina is consumed by the 1978 World Cup final, a group of men connected to the country’s military dictatorship goes about the far uglier business of kidnapping and interrogating a group of young people, creating a contrast that gives the movie some of its most disturbing moments.<\/p>\n

Directors Luciano and Nicolás Onetti don’t need to force much horror into those early scenes because their setting already provides it. The casual behavior of the captors is often more upsetting than the violence itself, especially when the excitement surrounding the soccer match continues in the background while terrible things are happening only a short distance away. That disconnect gives the opening half a coldness that’s difficult to shake.<\/p>\n

There’s something effective about how ordinary the perpetrators can appear between acts of brutality. They talk, watch television, move in and out of rooms, and carry themselves as though what they’re doing is simply another part of the job. Combined with the confined corridors, interrogation rooms, and badly lit corners, that matter-of-fact cruelty makes the building feel like a trap long before anything supernatural fully announces itself.<\/p>\n

That’s also where 1978 creates a problem for itself. Once the movie begins pushing away from human cruelty and toward supernatural horror, it has to come up with something that can compete with what it has already shown us, and I’m not convinced it ever does. The earlier material feels specific, ugly, and tied to a real historical nightmare; the later material is much broader and more recognizable as genre horror.<\/p>\n

The Onetti brothers clearly aren’t interested in making a straightforward historical drama with horror elements around the edges. There’s an increasingly strange quality hanging over the prisoners and the building, and the film eventually lets that side take control. The practical effects, makeup, and grotesque imagery give the latter portion a much different energy, and visually, there’s plenty here for horror fans who want the movie to stop holding back.<\/p>\n

My issue isn’t that 1978 changes. The problem is that the change weakens the material that had already pulled me in. Instead of the supernatural layer deepening the terror of the dictatorship setting, it often feels as though one movie is gradually replacing another, and the grounded half was the one I found more disturbing.<\/p>\n

That distinction matters because the historical setting isn’t merely decoration. The movie spends enough time establishing the cruelty of these captors that my attention became locked onto them, the prisoners, and the imbalance of power inside those rooms. Watching men who believe they have complete authority over other human beings is already frightening, particularly when they can move between torture and ordinary conversation without hesitation.<\/p>\n

There is an obvious appeal in watching those same men suddenly realize they’re not the most dangerous thing in the room. 1978 understands the satisfaction built into that reversal, and some later scenes benefit from it as the balance of power shifts and the captors lose control. I just wanted more from that idea than the immediate thrill of seeing the tables turn.<\/p>\n

There’s room here for the supernatural elements to echo the violence already being committed or expose something sharper about the men responsible. Still, the movie is often more interested in escalation than connection. The images get bigger and stranger, yet the relationship between the historical horror and the occult horror never becomes as strong as the setup suggests it could be. Rather than making the first half feel even uglier in retrospect, the second half gradually pulls attention away from it.<\/p>\n

Another thing that keeps the two halves from fully connecting is how differently they create fear. The opening relies on anticipation, confinement, and the knowledge that these men can do essentially whatever they want to the people they’ve captured. There’s a constant sense that something terrible could happen without warning, and the movie is at its best when it allows that possibility to hang over a scene instead of immediately paying it off.<\/p>\n

Once the supernatural side takes over, that restraint largely disappears. The movie becomes louder, bloodier, and much more interested in showing us exactly what has entered the building. There’s certainly an audience for that escalation, and the effects team gives the Onettis plenty of memorable material to work with, but I missed the earlier uncertainty. The first half made me uncomfortable because I didn’t know what these men were capable of doing next; the second half often tells us exactly what kind of horror we’re watching.<\/p>\n

The roughly 80-minute runtime makes this more noticeable. There isn’t much space to build the prisoners as individuals before the movie changes direction, leaving several of them defined primarily by what happens to them rather than who they are. A little more time with them could’ve given the later developments stronger emotional weight and made the shift feel less like the movie was rushing toward its next stage.<\/p>\n

Agustín Olcese and the larger cast still do enough to keep the human side from completely disappearing. Fear, confusion, and the growing realization that something is wrong come through without the performances becoming overly theatrical. At the same time, Mario Alarcón, Carlos Portaluppi, and the actors playing the captors maintain the nasty arrogance the story needs to function. It’s an ensemble built around pressure rather than one obvious standout, and that approach fits the confined setting.<\/p>\n

The sound design deserves credit as well because the World Cup broadcast isn’t simply background noise. Cheers, voices, and the excitement surrounding the match create an awful contrast with what’s happening inside the building, making the celebration feel almost cruel in context. The outside world is having one of those national moments people remember forever while these characters are trapped in a place where that joy means absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n

The result is strangely less interesting as it gets stranger. Early on, I wasn’t sure how far the Onetti brothers were willing to push the material, and that uncertainty created tension. Later, when the movie starts supplying increasingly direct answers through effects and supernatural imagery, much of that uneasiness gives way to a more familiar kind of horror.<\/p>\n

That doesn’t make 1978 a failure, and there’s ambition here that I’d rather see than something completely safe. The Onetti brothers take a genuine swing by placing an occult nightmare inside a horrifying historical setting, and the movie has enough visual confidence and practical work to explain why its more extreme moments have appeal. The ideas just never fuse as completely as they need to.<\/p>\n

For me, the strongest version of 1978 is the one it gradually leaves behind. The horrifying contradiction of people celebrating a national victory while violence continues behind closed doors already gives the film everything it needs, and nothing introduced afterward hit me with the same force. The supernatural turn adds spectacle and a few memorable images, but the human horror had already done considerably more damage.<\/p>\n
