RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>The best idea in NO ONE WILL HEAR YOUR SCREAM arrives almost immediately. The 1990 World Cup consumes Argentina, entire neighborhoods empty as everyone gathers around televisions, and a killer realizes that there may never be a better time to murder someone. Every cheer from another room becomes cover, every match creates a window where witnesses disappear, and every game on the schedule can potentially mean another victim. It’s such a clean slasher setup that the movie barely needs to explain why it works.<\/p>\n

\n

Mariano Cattaneo gets plenty of mileage out of that premise, especially during the opening stretch. Stores close early, streets become unusually quiet, and televisions dominate practically every gathering as Argentina’s national team becomes the center of attention. The excitement around the tournament creates a believable reason for the outside world to temporarily disappear, allowing the killer to operate in circumstances where screaming for help might accomplish absolutely nothing. That connection between celebration and violence gives the movie an identity that separates it from the countless masked-killer stories built around teenagers wandering somewhere they obviously shouldn’t.<\/p>\n

Micaela Silva (Sol Wainer) works in her family’s record store, making personalized mixtapes while the rest of the country follows the tournament. Her connection to the murders develops after she discovers that a song heard in the background of a threatening recording came from one of her compilations. Suddenly, the mystery isn’t happening somewhere outside her life. Someone who walked through the store and received something she personally created may be responsible, giving her a reason to start looking at customers and people around her differently.<\/p>\n

The record-store setting may actually be more memorable than the World Cup material. Cassettes, vinyl, mixtapes, posters, electronics, and rock music give NO ONE WILL HEAR YOUR SCREAM a strong sense of time without constantly stopping to remind viewers that it’s 1990. Cattaneo clearly has affection for the period, and the production is at its best when that nostalgia feels tied to Micaela rather than simply placed around her. Music isn’t just decoration here. It becomes evidence, personality, and eventually part of the connection between Micaela and the killer.<\/p>\n

Wainer is also one of the film’s strongest assets. Micaela feels like an actual person instead of someone introduced purely because the screenplay requires a final girl, which makes her gradual move into amateur investigation easier to accept. She’s curious, frightened, and occasionally reckless, but she doesn’t become some suddenly unstoppable horror heroine once the danger moves closer. Wainer keeps her grounded even when the mystery begins asking her to make decisions no reasonable person should probably make alone.<\/p>\n

The supporting characters help with that sense of normalcy. Tomás (Byron Barbieri), Carlos (Román Almaraz), and the people moving through Micaela’s everyday life aren’t presented as an endless parade of obnoxious slasher victims waiting for their number to come up. That gives the deaths a little more impact than they might otherwise have. However, several characters still aren’t given enough time to become especially memorable before the movie needs to move on.<\/p>\n

For a slasher, the actual murders are a mixed collection. The killer is aggressive, some attacks are appropriately nasty, and the special makeup effects occasionally deliver the practical messiness the genre needs. A particularly memorable skateboard scene shows how creative the movie can become when it fully commits to a kill. Other deaths are considerably more straightforward, though, and the reliance on similar bursts of violence makes the body count feel less varied than the setup deserves.<\/p>\n

That becomes part of the movie’s larger problem. NO ONE WILL HEAR YOUR SCREAM has a stronger concept than its execution. Every Argentina match should feel like another ticking clock, with the killer’s schedule becoming increasingly predictable even if the identity remains unknown. Cattaneo uses that idea, but not aggressively enough. The World Cup gradually becomes more background than engine, when it could control the film's entire rhythm.<\/p>\n

There’s an especially interesting opportunity in the noise itself. A stadium crowd roaring through television speakers while someone is being attacked nearby should create some genuinely uncomfortable suspense, because the same sound celebrating a goal can completely bury a cry for help. The movie occasionally reaches for that contrast, but the stalking scenes rarely build enough tension before the violence arrives. Too often, the kill becomes the event instead of the frightening anticipation that should lead into it.<\/p>\n

At only 80 minutes, the movie somehow still feels slow in places. That isn’t because the story needs more murders every few minutes; it’s because the mystery sometimes pauses rather than deepens. Micaela identifies clues and starts connecting pieces, but the stretches between those discoveries don’t generate the same energy as the horror. A film this short should probably feel almost relentless once its pattern becomes clear.<\/p>\n

The killer’s appearance helps compensate for some of that. The mask has enough personality to avoid feeling interchangeable with dozens of other modern slashers, while the physical performance stays appropriately rough during the attacks. Cattaneo doesn’t overcomplicate the figure with endless mythology either. For most of the movie, the important question remains exactly what a slasher mystery needs: who is behind the mask, and why are these particular people being targeted?<\/p>\n

A noticeable giallo influence also runs alongside the more obvious American slasher references. The investigation, musical emphasis, stylized lighting, suspicious characters, and uncertainty surrounding the murderer matter almost as much as the body count. NO ONE WILL HEAR YOUR SCREAM doesn’t become a full giallo, but those influences keep it from feeling like a simple attempt to recreate FRIDAY THE 13TH or SCREAM with an Argentine setting.<\/p>\n

The retro presentation mostly works because the movie doesn’t polish everything to the point of feeling artificial. The cinematography and production have a slightly rough quality that fits the material surprisingly well. This looks closer to something that might have sat on a video-store shelf than a modern movie trying desperately to prove how accurately it recreated 1990. The production's limitations are visible, but they occasionally become part of the charm rather than something the film needs to hide.<\/p>\n

Those limitations are harder to overlook in some of the performances and dialogue surrounding Wainer. A few exchanges feel stiff, and certain emotional reactions don’t land with the weight the situation needs. The English-language streaming presentation can apparently make that problem worse, as the currently circulating dub has drawn criticism compared with the original Spanish-language performances. The movie was produced in Spanish, and that’s clearly the version worth seeking out whenever possible.<\/p>\n

The final stretch regains some momentum as the mystery starts to pay off. Cattaneo has enough tricks left to prevent the identity question from becoming completely obvious, and the ending introduces additional uncertainty rather than wrapping everything into an overly neat explanation. I can understand anyone finding that conclusion frustrating, because it leaves the story feeling slightly unfinished. Still, I’d rather a slasher make me question what just happened than deliver a reveal I figured out forty minutes earlier.<\/p>\n

Still, the movie ends just as it feels like another layer could have pushed everything further. The World Cup concept, the mixtape connection, the giallo influence, and the masked killer are all strong ingredients, but they don’t always feel fully combined into the same story. At times, the movie seems one escalation away from becoming significantly better, only to settle for something more familiar.<\/p>\n

That’s why NO ONE WILL HEAR YOUR SCREAM lands comfortably around three stars for me. There’s enough personality, period detail, music, and slasher enthusiasm to make it an easy watch, especially for anyone who enjoys low-budget international horror. Sol Wainer gives the movie someone worth following, the killer gets a few memorable moments, and the World Cup backdrop is an excellent foundation.<\/p>\n

I only wish Cattaneo had pushed that foundation harder. A country becoming completely distracted at the same scheduled time creates an almost perfect murder calendar, and NO ONE WILL HEAR YOUR SCREAM understands how clever that idea is without quite exploiting everything it offers. The crowd keeps cheering, the killer keeps moving, and the film remains entertaining enough between them, even if the loudest idea here deserved an even stronger scream.<\/p>\n
